This year's junior tournament kicked off today in Toronto and Montreal. Sweden pasted Denmark 6-1, the US made it past Latvia 4-1, Czechs and Finns are underway, and Canada wraps up the first day at 8 ET, squaring off with their nemesis, the Russians.

The rested US team in a tight one vs Slovakia, who was completely dominated by Canada last night. I say this every year, but the NHL Network's coverage is so terrible for the tournament overall...they are just running TSN's feed, but for some reason won't show half the games. I would have loved to watch Sweden play the Swiss earlier, vs watching NHL on the fly for the 19th time of the day.

Big test for the US today at 3:30 vs Russia. It was nice to draw two cupcakes early, but today's game, and NYE against Canada and we will see how good these kids are. Canada to me looks too dominant, but to go into the next round 3-1 would be a nice sign.

US playing a real solid game so far...a bit unlucky to come out of the first period tied 1-1- they totally carried the play basically the entire 20 minutes. Troy Terry scores on a pretty redirect to make it 3-1. The score still much closer than the actual flow of the game.

3-2 win for USA. Had no idea this was on....got it on just in time for the closing ceremony. Sounds like it was a great game.

It was a great game, and a solid win. As Mentioned, I think the US carried the game, particularly 5-5. Parsons wasn't tested a ton, but made several very big saves. It gives me a bit more confidence heading into tomorrow vs Canada. If Keller, Thompson and Co continue to play big up front, I think it should be a great game.

Wow, great start here for the US, as they connect on early PP goals by White and Greenway, 2-0 US just six minutes in.

Love watching this with my kids, until the commercials where it's either blood thinners causing strokes, heroin addicts hotline, or st Jude kids with cancer...pretty sure those are the only three they are going with

This might be the first matching too many men call I've ever seen.

I tried to watch Harvard play RPI on NESN last night, and every add was about suing someone for some medical malpractice. I couldn't last past the first period

Watched most of this USA/CA game. Certainly a more compelling event than that miserable football game this afternoon.

McAvoy. Not sure what to think of him. He had the reputation as an aggressive offensive player, but he hasn't been that at BU this year, and I don't see it in this tournament. At the same time he is clearly the USA's best overall defenseman, and leading the team.

Lindgren really does stand out on defense. He is smart, well positioned, and makes a ton of plays, and probably should get a star today for his play when the US was on the penalty kill much of the second period.

Lauzon barely plays, so hard to judge

It really feels like a starless tournament this year. Obviously this is somewhat true as the guys who should be the best players in this tournament are not here. (McDavid, NaMatthers)

And as I finish typing this Lindgren is named player of game

One more edit re: the commercials. OMG, they just ran a reverse mortgage commercial with someone doing a fake Morgan Freeman voice, ARGH that is so disgusting

I had to give up on the Harvard/ RPI, as it felt like they put the camera on storrow drive. Maybe it was just me, but I couldn't even see the shots on net from that center ice cam.

As far as starless tourney goes, really the tournament hasn't even begun yet. A couple of US forwards are literally men amongst boys- Thompson and Keller I think are the best two on the ice. They have completely dominated 5-5 play though all four games thus far. Just really really impressive.

Keller is very good, and he has some star in him.

Thompson may be dominating play, but he is at 1 G and 2 assists through 3 games, and even if he turns out to be one of the best players in this tourney, he is not a "star " kid, he was a end of the first round draft pick from a non glamour program.

Nylander has the best numbers in the tourney, and he is somewhat a star.

But you have No McDavid, Matthers, Laine, arguably the 3 best players in the world eligible to be in the tourney. No Brendan Patrick the projected top pick in 2017. No Vilardi, Lilegtren, Vesalanian.

The top picks there are Strome and Dubois the 3rd pick in the last 2 drafts. Strome has big numbers, but largely because everyone on Canada got fat in the Latvia game.

At least we have Rasmus Dahlin the 16 year old sensation from Sweden who is already a wow level talent

The US put out their worst effort of the tourney thus far, but got some great goaltending by Parsons to hang on and survive the Swiss 3-2. Next up will be Russia on Wednesday, with the winner to play for the gold.

Bump for the semis against Russia right now for those lucky souls that can actually watch this. Currently 0-0 about 7 minutes into the 1st.

Shit-tough rebound by Parsons there, 2-1 Russia early in the second. US played a solid first period, but were somewhat fortunate to get out of the period tied with a fluky goal late.

Chabot has been a revelation for me this tournament. The guy is everywhere and an incredible skater.

Agreed, he looks good.

I haven't been too impressed with the Swedes here, other than Sandstrom in net. They were supposedly the tournament favorites.

I prefer Canada's anthem, their flag, their politics, and their choice of obsessive sport.

That said, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you Canada.

It will be interesting to see if Canada goes back to Ingram after getting the quick yank last night, or stick with Carter Hart, who played really well in relief. Either way, the US definitely has the edge in goal.

Canada got away with one (dumped a guy right in front of the ref), and it helped lead to a goal.

Going to be a great game but annoying start

That's a dubious call. Pretty clearly going to be an uphill battle with the officials

USA looks like the better squad. If we can settle down and pot one soon, very winnable game.
