Liverpool’s attack is just so much more dangerous with Salah and Coutinho.

LIV-EVE pretty entertaining so far. This is not Liverpool's best side but Everton has the A team out there. End-to-end so far and possession has been fairly even.

Oops- penalty given to Liverpool.

No doubt - but by the standard DCL set, he really tried to fight through it ;)
He did go down easily, but without relitigating the whole Calvert-Lewin thing, Holgate did grab and hold him.

Now Holgate shoves Firmino (?) in the back. Getting chippy.

How did Holgate not get carded for that shove or his reaction? He grabbed the ref

How was the Holgate shove not a card?? Firmino is fortunate to not get injured there.

It’s nice to have VVD in the back on corners. I only have to close one eye now!

So Holgate didn't even get shown a card?

I'm surprised Rooney has been so liberal with his thoughts to Madley, given he's been booked since minute 7

California. Duh.
For as many red cards there are in Merseyside Derbies, it seems like there's at least a couple times a game when pretty blatant cardable offenses go unpunished.

Based on what I saw, I'm not going to defend Holgate. Should have been at least a yellow.

Like several Everton players, Holgate is talented but young and inexperienced, and prone to the Really Fucking Dumb Thing now and again.

After a slow start, Liverpool seemed to really pick it up.....VVD looks like a man among children in the back....soft penalty for sure, but grab a player in the box and take your chances is the message, I guess....glad to be up 1-0.

Karius has to come collect that ball on the cross
I remember our Red friends here not liking Karius that much.

That was a good cross by Rooney, the moment I said he wasn't playing well.

Now he's coming out for Lookman. Good sub. I've wanted to see more of Lookman.

Rooney seems pissed off. I wonder if he's nursing an injury.

edit: or if his old-man legs are feeling unsteady.

All the live shots of VVD talking and directing represent the first such examples of any Liverpool defender doing so in the entirety of Klopp's time at the helm....

Yeah Madley's lost control of this one it seems

edit: as I say that, the game completely loses intensity

Jagielka turns into a world-class center forward against Liverpool it seems, how on earth was he the furthest man forward?

This is the Everton conundrum this year - Rooney has been very good passing and finishing when the ball falls his way - but the team looks so much better on attack with Sigurdsson in the middle and players with pace around him. Lookman made that play.

I'm oddly ok with it from an Everton standpoint. It sucks not to be moving on in the tournament but they were able to put together more going forward than they have recently, which is to say, more than nothing. Siggy's goal was a nice piece of business that has been sorely lacking and the game was competitive in midfield. Giving up a goal on a set piece late in the game is stupid but it's stupid and what can you do.

Does the P word the Mexican fans have chanted translate similarly into Portuguese? Because it looked like that's what he said on the slow motion replay they showed

What was the timing, though? Did Firmino say something to Holgate BEFORE Holgate pushed him over the advertising boards? Which might have at least explained (not justified) why Holgate did that? Because if it was after - I'm not condoning the use of any racist language, etc., but Holgate's push was way out of line, so maybe Firmino retaliated?

But Holgate doesn't seem to lose it until the verbal altercation. Lip readers on Twitter are claiming Firmino said: CE TA LOUCO? CE TA LOUCO? FILHO DA PUTA,” which translates as: “Are you crazy? Are you crazy? Son of a bitch!”

The Echo has a good outline on the procedure the FA follows in cases like this.

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/roberto-firmino-mason-holgate--14120511

Given that outlined procedure I can't see how Firmino would be facing any punishment in the event of conflicting statements.

The other thing to consider is that Liverpool players have been subjected to racist abuse this year - so I imagine the Club will be pressing Firmino to own up to it if he did, indeed racially abuse Holgate.

Still don't understand why it wasn't a yellow card on Holgate in the first place.

From what I saw and what I have read it occurred after the shove. Regardless, racial slurs are unacceptable. Of course, to your point, shoving a player into the stands is also unacceptable.

If Firmino said something out of line he should be punished. There is no doubt that Holgate was out of line and should have been punished. Can he be punished now?

Yes. Holgate can be suspended after the fact for violent conduct, even if there was no foul or booking during the game. Ashley Young is currently on a three-game suspension for throwing an elbow at a Southampton defender which wasn't penalized during the game.

I'm an Everton fan as y'all know and after watching it again today it should have been straight red. If I were watching a replay of some Championship match between two teams I didn't know I would have said "this guy should be sent off." There was no instigating incident that I can see (other than possibly Holgate incurring the penalty, which would be really childish on Holgate's part), it wasn't remotely related to the play ongoing at the time, and Firmino could have been badly hurt.
