The big problem with the AH jokes was that they weren’t funny, not that it’s a taboo subject. This is the stool he kicked out from under him? You know who else was hung? Just kinda dumb and not so much funny.

Yeah, the Brady 9/11 joke at least had some structure behind that made the punchline land. The Hernandez stuff was lazy, just "yeah, I'm going there" stuff.

I watched Affleck’s bit again. FWIW, I don’t think he was joking — at all. I think he was deadly serious, and angry in particular at online fans who attack Brady (and maybe celebrities in general) directly via social media. Not sure if this was the forum for it, but it strikes me that he was trying to make a point.

Affleck looked like he got fitted for dentures right before going on. It looked like his front teeth were about to fall out about five times.

I just started watching this. The opening bit was great. Then came Kevin Hart. No one appreciates the humor of Kevin Hart more than Kevin Hart. I can't imagine how many comedy careers he's inspired by people thinking "I too can make fortune for not being funny."

And now out comes Jeff Ross, which is like the reverse of going from Tom Brady to Cam Newton.

Affleck's slot was very weird and it really just seemed like projection based on all the shit he's dealt with through the years on social media. I think the point was that if the GOAT is hearing online criticism about his play then obviously the social media trolls are just plain stupid? I think the only thing he said that caused me to crack even the littlest smile was when he said he had a question for Belichick and said something offhand about not being about Malcolm Butler but even that wasn't delivered well enough for me to remember the details.

Honestly I thought the person that got roasted the hardest all night was Gronk. And most of it was fantastic.

Fun event. Cathartic for a lot of those guys, I bet. But good on all of them from RKK to BB to TB12 to Drew to knowing how to roll with the punches. I bet they’ll all be closer after that.

Also I think Glaser has taken the mantle from Ross as roast GOAT. She’s always the best part of every roast I’ve seen.

Yeah, she destroyed the fuck out of Ross IMHO. Ross wasn’t bad but she was out there hitting homers and he wasn’t.

Same the boyfriend joke killed me too.

Agreed on Ross - he was alright. But even he’s gotta know that she’s passed him.

Other sneaky great moments were RKK saying he wouldn’t invite Jules to his funeral, BB calling the Apple TV series his roast, Hart getting RKK and BB to toast, and almost everything Bledsoe did. I thought when it came to the players Drew, Jules, and Peyton were all fantastic.

Other note: it’s so much easier to like Peyton these days. Probably because he’s firmly #2, but I don’t know - I just have a hard time not liking him.

Going in, I really thought that was going to be terrible, but it ended up being pretty good. I love Nikki Glaser and she’s always fantastic, but I had really low expectations for the rest of them - mostly Kevin Hart who always sucks. And he did.

Bledsoe was the surprise of the night for me. He was great.

I made it to Tom Segura’s part last night and wasn’t overly impressed. Nikki and Drew were great. I’m watching BB on the stage now. Loved the Darth Vader entrance.

I'm watching him now, and am surprised how funny he's been.

I'll probably watch her segment and then dump out of this, because I don't think I can make it through three hours of this.
Fast forward through Bert/Tom and Randy Moss for starters. If you like Gronk saying Gronk things watch him but you're not missing much. Watch Drew and Jules.

BB's part was great. I appreciated the "not to be confused with the 11 episode roast of me on Apple TV." The bit on Alex Guerrero was good, and I liked his joke about Kevin Hart-- I very much share the opinion.

Tom Segura was absolutely the worst part of last night except for maybe Affleck. Embarrassing that a professional comedian was way worse than all these footballers.

Glaser was great. For me, it was the Drew line, the one about Tom walking away from his pregnant girlfriend, and the Gronk crypto one. And of course, all the shots at Kevin Hart and Jeff Ross.

The cruelest joke in this roast was asking Randy Moss to follow Nikki Glaser.

God, Tom Seguara and Bert K (look up not funny in the dictionary and you see that shirtless idiot) were monumentally bad.

Everyone else had at least something. Hart is getting killed in this thread but I thought he was good. Not great like Glaser, the GOAT, and Bledsoe, but not bad.

I haven't watched any of it yet, but disappointed to hear that Randy bombed.
Randy was in a tough spot. He followed Nikki Glaser. He bombed but not in the same way Segura or Affleck did, I just came away thinking “poor guy, he’s not a professional at this”.

They were told not to go after Tom's kids, which I get but I was expecting Glaser to do a "if I call you daddy will you kiss me on the lips" type joke. But Glaser is amazing.

Hart I think did a good job as emcee and generally shepherding the roast. For a live roast (unlike the Comedy Central ones where we only get the best bits) the quality to duds ratio was very high.

It's SoSH so I'm sure we have someone who knows the behind the scenes of one of these types of events, be it Comedy Central or whatever. My assumption is there are writers that put together jokes for the non-comedians and give them stuff to choose from or work directly with the person to come up with some bits. Randy's spot looked like he told the writer's "I'm good, me and my buddies put something together" and they didn't fully understand what they were supposed to be doing.

where I was last at
IMO Nikki Glaser was the star last night. She was very funny and obscene and more than proved she was the biggest swinging dick on the dias.
This was not her first nationally televised circle jerk.

I thought TB12's concern about offending or embarassing RK interesting given all the other tasteless stuff that passed the Brady sense of propriety.

Yup. Edelman and Gronk were great. I loved getting BB and Brady to take a shot together.

Yeah... I mean you had a Hamas joke and tons of Hernandez jokes, but you can't joke about RK? Absolutely silly.

I assume that Kraft was off limits, just doesn’t make sense for him to get nothing if he wasn’t.

I don’t usually think Kevin Hart is funny, but I thought he did a pretty great job last night.

Bill was perfect, so glad he agreed to do it.

I haven't watched yet, but it doesn't surprise me that Nikki was head and shoulders above everyone else. She is an experienced roaster, which is a different skill set than straight standup or whatever it is that Tom S & Bert do. A lot of comedians think 'I can do crowd work and bust balls', but the problem is it takes some precise references and a lot of research/preparation to REALLY twist the knife on a good roast joke. If the non-comedians get a good enough writer, it can make the standups look unskilled by comparison.

In retrospect I'm wondering if Bill Burr was asked and turned it down. Either because he isn't a "roast" guy in general (just a great ball-buster), he felt he's too much of a fanboy of TB and wouldn't be able to go all-in with the knife, or he didn't want to "one up" his fellow comedians with the unfair depth of Pats knowledge he has. But what we don't know is if Bill actually helped write material for the sports guys up there. He is probably friendly with all these guys and as the resident Boston sports fan/comedian that would have been the first person anyone should call for good material.

If folks are interested, Nikki Glaser was on Howard Stern this morning, and getting into a lot of the details about prepping for it, etc. She's always funny, in every context, IMO.

I haven't seen the roast yet, but will definitely fit it in somewhere during the NBA/NHL playoffs this week.

I do know Tony Hinchcliffe has ton a ton of writing for both roasts and others stand ups’ acts, so I wouldn’t doubt if he, Ross, Hart, and Glaser put a lot of this together. Especially given the level of brutality, it had Ross, Glaser and Hinchcliffe in particular written all over it.
