Sort of case by case. They certainly played hardball with Ty Law and Logan Mankins.
Yes, it depends on the circumstances. But we're talking 9 and 6 years ago with these two cases.

Shop around and bring us your best offer is smart business. Because if somebody really does not want to be with you, for whatever reason, it's probably wise to part. Unless you desperately need him, and even then he has to be someone who is going to be professional in his approach, even if he's really pissed off.

I don't know that they care to endure the drama anymore in Fox, and if not, I cannot blame them.

Very decent chance there will be lots of agina here while next year's sausage is made. There may even be a call to change a popular thread to the past tense.

It's likely to be a wild ride. There certainly is a plan, and one can only trust in it and wait until it's complete.

Thank you for preemptively lecturing everyone. "Agina" indeed.

Could there be any strategy in play from the Patriots to let a large portion of our free agents walk this year, without signing any large free agents ourselves (extending Butler would not count) as this would allow us to (1) carry a huge salary cap balance into next year and to (2) receive a significant amount of compensatory draft picks next year?

I almost feel like a team could do well to implement an every-other-year strategy for salary cap management/free agent signings/compensatory draft picks.

The thing is, it is worth underscoring that some moves will elicit loud WTFs in isolation. If, for example, Hightower doesn't return, that will be a result that I will have a lot of trouble making sense of...in isolation and without seeing how the whole roster shakes out. And I'm fully cognizant of the reasons why we should all trust Bill.

Said differently, I appreciate the preemptive reminder.

To me it simply doesn't matter any more. #5 cemented it. BB can do anything and I won't question it.

Needs to do a better job of taking charges on LeBron while seated courtside. Coaching could be better, execution could be better, just needs to do a better job.

I can't wait until his press conference before week 1 next year if they are playing the Falcons, and he spends the entire thing talking about how they need to be more competitive on both sides of the ball.

Reporter: But coach, you just beat these same guys last year in one of the most memorable Super Bowl games ever.
BB: *Death Stare*
Reporter: .... I Mean....
BB: *Long pause* We're just worried about getting ready for next week.

So, you think the Patriots could do better than winning their division, winning the Superbowl, AND having the 4th best cap situation and a $5 million carryover? It seems like they have a good handle on things. :)

Certainly not a lecture, and talking to myself as much as anyone.

Creative destruction comes every offseason to some degree, but I've never gotten entirely used to the dismantling part.

no, there will be lots of Pizzeria Regina here while next year's team is built. I mean, we may be basement-dwellers, but we're still not going to just order Dominos or something.

DDB you're right on Philly's Trey Burton, he's an RFA so probably unlikely to come here but he's 25 with a ton of potential. But his name is a natural fit for Gillette.

That's said, the thing I like about Bennett leaving is it's more likely Gronk doesn't leave in the future.

So I'd selfishly like to see someone who is good, a 1B type, but wouldn't challenge to supplant Gronk, maybe a Jack Doyle from Indy or a Ryan Griffin from Houston. Rivera would work too.

No thanks on Davis he's a bit too old at 33 imho

And there are always old friends Tim Wright and Zach Sudfeld who should know much of the playbook but would cost peanuts I think.

u dont want davis guy lucked into a SB with drop everything a catch at home aga OAK that he makes denver ties the game and wins in ot and a very easy catch in pittbugh that any TE should make guy was our 3 TE in playoffs in 15

I talked to my friend last week who knows Latavius Murray. As is reported now by other outlets, the Raiders aren't in on him. He mentioned the Giants, Eagles, and Lions as teams Murray said are most likely for him. But he also said that his number one choice is to play for the Patriots and Tom Brady. At the time, Murray indicated to my friend that the money has to be comparable to what others are offering but that if the Pats come close he'd come.
murray gets nicked up a lot is a 1'100 yard back but to me is C J Anderson 2.0 with blount white and lewis that is as good as anyone in the nfl

Here
beware on Poe he has a bad back and only shows up when he wants to Sly Williams denver is worth a look as a num 2 or 3 DT not a star but a pefect role player
Yeah, Poe scares me with his bad back and size. If they miss out on Branch (sounds promising, and I like the 5 mil offer), Fairley is a guy I'd look in to. The Younguns at the position are real strong, too, so Branch signing should cover the position for this year.

Which one?

I'd take the Denver one, for the right price
The WR that was just cut, is 33, and seems to want to play for a contender during his last few years in the league. Given the rumors that BB tried to trade Jamie Collins for Hopkins or Cooks should lead us to believe he wants to add talent at WR, which we know Marshall still has. Seems to have a differentiated skill set than what our WR group currently possesses. That said, I suppose it depends which direction they go at TE as well.

Can't imagine Bill is interested in Marshall chairing 'Inside the NFL' every week in his spare time, or adding another plus-30 wide receiver. They need youth at the position.

u dont want marshall he loves inside the nfl way too much plus he has been bad since 2013
He was terrific in 2015 with 1500 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns. Not likely a candidate for the Pats, but even at 33, he would be a good receiver with Brady.

If Inside the NFL didn't interfere with practice then I doubt BB would have an issue.

But, I'd rather see if Floyd would come back.

Is Calais Campbell not the perfect fit for NE? Can lineup anywhere on the DL. Strong at point of attack and probably not going to be grossly overpaid cuz only 8 sacks last year. He is pretty much Richard Seymour.

At 6'8 300 lbs he is unlikely to become a liability for at least a few years. He can lose some strength and speed and still take up space. NE seems to make a big D FA splash every few years, Colvin, Adalius Thomas, Revis, etc. I'm hoping this is the year they make another splash on CC.

Other then Wilfork, this team tends to find vets on the defensive line that can get the job done for cheap. From Ted Washington to Alan Branch, they don't tend to sink money on the interior defensive line.

FWIW, I think it's the right play. There's enough skill at the position that overpaying for anyone not in the JJ Watt category doesn't seem like a good use of resources.

This isn't necessarily free agency, but an interesting rumor from New Orleans to say the least and it involves the Patriots trying to acquire Brandin Cooks. It says their offer was rebuffed, but still surprising that the Patriots would be offering a 1st round pick for a WR.

NDIANAPOLIS -- New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and coach Sean Payton have acknowledged that the team would need a significant return in order to trade wide receiver Brandin Cooks, and it seems they've set their sights on a desired price.

If the Saints choose to move Cooks, they're hoping to receive a draft pick in the middle of the first round, according to two sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

To this point, at least five teams have made overtures to the Saints about the productive young receiver. In addition to the Tennessee Titans and Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots are among the teams that have inquired about a potential Cooks deal.

The Patriots offered the No. 32 overall pick as part of their package, but that wasn't enough for the 23-year-old Cooks, per both sources. Other teams involved have tried to acquire Cooks for a second-round pick.

Kinda shocked they would offer a 1st rounder on a position that is pretty stacked. They have needs on DL, LB, OL, TE, etc. Even with Dola possibly gone and Jules possibly in decline that first should be spent elsewhere. But hey, why question shit at this point.

I'm enough of a tinfoil hat to suspect that this might be Belichick doing Payton a solid -- allow No. 32 to be seen as not enough to set a benchmark.
The slot receiver is probably the most important position on the Pats offense aside QB. It's been manned by Brown, Welker, and now Edelman. Edelman is now 1 year shy of where Welker was when they showed him the door. Finding his replacement is vital for the future of this team. If they think Cooks is the guy, I'm fine with them throwing a valuable asset to try and get himm
