There are threads about individual Maine Celtics, but thought this would be a useful catch-all thread for observations and news.
Went to the game today against the Gold, the Nuggets' team. Highly entertaining, as the Expo always is.
Observations:
- The Gold have Jay Huff, out of Virginia, and he seems like he could be useful big for someone - seemed more athletic than Kornet and drained threes from the top. 28 points on 11-19 shooting in 34 minutes. I know you can't take too much away from bigs in the G League, since they're often pretty unopposed, but he was fun to watch and the other dudes looking up to him.
- Walsh is legit athletic. Was throwing down windmills and through-the-legs dunks in warmups, and in-game had more than one flying dunk put-back. But he's definitely got that bull-in-a-china-shop thing going on. In warm-ups, you could tell he was struggling a bit with his shot, and it comes off his hands weird, with a little sideways rotation. But then he was 4-8 from three in game! Regardless, he does not stand out on the G-league floor — but there were a lot of good players out there today.
- JD can get to his little teardrop at this level at will and hits them at a good clip, his shot is smooth and he's taking it like a first-rate scorer (whether he is or not) off of little screens and off the dribble. He went for 19/8/11 and it was a noticable difference when he was on the floor vs. not in terms of flow of the offense and his decision-making was better than DJ Steward's. But he's very aggressive and that leads to turnovers and his three all came late when the Gold pulled away.
- Drew Peterson reminded my son of Hauser in person. And he can shoot it, for sure, but he's not as big as Hauser and that probably matters on D.
- Their point guard, Gillespie, played at Villanova and basically didn't come off the floor - 45 minutes. Tidy little 22/9/15 on the night. Doubt he's big enough for the NBA, but dude can ball.
