"Rafa Benitez masterminds the road win" Ohhhhhhkay.

Great effort by Toon though. Going to be some lively spots in Brighton tonight.

That pass to Atsu to set up the Perez goal was absolutely sublime. Must have been 50 plus yards right on to Atsu's foot.

Big week for Newcastle with 7 points at Brighton, Hudderfield, and Reading (who were 2,3,4 at the start of the week). I think they've locked up an auto spot with that performance. Brighton looked a bit wobbly with that blown lead vs. Toon and a 3-0 smashing vs. Forest, but a date with Rotherham cures all ills and they sit in 2nd, 3 back. Huddersfield has a game in hand, but is 6 back of Brighton in 3rd. Leeds on 65, Reading on 64, and Wednesday on 62 round out the playoff spots. I think the beating Wednesday put on Norwich saturday ends their shot (9 back with 10 to go is going to be tough even in good form. Fulham has a game in hand and is 5 back of Wednesday, so still well within striking distance.

Newcastle 36 played 77 points +40
Brighton 36 played 74 points +29
Huddersfield 35 played 68 points +7
L**ds 36 played 65 points +14
Reading 36 played 64 points +3
Wednesday 36 played 62 points +13
------------------------------------------------
Fulham 35 played 57 points +19

Huddersfield and Bristol City is the BeIN game, but yeah, there should be a stream I hope. The implications are huge in this one.

The inconsistency has combined with injuries to put Wednesday in poor form...it took an unexpected late goal by Blackburn (scored by Wednesday loanee Lucas Joao) to tie Fulham and keep the Owls in 6th. Good news is Tom Lees will be back after a month and Loovens will be cleared too, so the CB pairing will be in place. Reading is going to be tough to break down though.

Listening to Burton NUFC on a radio feed. Gayle was fouled in the box, Ritchie scores the penalty, the ref takes the ball, calls off the score, announcers think it's a re-kick, ref consults other officials, fans boo, places it for a Burton free kick, away fans cheer, announcers have no idea what's happening. the players, refs, and managers all talk along the sidelines for at least 5 minutes, Rafa was apparently apoplectic. Announcers can't figure why the score was withdrawn and Burton free kick given. If it was encroachment then there would be a re-kick of the penalty. Announcers call it a farce

the studio announcer is going over the Laws of the Game for a free kicks after penalties
1. If the penalty taker feints during the approach to the kick
2. If the wrong player takes the penalty, meaning if one player is nominated but another player takes the penalty kick.
3. if there's encroachment but the penalty kick is missed.

Announcers back after halftime saying the ref says he called a foul on Gayle before the Ritchie kicked it, which makes no sense from the video in the tweet above. Gayle was the player at the top encroaching.

After today's win, if I'm counting right, Brighton can clinch promotion with 7 more points, and they've clinched at least the playoffs.

Wednesday v. Newcastle is scoreless in the first half. It would be nice to be alone in first. Come on, you Owls...

Outplayed Newcastle in the 1st half with a shit lineup. Worried our couple of great chances will go for naught- we need the three points to get back into 6th.

Shelvy hit the bar from 55 yards in added time- caught Westwood wandering. Amazing strike.

Horrifying last 5 minutes after the Shelvey goal. I literally couldn't watch that FK on the edge of the box.

Huuuuuge 3 points for Wednesday, back up into 6th, 2 ahead of Fulham, 3 back of L**ds. And the double over Newcastle is nice- Wednesday can play with anyone when the game is open, it's when teams shut up shop that we struggle.

Speaking of Shelvey- he's just too good for this league. What a player.

And speaking of teams that shut up shop, how in the hell did Norwich pour 7 past Reading today?

Shelvey is the kind of guy who shouldn't have been playing in the Prem at 21 but was pressed into it, but at 24/25 is really primed to play well. He'll definitely be a leader if we go back up

Wednesday is tricky for me, on the one hand you guys attract former Mackems like Fletcher and Wallace so that's a negative but also you have Semedo who I think is of Cape Verdean descent so I nationalistically have to like him

Semedo is Portuguese...closest of friends with Christiano Ronaldo.

Lot of Portuguese influence in Wednesday these days

Hughton is universally regarded as a delightful man, in addition to his obvious skills as a manger.

Brighton really deserve credit for their perseverance and patience. Leaving out where they were 20 years ago, they lost in the Championship semifinal in 2013, 2014, and 2016. Tony Bloom had a vision, and while it had some ups and downs, he found the right manager and built the right team, without any obvious panic or irrationality. When you see what happens at Birmingham, or Derby, or Leeds, (or people calling for Carvalhal's head at Wednesday), or countless other examples, it makes you appreciate consistency. Especially now with the FFP rules and the big $$ teams coming down blowing away the rest of the league's payroll, it's tough to remain patient. I'm glad the Seagulls did it this way.

I'm also exceedingly happy for @dirtynine. Most people on this board don't really get it, but being an overseas fan of a Championship team sucks- and it's exponentially worse for teams lower in the pyramid. Every saturday next year, He'll be able to sit down and watch his club play, live. And if Bloom and crew show the kind of focus and consistency they have so far, I think he'll get to do that for a while to come.

