British prosecutors charge 6 people in deadly 1989 stadium disaster

LONDON (AP) — British prosecutors charged six people Wednesday in the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster where 96 soccer fans were crushed to death.

Those charged include the police commander on the day, David Duckenfield, who is accused of gross negligence manslaughter. The former chief of South Yorkshire Police, Norman Bettision, is charged with misconduct in public office for lying about the disaster and its aftermath.

The attorney for the South Yorkshire Police was charged with acting ‘‘with intent to pervert the course of public justice’’ relating to changes in witness statements during an inquiry into the tragedy.

‘‘Criminal proceedings have now commenced and the defendants have a right to a fair trial,’’ said Sue Hemming, the head prosecutor for special crime and counter terror.

Seeing Duckenfield and Bettison charged and properly brought to trial was once a pipe dream to anyone not involved with HFSG. For HFSG, it was basically their mission statement. I will say, the 30 For 30 about the disaster paints Duckenfield more as a bookish incompetent that had no idea how an FA Cup match should be handled, while Bettison is pure evil for the scheme to alter statements.

And if anyone thinks the HFSG is done it's work...

Looks like a Naby Keita deal may happen after all. Klopp reportedly wants Keita no matter the cost, and LFC is not put off by the 70M pound price tag.

There are now rumors that Keita has agreed to personal terms with Liverpool at a rate of 130K per week. Titi Camara (Guinean, ex - Liverpool player) tweeted today that Leipzig were informed by Naby of his desire to go to Liverpool, and they have begun looking for replacements. Keita was also conspicuously absent from RB Leipzig's new kit reveal today.

It makes sense for both clubs when you think about it. Keita has a release clause of 48M that kicks in next season. So LFC would essentially pay ~22M to get him a year early. That may seem like a lot, but waiting until next year could mean Keita to Bayern/PSG/*insert bigger team*. From RB's point of view - their goal is to compete with Bayern. While selling Naby makes that tough, it's preferable for the club to let him go to Liverpool now instead of getting less money for him in 12 months when Munich triggers his release clause.

When it comes to transfer news and rumors, I don’t believe a thing I’ve read until the teams announce it. There doesn’t seem to be any standards or oversight for what gets published over there. It’s more of a matter of throwing every name to every team and then taking credit for the one or two that actually happen (out of the hundred “announced”).

Ever since the Liverpool / VVD fiasco a few weeks ago there have been many columnists who have suggested that VVD would have to kick up a stink in order to get the deal back on track. This would appear to be the beginning of that process. If it's to be believed. But the story was in the Echo as well .. so I don't think it's just papers making up stuff.

Is there any reason for this color? I mean if you play a team like Arsenal, Manchester United with red shirt, white pants, I see a reason for not picking the red dress. Then you probably go with the away dress, alright. So why that 3rd kit and not something else?
The old neon dress at least offered an alternative (to those teams playing in red/red or red/white), but those orange dresses look very close to the red, not to the usual eye-test, but so that refs would say "not possible to play United in red and Liverpool in orange". I like weird shirts and therefore love weird 3rd kits. A purple, pink, yellow, color-bridging (like the 3rd Inter/Barca Nike shirts), etc. are perfect for such "experiments", IMO.

The third kit should be something truly special. It needs to spur folks to buy something out of the ordinary in addition to or instead of "just another red." This year they've gone with a totally different red shade already, now they're adding a spectacularly uninspired (and, as pointed out, not unique) orange that's going to look quite odd on an LFC supporter. The highlighter yellow seemed to hit it a bit better, honestly. It was identifiable to only LFC, at least for last year (or a goalkeeper of any year...).

Juventus had one of my favorite third/CL kits in recent memory that really nailed the formula. Folks bought them in droves- it was different, sharp, and unique without being overbearing.

I assume the 3rd kit is all about shirt sales these days, and New Balance seems to marking out neon as a trademark design element. I'm sure we will look back on these as classics some day...

Lots of transfer rumors these days, not so much activity. Earlier this summer Klopp was insisting that he wanted business wrapped up before the preseason started, but only one move looks imminent - Andrew Robertson from Hull. At a rumored £8m, I'm a fan. He's only 22, but with 15 international caps and 169 senior appearances across Queens Park, Dundee, and Hull. He's a nice mix between known quantity and upside. Not a major splash, but a very solid signing at a position of need.

