Ball has the most elite couple of tools in this year's draft, with his vision and passing ability. But his jumper (in terms of motion and while moving--he's solid spot-up), defense, and lack of any other offensive game are all issues.

Jason Kidd with a little less physicality is the commonly-stated upside, but Ball isn't in his world defensively (yet, at least). Kidd is so unique I really hesitate to use him as a comp for anyone.

I think Ricky Rubio with weaker on-ball defense and a little better spot-up jumper is realistic. And that's a useful player. And the upside beyond that is sort of Magic-lite...which obviously is a huge impact guy. There just aren't many guys with his kind of vision and passing skils.
Are you saying Rubio is a long-term comp, or a comp for the next year or two?

Because the latter would be impressive. Look at last year's draft: the only top-10 pick who was within shouting distance of league average was Buddy Hield (after he was traded to Sacramento, at least), and he's 23 years old. Even highly-touted 20-21 year olds are seldom more than marginal NBA players who show flashes of potential.

Assuming Fultz's injury is not serious, the crowds the Lakers are drawing in Las Vegas are the biggest story of the Summer League season, and Ball is the reason for that. Of course the announcers are focusing on him.

Ball will get more than his share of attention because he's the #2 overall pick and playing for the Lakers, but if the Lakers are 8-16 in mid-December again, the media spotlight will fade and opposing players will treat him as JAG.
You really think the media spotlight will fade? I think LaVar knows what he's doing and is always going to keep Lonzo front and center, even if the Lakers suck. And being crappy certainly didn't matter with respect to ESPN's Tebow coverage.

If you're definition of "spectacularly wrong" is that he will be heads and shoulders better than Fultz or Tatum, I don't think most of us are too worried at this point.

....
Holy shifting goal posts! Way to set the bar as head and shoulders above the #1 pick in the draft in order for Ball to be a success. I can't speak for Gunfighter, but I assume he was referring to the rampant speculation about how far Ball would drop in the draft, his supposed lack of handle, some guy talking about how on "his board" he had Semi ahead of Ball (granted that one was well beyond the norm, even for this Ball-obsessed Ball-bashing board), etc.

Hi that was me.

I'm allowed to have a board. I'm allowed to hate Kelly Olynyk and Lonzo Ball equally.

I think he's a long-term comp. I think year one Ball is going to have a ton of highlights and a lot of mistakes while struggling offensively and being a sieve defensively.

Box score has "Tatum dnp right patellar tendonitis." First I've heard that. Just too many games?

:)

indeed!

I think he's an impressive passer with great vision and he will hit open shots. That's worth a lot and why he went number 2 in a good draft. However, I'm not convinced he will be the best rookie point guard in Los Angeles.
You think Hart will be better than Ball? okay.

Ball apparently wearing Adidas tonight.

He was just praised for passing the ball from his own foul line, 10 feet up the court, to a guy still on his side of half court.

Its going to be a long season if you are going to react to each and every case of Ball-washing. The WWL is in "Full Ball Stan Mode" right now.

I don't want to live in a country where I can't complain about ESPN.

I do like Ball though. I'd just like him more on team such as not-Lakers.

Dennis Smith Jr. looks even more explosive than he did a couple of months ago. He's getting anywhere he wants on the court.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly on both points. I just choose to ignore the Ball Stroking for sanity's sake.

Who needs Lonzo Ball when you have Jabari Bird and Rosco Allen?
DSJ and Yogi next up for the Summer C's.

Watching Ball throw up brick after brick from the 3 pt line is painful - just stick to driving and passing for now - yikes

Away from Ball, Kuzma has impressed me a ton. With the typical Summer League caveat, the kid can stroke from the NBA three point line and unlike Ball, he will generally get some very favorable looks off of screens. He and Ball seem to have a great chemistry to start as well. If Kuzma can defend, he is going to be very useful in the Association.

Yeah, figured. It did cause me too look up the rookie of the year odds. Teodosic not even on the books.
Do they have an age limit or certain restrictions on ROY like the NHL does? I'm pretty sure MLB did something to prevent Japanese players from winning ROY too but I'm not sure.

Sabonis finished second in ROY voting at age 31. Granted, that was two decades ago so something may have changed.

Why did Smith's stock fall? Iirc, mocks in February and March had him going 4th or 5th. I understand why the Kings opted for De'Aaron Fox at #5 (though they may end up regretting that), and I guess I can see why the Magic opted for Isaac's length at #6 (though I think that was a mistake), but I have no idea how Smith slid past #7. He's such a phenomenal raw talent, and the two guys who went immediately ahead of him look like relatively low-upside rotational players.

Pick 7--Minnesota traded it along with a PG for Jimmy Butler. Bulls were getting Dunn, didn't want another young PG. T'Wolves may have insisted Dunn be in deal.

Pick 8-Knicks. HAHAHAHAHA

Well at one point NC State was 14-7 and playing ok. They then lost 10 of their last 11 games and he didn't play so well during that time. Only 32.7% from 3, 15.5 PPG, 4.0 turnovers per game against 5.5 assists. Compare that to his first 21 games: 37.6% from 3, 19.5 PPG, 3.0 turnovers against 6.5 assists. Their season tanked and he didn't exactly step up in the face of adversity.

