2016 second round pick Cyrus Jones was a disappointment as a rookie; he muffed kicks, he blew coverages, he missed tackles, and he got kicked out of games. He said he didn't feel like a part of the team and seemed determined to change that:
"What I did this year was not me," he said. "I don't care how anybody tries to sugarcoat it. Yes, I was a rookie. But I feel I should always be one of the best players on the field, no matter where I am."
He even changed his uniform number. But in game one of the preseason, Jones was notably awful:
Not exactly Ben Watson-like hustle to catch the receiver. He gave up another long TD later and was targeted all night by Jags QBs.
This reminds me of the Darius Butler situation; talented guy and high draft pick plays himself off the roster with repeated mistakes. For sure, Jones has a lot of game action and practices before being cut. And maybe he has three great games and gets out of the funk he's mired in.
