So fucking disappointing. Losing in the Chowder Cup finals sucks because you play all 5 games including 2 on Sunday and don't even win.

My body can't take this shit anymore.

Hey. Be thankful. This team was really fun they had a great run and almost won the Division. They have some great young talent. The top line is amazing and Pasta is a breakout superstar. We have a lot to look forward to next year.

Did I see you're still playing the Open A division?

Haha my Thursday night team played there (and also lost in the finals). I played in the 25C (there was no B this year) with my other group of guys.

The Open A division was awesome men’s league hockey.

Summer goals:
  • Get down to +12 from +20 on the local course (Pier Park, Portland, OR)
  • Par the Philobatross hole (The disc golf equivalent of #13 at Augusta)
  • Join a weekly league
  • Un-archerize my life.
You know, the little things.

It was a good season despite the ending.

I'm rooting for the Knights now because that's the craziest outcome.

I feel your pain...I play in the Cranberry Cup every fall, and the finals are Saturday night, which means a game Saturday am, and if you make it trying to not get drunk all day on Nantucket waiting for the finals. My team has lost in the finals the last 3 years, and I definitely haven't been sober for any of them. Not the best scenario for the goalie...

I’m hoping the Preds win it, only because I think their fanbase is awesome (shows up, is LOUD, doesn’t have any entitled douchiness) and because I think it will chap the Montreal fanbase’s collective ass if PK wins a Cup there while they wallow in the basement.

As I get older, schadenfreude is less and less a motivation, but I'd be happy with this outcome and the collective Montrealer pain that comes along with it as well.

I'm sure that I don't know...something about semi-competitive hockey players staying sober for games, its not anything I can get behind, and not really the point of the weekend in my opinion.
This is why I don't do Chowder Cup...group of AB buddies of mine, did it for years. Problem was it was just a bunch of guys who grew up together and played pickup together. We'd go have fun for the weekend but we'd be playing teams that were super competitive- they were all men's league teams, they had plays and systems, all wore cages and full equipment...just brutal. It wasn't fun, so we just stopped going.

I want to play good hockey, but I want to skate with guys (or girls) who get it. Weekend tournaments are for having fun, not necessarily winning a $10 trophy. But YMMV.

Eh, there’s a balance here. I’m pretty competitive, so my feeling is that if I’m there, I’m gonna try to win. I'm not going to be a super hardo or anything, but I'm also not gonna get hammered before games. I skate my hardest in tournaments by far, since they only come around once in a while and winning is fun. (It doesn't help that I can't play hockey at all while drinking, unlike every other sport). Same with showing up for games on time, etc. Just be an adult and get there in reasonable condition and give it a good effort. I'm not saying people need to be in bed by 8pm, but staying out until 4am then not being able to skate the next day isn't as funny to me as it is to others.

As far as opponents go - I'm with you guys there. I've gotten trucked multiple times in the Chowder Cup the last few years and it sucks (only one actually called for a penalty too). No one needs to get hurt/fight/etc so that's dumb. You can play hard without being a douchebag try-hard about it. Plays, systems, full gear....fuck that too. Go play men's league hockey.

But once the game's over? Then it's gone and you're there to have fun. No need to dwell on it or have a bad weekend - that's when the real fun starts. The sitting around drinking, bullshitting, seeing people you rarely see is the best part of the tourney and way more rewarding than actually winning...but doing all that then winning is even better.

I'm making progress on my left stops on skates, and my transitions. We are in like week 8 of our lessons, so it is focusing more on drills at this point than skating, so I need to try to get out to stick time some more and work on my backwards crossovers. Just switched sticks... I had a 6 lie before and switched to a 5 and it's like night and day when it comes to stick handling.

I'm pretty happy with where I'm at considering that up until about 4 months ago I hadn't even been on the ice since high school 20 years ago, and even that was just doing stupid teenager stuff skating in circles at the public skate at Armstrong Rink down in Plymouth. I think the biggest thing I need to work on is just committing stuff to muscle memory. I can do everything they ask of me for the most part, but when I start combining two at once (like stopping and stick handling) my brain turns to mush because I still have to think about everything so much.

Nice- glad to see you're sticking with it. It is not an easy sport to pick up, especially later in life.

Good move changing the lie of your stick...if I use a stick with a significantly different lie (or curve), it's like I've never played before.

Keep us updated.

Thanks! And will do.

I'm hitting 5 AM stick time today, since I'm working nights and have tonight off, basically going to spend an hour working on backwards skating, transitions, and especially front to back direction changes ("W" drills, skating forward, and then backpedaling the opposite direction without stopping)... that's the one I'm really struggling with right now, as the footwork is completely eluding me.

Because you asked...

One of the challenges of going forward to backwards is that people often make two changes of direction with their feet. the turn around the cone and get their feet moving E/W, and THEN they shift their weight the other way, and turn their feet in the opposite direction (W/E) as it were. What you want to do is skate past the cone (or wherever your target transition point is), then shift your weight like you're stopping, but then push into your C cuts.

I hope the uploaded diagram makes that a little more understandable. The correct way would be on the left.

Edit: or if I've just confused the fuck out of you, ignore it all.

It's amazing how you start to take these things for granted after you've been skating for a long time. Like, if someone asked me how you stopped I would have absolutely no idea how to explain it to them.

Haha I texted Dummy Hoy that exact same thing. The example of going from skating forwards to backwards - I have no idea how that happens, I just do it naturally without even thinking about it. I couldn't teach it if you paid me.

Thanks guys! I will keep that in mind this week. I totally get how once it's committed to muscle memory it's hard to describe, and I think I'm getting there, but I have a ways to go. I also need to do a MUCH better job of forcing myself to work out and eat well during the week.... being on night shift is wreaking havoc with my body right now, so I'm trying to figure out how best to make that work.

The second or sometimes third 18 every week has helped my game a bunch. I played 36 today at +20 both rounds (including one course for the first time ever). I started the summer regularly around +25.

Edit:
Also, please play this card if I talk about disc golf too much. I'm past the "learning to play" and into the "why the hell did I get up at 6 to throw discs in a field for 2 hours" phase.

After today, I'll have had 8 18 hole rounds and 2 9 holes rounds since April 14th.

I expect that rate to continue to rise once I move into my new house that's minutes away from my club.

Nap had a good idea involving turning the storage area behind the seats into like a kiddie car seat. But, alas, I have not discovered something like that for myself.

I'd golf this weekend, but got a charity 3v3 tournament in Haverhill. And when I say Golf, I mean at like 7am on the weekend.

NOT IDEAL.

Did you see my brethren from Brooklyn at Warrior? I think we (they, as I was finishing up a show and couldn't make it) played a 25 and up team for the championship and won it. We have Raccoons on White and Blue jerseys and sport 2 or 3 top echelon forwards and a couple of good DMen. Our goalie, Geo, reportedly had a good tourney, as well. Still waiting for my championship jacket....

I ordered 2 boxes of golf balls so I'm probably good for at least 1 round at some point. In case anyone wants to feel good about their game.
Wonder how much of a pita it would be to do a weekday morning round at Highfields and then hit Tree House.

I have become physically unable to sleep past 7am now. It’s quite concerning and a sign that I’m indeed now old.

Although I moved into my new house in the suburbs yesterday, also indicating my advancing age, but this one I’m ok with.

1) after one has children, the rare opportunity to sleep in at all is taken advantage of, no matter how old one is.

2) did you buy a place? Where at?