I've been using that Rubio comp for a while. They seem like incredibly similar players. I think Rubio is a good deal better as an on ball defender while Ball is a good deal better jump shooter. But they are both PG's with good size, great BBIQ and elite passing skills. They also both seem to have some of the same limitations athletically. I think Ball ends up being a better version of Rubio

I like that comp a lot. I have much more confidence in Ball's 3-point shooting than many here so I feel he will be a lot better offensively and that while his defense won't match Rubio's he plays positionally very well and is an excellent help defender.....I'm not on the turnstile boat that many are on this board. Similar style to Rubio as he isn't a blow by guy off the dribble.....and when you are two steps ahead of everyone else you really don't have to be it's a different game you are playing.

IIRC, DSJ was actually mocked as high as #3 at one point. It seemed like there was a decent chance he'd go to the Cs before his stock dropped.

My comp for Ball has always been Kidd. I know that's not very original but the size, BBIQ, vision and ability to fill up the stat sheet are similar. Kidd was a better athlete, and Ball is a slightly better shooter (on % alone Ball is far better, but he gets dinged a little for the slow quirky release). I think the C's pick this year is pretty safe though - rookie PGs (especially a 20 year old) are basically always bad.

Even if Smith was mocked at 3 he was never better than the 3rd highest ranked PG so unless each of the top three teams were in need of a PG he was never going to go in the Top-3. I don't feel he was ever going to go ahead of Jackson or Tatum either. Wasn't he always neck and neck with Fox all season long? Once Fox passed him you had Orlando and Minnesota drafting next.....neither of whom had a PG need. So to me the only spot he fell was from 8 to 9 when the Knicks picked the physical freak in Ntilikina. It wasn't like he freefalled at least the way I saw this play out.

Wasn't Kidd an All-NBA defender though?
It isn't a perfect comp as Kidd was an excellent excellent on the ball defender so that is where the comp misses however Ball is an excellent team defender with unworldly instincts which in todays game closes the gap on his lack of Kidd's iso defense. He is also a good positional defender but will have trouble against the blow-by types.

Offensively I feel that they are very similar coming out of college complete with 65% FT% rates with excellent rotation and arc on their shots. I'm confident he'll be fine shooting the ball once the game slows down for him.

DSJ was usually mocked ahead of Fox early in the season, but as mentioned, NC State went full dumpster fire, and he looked truly apathetic in some of the games I watched, with a couple of guys who'll be lucky to land anywhere in Europe absolutely roasting him. Fox started shooting better, and the UCLA game really helped his narrative.

If DSJ's head is right, the Knicks won't be the only team regretting passing on him, but if he's the guy he was in college, he's a high usage, mediocre efficiency guy who is a questionable decision-maker and a major liability on defense. I think Dallas and Carlisle is a great fit for him.

His potential depends a lot on how much of his defensive and attitude concerns were attributable to a shitty situation. Fultz mainly got a pass for similar issues, though I suspect not so much from Ainge.

GF said a "few of the smarter people on this board" were going to be spectacularly wrong. If we eliminate all of the people who think Ball is likely to be really good, I think most of the rest of us dinged Ball because we look at his lack of athleticism and we think that means that he has a lower floor and lower ceiling than the other top prospects. However, for me personally, I'm not claiming I'm smart enough nor know enough about basketball to ignore the statistical analysis.

I'm certainly excited to see how this all plays out but very happy that it's from a distance (i.e., not on the Celtics).

Granted there are outliers who had Ball below Ojeleye and etc but from my recollection, there aren't more than a couple of people who believe that. If my memory is wrong, I apologize.

As for the rampant speculation about where Ball might slip, that was more about Lavar than Lonzo and only occurred after there were rumours out of the Lakers camp that they were considering Jackson instead of Ball. However, it quickly became apparent than Magic and Pelinka were/are in love with Ball so that discussion didn't get very serious nor last very long.

Chad Ford actually had DSJ number 2 after Fultz for a longtime. It is fair to say that he did not play much defense, but hard to ascribe his slide in the draft to that given that Fultz and Ball went 1-2. The issues surrounding effort and attitude were apparent but need to be considered in the context of the team's coach getting canned during the season.

If I stare hard enough at the two teams, I think I can understand the Knicks' decision a bit better than the Bulls. The Knicks are running the triangle (at least were). Ntilikina fits the triangle better; has great measurables (7'0" wingspan), can shoot the 3 (43.1% last year), is 18, and has had some international success. Of course, if they end up scrapping the triangle, that removes the primary reason for picking Ntilikina so that makes their decision pretty dumb.

OTOH, the Bulls are in need of players period but they decided to grab the low upside stretch 4 instead of the most explosive player in the draft for what reason? Because somehow he's going to turn into Porzingas (he isn't)? Because Dunn and DSJ couldn't play together?

Then again, this is the same franchise who basically traded six draft choices for Cameron Payne, who will be spending a good amount of time in the G-League next year.

(Summary:
  • 2 first round picks and a second-rounder to move up and select McDermott
  • 2 second round picks to offload Anthony Randolph’s contract as master negotiator GarPax (hey, the market’s the market!) had that foisted on them by Denver
  • Included another 2nd round pick with McDermott and Taj Gibson (if we wanted to take this further, he was also acquired using a first round pick...hmm...) in trade to Oklahoma City
  • Received the recently departed Lauvergne, the likely-gone Anthony Morrow, leaving only Cameron Payne.)

That is being unfair to Ntilikina. He's still 18 years old, has great length, good athleticism, is a great passer and ball handler, plays aggressive on defense and has all the tools to be a lockdown defender and the versatility to guard 1-3. He has elite physical tools and is the definition of high upside. Depending on the scouting reports you believe, he either has a high floor or really high bust potential. Never read one saying "low upside."

edit: And the Knicks did well with Kristaps and Hernangomez. Their international scouting deserves some slack.