Keita? VVD? Other midfielders or CBs? Who knows right now. This is going to drag out for a while....

Do we know if the subtle change in red is a throwback thing or a possible shift going forward?
Upon seeing the home kits I immediately thought it was an attempt to have LFC and the Red Sox in the same shade.

It's the club's 125th anniversary, the deeper shade of red is definitely a throwback. I have a couple mid-to-late 90s jerseys that are closer to this year's red than the shade of the last few years.

Actually, teams in European competition (Champions League or Europa League) are required to have a 3rd kit. I too am wondering if Orange is too close to red. How many instances are there where the red would be unsuitable but the orange would be fine, maybe vs Stoke?

I like Andrew Robertson, I think he'll do well (very good Football Manager buy).

They would also have the option of wearing the black shorts of the away kit with the shirt of the 3rd kit if they needed to.

Obviously, it's the same color as the traffic cones in Rome in 1977.

Also, according to Melissa Reddy, quotes from new Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, "[van Dijk] said that he is not available to play because he wants to leave. This is the decision."

So what's the play here? Do they let the pot increase to boiling temperature and wait for a disgruntled SH board to make the first approach?

Or do they simply make a formal offer next week - countering their previous disavowal of interest ?

Personally I think the latter is the better option. You don't want City or Chelsea sniffing around to drive up the (already exhorbitant) price.

2-1 win over Leicester City in Hong Kong. Salah and Coutinho with the goals.

Let's all celebrate winning some meaningless preseason silverware!

According to a study I just made up, the winner of thr Asian Trophy goes on to win the league 140% of the time.

This Rangnick / Amadou / Sega drama around Rangnick's comment about Keïta's entourage in a "Guinean village" is the craziest / most hilarious saga in my memory as transfers go. Fax machine included

Trying not to get too excited, but this side with Mané -- Firmino -- Salah up top and Coutinho in midfield looks pretty great in the pressing and counter-attack and are taking it to Bayern.

It's fun to watch, but ultimately as predictive of success as pummeling Barca in preseason was last year.

We already know they can score against teams that are trying to attack as well, the key question is what they can do against the sides with 10 behind the ball.

Great touch by Ryan Kent to bring down a lobbed pass followed by a pretty sweet move on the touchline to set up Grujić.

Looks like the goal was ruled off due to Lallana interfering with Ulreich though

The Renato Sanches rumors can hopefully end after this game as well. He looks like a player who lost all confidence in his play.

Is there a more Sturridge sequence than being in alone, chipping the keeper beautifully, then pulling up with a strained quad?

The Sturridge hat trick. Still out there and looks ok for those not watching. In another words, he'll be out for 4-6 weeks.

Edit - and he's off

They are--no joke--more likely to win the CL than the EPL this year for precisely this reason. They need another plan for the Huddersfields.

So now the Reds will take on Atletico tomorrow for the Audi Cup, which would give them quite the double of meaningless preseason trophies. Yes, tomorrow. Why worry about injuries right before the season? It's the Audi Cup!

That game should be fun if for no other reason to see Fernando Torres take on Liverpool now that the fans are over him bailing to Chelsea. He will likely get a warm reception from both sets of supporters.

Sturridge says it was just fatigue, hopefully a bullet dodged there (albeit, a bullet from what seems to be an ever-firing automatic rifle)

I hope it's just fatigue, but (bearing in mind I'm not a professional athlete) I've never had a muscle so locally tired I grabbed it and winced.

A duck is a duck at this point. He's going to spend significant time on the sidelines somewhere with one of his tissue paper ligaments fractionally longer than its twin on the other side of his body.

Subs: Karius, Mignolet, Firmino, Origi, Henderson, Grujic, Robertson, Matip, Kent, Ejaria, Alexander-Arnold.

Taking few chances in the second of back-to-back games.

Why on earth is Mané playing matches in back to back days - just back to full training - with Kent/Ejaria on the bench?

Torres starts on the bench for Atletico. Should be a fun moment when he is subbed in.

Coutinho, Salah, Moreno and Lovren are rested entirely, they aren't even on the bench.

Bayern lost 2-0 to Napoli in the consolation game and got booed off the pitch.
