    Max Power

I don't get the assumption that if Boras is the agent the player will cost more. He is reputed to be a jerk, will ask for a ridiculous contract and is willing to hold out until spring, but it still comes down to supply and demand. He wasn't able to pull a rabbit out of a hat for Drew last...

You mean the Cardinals in 64?

    WS Game 7!

Off the top of my head the last pitchers to start with 2 days rest were Lonborg in 67 and Lolich and McLain in 68. Longborg was a disaster but the other two pitched complete games while allowing only 1 run. Still, the Giants would have been better off if they had started Bumgarner in game 4.

    WS Game 7!

Yeah, we're talking about 1912, 1924 and 1962. I don't believe it has much relevence to tonight's game.

    UNC's academic scandal

The problem is that not everyone has the reading, writing, mathematical and organizational skills needed to become a successful college student. This is compounded by the 3+ hours of practice/training required of athletes. Any special program for athletes could not include GE requirements...

What happened to the intangible Mr. Gomes?

Should the Red Sox go all out to sign Yasmani Tomas?

There are still some teams that would share the hope that he could someday hit well enough to be an upper-tier CFer so there is still some value. Even if he rakes at Pawtucket next year there will still be concerns about the adjustment to the ML so I don't believe it will benifit the Sox to keep...

Should the Red Sox go all out to sign Yasmani Tomas?

Yeah, if they can get Tomas for a more modest contract having him play at AAA for a period of time is acceptable. One of Snod's linked articles states that Tomas is almost major league ready so we don't know if that means it will take 1-2 months or most of 2015. And although the issue has been...

Should the Red Sox go all out to sign Yasmani Tomas?

The either/or part of my post is that the Cuban players have been viewed as being major league ready and not as prospects. If Tomas signs for a similar contract as Castillo he would be a pretty expensive minor league player. Once the Cardinals went with Adams they moved Craig so I don't see how...

Should the Red Sox go all out to sign Yasmani Tomas?

I believe that Tomas and Castillo is an either/or decision; do you want a power-hitting corner outfielder or a Johnny Damon-type centerfielder? I would have preferred Tomas as either Betts or Castillo, who are capable of playing center, will probably end up in LF. If the Sox were to now sign...

Giancarlo Stanton hit in jaw by pitch

Sounds as if Stanton is going to be just fine and there is even talk about him returning before the end of this season. All the talk about him losing $200 million, or so, was a little bit premature.

Ron Washington resigned/fired due to sexual assault?

I think the Asian reporter description is directed more to nationality than to ethnicity.  Because of Darvish, there are many Japanese reporters that cover the Rangers and she could be one of them.

Vazquez plays defense, or The New Molina

OK. Maybe the Pena and Boone numbers are good enough, but it hardly resolves the Ginger/Mary Ann debate between him and Swihart.

Vazquez plays defense, or The New Molina

The fact that CV is putting the ball in play is not a guarantee that BABIP will come around in his favor.  I haven't seen a lot of his ABs, but there have been many weak grounders and lazy flyballs.  Bob Boone and Tony Pena rarely struckout, but put up career OPS of .661 and .673, respectivley.

    MLB batting averages - WTF?

My theory is that as the number of atheletes participating in high school sports has increased there has been a disproportionate increase in the number of pitchers. You don't necessarily have to be a good athlete to throw 95 miles an hour. Position players are more likely to have other options.

    Will Middlebrooks: Now or never

WMB needs ABs and Cecchini needs to play 3B. WMB is not going to forget how to play 3B so DH, OF or 1B will suffice. Unless he's to be traded Cecchini's only possible role with Boston, at least for 2015, is at third. For Pawtucket, developing players is more important than winning games so...

    MLB batting averages - WTF?

People have been discussing the current level of offense as if it was some kind of terminal disease, but I still enjoy watching games.  Is a 10-9 game significantly more enjoyable than a 3-2 game?  Also, more runs mean more blowouts.  Unless the offense starts approaching 1968 levels it's a...

    Will Middlebrooks: Now or never

The last story I heard was that he didn't like wearing contact lenses. For astigmatism you do need hard lenses which can be uncomfortable. The other thing about astigmatism is that contacts often result in a better correction than from glasses. Poor eyesight could explain his failures at the...

Edes: JBJ down to AAA, Betts up

Actually, I do. I know it's a SSS, but according to bbref he already has 1.0 WAR after only 102 PA. I'm on the West Coast so I've only seen him play a handful of games, but he seems to be far more advanced than X or JBJ. He does a good job of staying in the strike zone and is very quick to...

Edes: JBJ down to AAA, Betts up

I agree. If he stays he needs a position. The reason Holt has played so much this year is because of the bad offensive performance of so many players. With Cespedes and Castillo there will be fewer opportunities for a super-sub in 2015. Also, Betts is right-handed so a platoon won't make...
