Remaining Free Agent Speculation and Signings (Trades, too)

OK, this made me laugh. It would make sense if the Yankees are at least in touch with Boras about JM. But signing him would be costly, as has been noted.

Remaining Free Agent Speculation and Signings (Trades, too)

I agree 100%. I don't see much benefit to the Sox in a one-year deal, especially if they can't give him a QO when he leaves.

Remaining Free Agent Speculation and Signings (Trades, too)

I agree with those who wouldn't have given Snell the same deal the Giants did, because of the opt-out and the QO. And I also agree that he probably wouldn't have taken this deal from the RS because he had a preference for the West Coast. And I join those who would not give Montgomery a deal...

Revised contract predictions for Snell and Montgomery

I doubt anyone has offered Montgomery five years guaranteed, and I don’t think the RS should. But I would do four at 22-25 AAV (w/incentives if at the low end) and a fifth year option. That could be the line Breslow has drawn.

    Offseason rumors

I could understand extending Houck if a good chunk of the money is tied to outcomes - i.e., a moderate base salary (assume solid reliever) and than add incentives based on IP (if he turns out to be a starter) or games finished (if he ends up a closer). I think it's possible to find a reasonable...

    Offseason rumors

If there is any team that thinks Montgomery is worth $125m guaranteed, he'd probably already be signed. He and Boras are probably still looking for the 5th guaranteed year and no one wants to give it. Some teams may be willing to offer the same or higher AAV on a shorter deal, or with opt-outs...

    Offseason rumors

So I was thinking this morning about why Montgomery isn't signed, and pondered the possibility that maybe the Red Sox don't really want him - and that maybe this is not really because of ownership, but is a decision being made by Breslow for "baseball reasons." Now I think everyone would agree...

    2024 Red Sox Spring Training

I’m very excited about Anthony but am willing to wait a year . In the meantime I’m excited to see what O’Neill and Abreau can do. Fortunately, I don’t think we’ll be seeing too much of Yoshida in LF.

    Offseason rumors

Right - if it's 3 years or less, he probably winds up with the Rangers or someone else. If the Sox go 5 years, they probably get him. My bet is that they are trying to get him for 4 years maybe with one or more option years.
  10. Dewey'sCannon

    Offseason rumors

That's probably what Boras is looking for, but that's also why he's still unsigned - it doesn't seem that any team is willing to offer 5+ years with an opt-out after 1. And an opt-out after 1 (or maybe even 2) doesn't make sense for the Red Sox. I'd go a little higher on the AAV to keep the...

    Offseason rumors

That's right in the ballpark of what I was thinking, except I probably wouldn't offer an opt-out after year 2, since year 3 is when the big 3 prospects are most likely to be here and hitting their strides. I would offer to vest the fifth year if he hits 170 innings in year 4, with a buyout of 5M...

    Offseason rumors

FWIW, I interpreted the Breslow quote as meaning he hadn't seen the price/years drop yet on Montgomery.
  13. Dewey'sCannon

If the RS sign Montgomery are you satisfied with the off-season?

If they sign Montgomery, I have to assume it will be a 'reasonable" deal - I don't think they are going to panic and sign him to something they don't think is reasonable, and I'll trust their judgment on that. So I voted "good."

    Offseason rumors

If someone from within the Red Sox FO is the "industry source" for these leaks, then I think they are putting their job at risk. They'd have to have a pretty serious axe to grind to take that risk. It's not impossible, but I still don't think it's likely that this "source" is someone within the...
  15. Dewey'sCannon

    Offseason rumors

I don't think that Boras is trying to "embarrass" the Red Sox. But pressure? Goad? Chide? Maybe. Remember, the consistent Boras message is "If you don't sign my guys (and pay what I'm asking), you're not trying to win." I'm confident in saying that I think his non-public messaging is consistent...

    Offseason rumors

Respectfully, I disagree that "we're past the point." Just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't, or can't. I do negotiations (labor negotiations) for a living. Sometimes you have to be persistent, or patient, and wait for the other side to make reasonable offers before...

    Offseason rumors

So who might be this "industry source?" Seems highly unlikely to be someone with the Red Sox. Or another team (because how would they know this?) So maybe another writer? If so, what's their source for this? The other possibility - probably most likely - is that this is coming from Boras or...

Glass Half Full nuggets for 2024 Sox

Agree on all of these. They may only be a .500-ish team, but hope is not lost. I'll keep watching, unless and until thing go terribly wrong (like last September, which was just too painful to watch).

    Offseason rumors

Yes, I think it's the playing time - Gio has a pretty clear path to being the regular 3b in Detroit, and go back on the market next winter. He would not have had the same opportunity for regular ABs here.

    Offseason rumors

The only way this makes sense to me is if they are truly still going after Montgomery (or Snell) but are keeping mum on this publicly because they don't want to give any additional leverage to Boras, with whom they are engaged in a game of chicken.
