Since they're both season awards rather than career milestones, it seems logical they should be in the same season, so I went with *that* guy and was shocked it was only 12%. I did really well in the MVP column because the Angels and Rangers both had relatively obscure guys win the award. Alas, I finished 8/9 anyway, because I passed up a couple of easy Tiger RoY's to instead answer Al Kaline when I was trying to think of Harvey Kuenn.

Well, you only had one other correct answer if it was same season. And he was the leading percentage, anyway.

It blows my mind how y’all are able to do this. I don’t think I’ve seen a single one I could complete, much less nail the randoms for.

I thought the MVP and ROY box meant the same year so I assumed the answer was obvious.

Same. I would've loved to have used Pedey there instead. I should have landed my second 9/9 ever but missed dead center thinking I was being clever.

Yeah that was my thinking too. If it's seasonal then it's the same season.

Agree with you that this is a helpful technique, but speaking as a 60’s/70’s baseball nerd who read Ball Four about a dozen times as a teenager, Lou Piniella doesn’t count in this game for the Pilots. He never played a regular season game for them because he was traded to the Royals at the end of spring training. As Bouton wrote, “Lou Piniella has the red ass”

edit: and I had to look this one up to be sure, Hoyt Wilhelm was taken by KC in the expansion draft, but he was traded that winter to the Angels and never played a game for the Royals. But he still makes for a pretty good cheat code in this game; pitched for nine different teams.

2nd edit: sorry for being That Guy. Had to sit through my son's piano lesson and had nothing to do except look up Hoyt Wilhelm's career on my phone.
Thanks for doing the dirty work and going the extra mile! We owe that of course to your son & his keyboard :)

Yeah I used all Expos for the bottom row and I also played the Kaat card top center. Based on this thread I now understand why Tim Raines is above 10% for bottom center.

9/9 rarity score 34. Only one answer below 1% today

Not a good day on this one, didn't feel like thinking too much, as I could have probably come up with better Nationals/Expos choices. Picked the wrong 70s Orioles pitcher and wrong 70s Twins pitcher for those spots.

You can see the most popular picks and percentages change if you refresh the page after you're done. It's interesting to see how things shift as fans wake up in different time zones.

I did all Expos for the Nationals row today, not to show off, but because I remember them way better than the Nats. Hawk, Rock, and El Presidente are way cooler than some chump like Adam Eaton.

First ever 9/9 for me. And I'm not sure I'll ever beat this 34.

Was able to use a lot of "played for everyone" go-tos today. Colon, Hawkins, EJax, Hill, Zeile. This is clearly the grid of someone who played a lot of fantasy baseball from 1995-2005.

Damn it. I accidentally hit Oswaldo instead of Orlando. I had a good one going.

Didn't complete but did get to use a few former Red Sox.
Upper left I went with Matt Murton. The "One" the Red Sox let get away.

Twins row is giving me a tough time today. Remembering to use one of my strategies helped me to finally get the first two, but Twins/O's has me hung up.
I was listening to an MLB game while driving today and when the starting lineup was announced I hit BINGO. Aaron Hicks 9/9, 5 former Sox used with a score of 35. My best grid to date.

Blanked for quite a while on Twins-Cubs but in the end came up with a former Sox for the spot. Former Sox for the entire Twins row, in fact.

9/9 with a rarity score of 160. Mixture of some that are painfully obvious and some that I'm really proud of for getting.

The only reason I got Marty Cordova is because I was talking about baseball's most memorable injuries the day before and he came up.

I'm usually only happy with double-digit rarity scores anymore, but I'll take it. There are only 4 possibilities for one of the squares and I have no memory of two of them playing for the team... and honestly, I'd have never thought the one qualified for the feat. Also, I'm a possible answer today.

This was a good one for me. I was lucky to

Remember Fernando Rodney but had no idea that Isringhausen or Percival ever pitched for the Rays.

Today's took me about a minute. Probably could have lowered the rarity score if I took more time but it was nice not really agonizing over any of them for once.

I don't get the 300+ saves for the Red Sox. I've already wasted two obvious relievers from other teams but no cigar.
Are hints allowed?
There are 9 possible answers. Only one of them was a homegrown Red Sox, if that helps. Two of them won rings with Boston (including the homegrown guy). One answer is on the current roster.

Bear in mind it's 300 career saves regardless of the team. He only had to pitch for the Sox at some point in his career.

For my left middle pick, was this the best picture they could find? It's hilarious

Also, I had Percival in my head for bottom center and then for some reason decided to go with Kimbrel.

any-hoo...

Had to ruin a potentially great grid today with Sox/Yanks by including the stupid Devil Rays, huh? I already blew this one because I thought Raul Ibanez played for them, and I'll waste too much time today trying to come up with some 2nd-tier closer who racked up most of his saves elsewhere who they rented at the trade deadline. I don't care how many AL East titles they win, they'll always be the least memorable franchise ever for me, with their crappy stadium, generic-font uniforms, and revolving door of players. Oh and fuck Joe Maddon, Carl Crawford, Matt Garza, and DeWayne Staats, wherever they are. /end rant

One may have been home-grown, but he needed to be shipped up to Boston regardless

As an aside, I wonder how SoSH will react when Craig Kimbrel goes into the Hall of Fame.

And I ended up 7/9 RS 229 because I tried using the human cheat code for center square and it didn't work. And yeah I guess I should have remembered Fernando Rodney for bottom center but again, Devil Rays. Wasted two nice guesses for top left and top right.

I suck I suck suck!!!

I rushed Fernando Rodney into the 300+ saves for the Rays, and then got stuck on the Rays/Mariners box. I immediately realized my error - knew and should have gone with Roberto Hernandez in 300+ saves for Rays - and ended up blanking on a Rays/Mariner (which I was positive I'd end up getting).

Debated between good old "pitched for every team ever" Jamie Moyer, and James Shields (for some reason, he stuck in my head). Neither were right, and my brain sucks.

Although I did get to reminisce about old friend Heathcliff Slocumb, which ended pretty OK for us, so...small victories.

I had no idea Rodney, Isringhausen and Roberto Hernandez even reached 300 saves. Drew a total blank on that one. And 243 guys played for the Sox and Yankees. How many of them do we, as Sox fans, have a positive impression of? Boomer and anyone else?