On that note, I think Brighton should be in decent shape next season. Obviously they'll have to upgrade in a few spots, and it's important they find the right players, but there are quite a few guys that can play at the next level. There's a bunch of mid-late 20s guys who will help them stay up and relatively competitive next season or two, and give them a chance to really invest in the academy and the youth teams. None of these guys will be stand out performers, but playing together, they really compliment each other. Newcastle had the most talent, but Brighton is an outstanding team.

Thank you, my friend. The club was ready. It happened as it was supposed to. I can't believe I'm in for a year of having the Albion on regular cable in HD every week. The biggest winner here might be my computer, which may not see one of those shady streaming sites for at least a year. Right back at you, Dummy Hoy. No rest until we're all up!

Congrats to Brighton and Newcastle and their fans. Chris Hughton is a lovely man and deserves all the praise.

Meanwhile, Norwich aren't even going to make the promotional playoffs. Which sucks.

The Championship is the football equivalent of the Gloucester greasy pole competition; I hope all your teams make it all the way at some point.

BTW, this division might be even crazier next year with Boro and Sunderland coming down and Bolton and Sheffield Utd. coming up. There will be more club pedigree in the Championship than in the bottom half of the EPL.

Really only one space open at either end, but a very interesting last two weeks in the second division. Brighton and Newcastle through, Rotherham done and Wigan all but relegated (sorry @swiftaw :(); three teams at the bottom and four teams up top all heavily involved in the last two weeks.

At the bottom we're looking at:

20. Forest- 48 points, -11GD, @QPR (19), Ipswich (16)
21. Birmingham- 47 points, -22GD(!), Huddersfield (3), @Bristol City (17)
-----------------
22. Blackburn- 45 points, -15GD, Aston Villa (12), @Brentford (9)

I think Forest is safe...they've been playing okay under Mark Warburton, and their run in features a struggling QPR side and a mediocre Ipswich side (who have been playing better). Brum has been very poor, but brought in 'Arry to keep them afloat. Huddersfield is a toss up b/c they just clinched playoffs and may rest people, but City has been on good form at home and not a bad side. Blackburn probably have tougher games, but Brum has been bad recently. In the end I don't see Blackburn getting the 2-3 points they need. If they >1 point though, that GD is suddenly in play.

At the other end, with Huddersfield clinching a top six spot, we're currently looking at

3. Huddersfield- 81 points, +3GD @Brum (21), Cardiff (13)
4. Reading- 79 points, +1GD, Wigan (23), @Burton (18)
5. Wednesday- 78 points, +15GD, @ipswich (16), Fulham (6)
6. Fulham- 76 points, +27GD, Brentford (9), @Wednesday (5)
------------------
7. Leeds- 73 points, +14GD, Norwich (8), @Wigan (23)

I'm a little too invested to make good sense of this, but Wednesday and Fulham are the form teams, while the other 3 most certainly are not. Huddersfield is in, Reading is all but assured. Wednesday and Fulham play last game of the season, which gives Leeds hope. Apparently Wednesday have never beaten a Mick McCarthy team (?!?!), but this has been a good run for breaking hoodoo (beat Warnock's Cardiff, beat Derby for first time in 17(!!)). Wednesday have 5 wins in a row, and I think they and Fulham (4 wins on the bounce) win on saturday to make it all but impossible for Leeds.

I just want to get into the playoffs because I think Wednesday have a great shot to win it. Don't want to think about it until it's clinched though- can see totally a Fulham win + a Leeds win + a Wednesday loss = squeaky bum time for old Dummy Hoy.

Any thoughts from @CSteinhardt @thehitcat @Stanley Steamer ?

Incidentally, congrats to @Warning Track Speed , who I had forgotten was a Brighton fan.

Think we might get a Germany-Austria routine out of that last Wednesday-Fulham game, if all both teams need is a point to clinch the playoff? I'm sure they'll be resting their stars regardless, unless on Saturday both lose, and Leeds win.

edit: 'pon review, that does seem rather unlikely. After beating Brighton (!) on March 18th, Leeds have gone L, L, W, D (Newcastle), L, L. And I'd bet the fightin' Heskeths would quite relish knocking them out of contention this weekend.

Yes, I've been a bit too depressed to post lately, as I had figured Leeds had done enough to make the playoffs. Not so, and I'll be shocked if they can pull that out of their arses now. They made progress this year, but that, and a dollar, still won't get them a cup of coffee next year.
Anyway, congrats as well to Brighton and Hughton for making the jump, and just slightly less so to NUFC and Benitez, for whom it seemed more of an inevitability.
As far as the rest of youse are concerned, naturally anything can, and just might, happen. Fulham are red hot right now, and could well run the table. Reading seems most solid. I think I'll pull for your lot DH, if indeed we're out. If I lived in Yorkshire, I couldn't do that, but, praise Jesus, I don't.

Monk lasted the entire year with that maniac of an owner you have. That's something to be proud of. It's a shame they petered out at the end and will likely miss the playoffs, but after the first 4 games of the season it looked like Monk wasn't going to see Halloween as manager. While I follow Norwich I did keep an eye on Leeds this year because Rob Green was their keeper, and noted they recovered quite nicely.
