Alphabet Soup: the NASL/USL/CPL/NISA/PDL/NPSL/UPSL/NCAA Soccer Thread

The Rays are buying the Tampa Bay Rowdies, to be announced tomorrow. http://www.tampabay.com/sports/rowdies/2018/10/01/tampa-bay-rays-to-purchase-rowdies-soccer-club/ Lots of interesting interplay. The Rays could use the very valuable location as an alternate (or threatened) location for a...

MLS 2018: More Barco Than Bite

They went with Club Internacional de Futbol Miami. Probably will be called Inter, but Club Miami would be amazing. Like the name of the best terrible 90s MTV dance show

MLS 2018: More Barco Than Bite

I don't really pay attention the MLS scheduling; how do they only have 2 home games in an 8 game stretch?

Robert Kraft buying stake in Sevilla

Athletico won in 2014, but besides that, this is a two-team league. Sevilla is an interesting choice, with some positives. They have been very good in Europa League, and they are the best and most consistent team in the southern part of Spain. Sevilla is the fourth largest city and metro. They...

2022 World Cup In Qatar: 1,000 Workers Already Dead

My hope is the 2020 Euro and 2026 WC show that one country shouldn't host these things any longer. Spread out the burden.

The Rays and their nagging attendance problem. Will a new stadium solve that?

The problems with east of 75 is there's absolute no foot traffic over there, and the current fans in St. Pete won't go beyond Ybor, and they want to keep as many St. Pete fans as possible. A lot of them already work in downtown Tampa so they won't have to get in a car. I've also thought the...

The Rays and their nagging attendance problem. Will a new stadium solve that?

Parking is one of the few things they don't need to worry about. There are two large parking garages in Ybor, and a number of smaller lots. On the other side of the expressway near the cruise dock there are a bunch more parking lots and small garages. And then further south at Channelside Mall...

The Rays and their nagging attendance problem. Will a new stadium solve that?

Starting with a fixed roof isn't aspirational. They should have started with a retractable roof and went away if necessary. The sticker shock for me is the price without a retractable roof. Marlins Park was built for $676m in 2017 dollars and has a roof the opens. $200m above that, with less...

The Rays and their nagging attendance problem. Will a new stadium solve that?

$240 million for a roof that doesn't even open, that doesn't make much sense. I recall them saying previously that they wanted to stay in the $600-650m range and a fixed roof would keep costs more manageable. As a former Tampa resident it's frustrating because I'd like the Rays to move to Tampa...

    2018 MMA/UFC

I get it for DC, he has so much going on outside the octagon. He owns a gym, he coaches high school wrestling, he's an analyst and commentator on TV, I think he does some corner work too.

    2018 MMA/UFC

Dana said in the post fight that Lesnar has been in the testing protocol for a week and has to wait six months, so that puts a DC-Lesnar fight in early 2019. DC said he'll only take big fights in the interim. He mentioned Jones, maybe Gustafson or Stipe, and then Lesnar, and then he's retiring...

MLS 2018: More Barco Than Bite

Speaking of potential, I think if/when Almiron is sold, Martino will have solid proof of concept and ideally others follow, not just to Atlanta but elsewhere. It could end up being a good buy low sell high move. Why haven't other MLS clubs done move like this that much?

MLS 2018: More Barco Than Bite

I generally agree, it's just that for me "unsustainable" means "will eventually cease to exist". I don't want to see more situations like McKennie (or Kitchen for that matter), but the league isn't going to fold because of it, it'll just perpetually and significantly underperform its potential.

MLS 2018: More Barco Than Bite

That's a really good article (I've been pleasantly surprised by The Athletic's soccer coverage). I didn't realize TAM had grown to be basically a second, slushy salary cap. I think calling option 1 unsustainable is a bit overstated. It is sustainable by virtue of a timid, purposefully low...
