I guess I can get that Lester can't throw to first for a pickoff throw, but I feel like it should be a much bigger story that the guy literally can't field a grounder or a bunt either. I mean, how do they not talk about it constantly while he pitches? Why don't opponents bunt it at him more often? So many questions.
He can underhand it to first or he bounces them sometimes on bunt attempts. His fielders also cover for him.
Base runner are only stealing at a 68% rate on Lester/Ross. Lester is pretty quick to home and Ross has a fast release so stealing is not a sure thing.
The issue turns out to be not a big deal really.

So he can't do basic fielding plays and can't/chooses not to do anything to hold the run game? Huh. Those seem like issues that will become a major problem when the pitching ability slips a notch.

Only because he struck out Kipnis. Imagine if Kipnis went deep there

Lester may field like shit, but still pitches like Lester of old.

Something tells me he'll get a little more diligent about it and those around him a bit less tolerant of the apparent "that's just how it is" thing if the pitching ability slips.

Yup, if Maddon didn't use Chapman last night (which he shouldn't have), then I could see putting him out there to start the 8th. But now, you have to let Lester start the inning, and try to buy Chapman at least another out or two.
