NY Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers were used and abused
It's easy to see how the NYJs could be rejected out of hand.

Nice to see tough guy Tomlin spurned as well. They've lost Jarvis Jones and Lawrence Timmons from their starting LB corps (leaving a brittle Shazier and ancient Harrison); Cupcakes would've been a nice and needed fit there. Steelers' defensive backfield and now linebacker corps need a re-build.

Fantastic. Now all that's really left is to resolve the Butler situation, and that's one of the few that has no real potential to have a huge downside.

I'll believe that the JimmyG saga is over Week 1 at 1PM

I still feel he will change teams...

So, we got Hightower for 7M less guaranteed than the Browns gave Collins.

Outstanding.

This makes me very happy. A very reasonable contract for the Patriots, Dont'a gets paid and now onto The Butler Watch.

May Dont'a play in LII and not need to make any game-saving plays in a comfortable victory.

Ambassadors, they bring me cupcakes

Sideline trippers ask me not to go

None were level on my mind

No reason not to say no

Solidified as an "A" offseason. Butler staying = A+, but I don't see any personnel-related moves that can knock it below an A.

Not even taking into account what happens at the draft, including potential return in any Jimmy G or Butler deal.

Wow what a great deal. Ends when he's 31.

What's the updated cap situation?
Or 30, probably. Initial numbers look like it's probably a 2-year deal with 2 team options in the 10 mil range in 2019 and 2020. Can't ask for better than that.

So crazy that he got so much less than Collins and Jones and is the better player
I can't believe this. Granted, Cleveland probably needs to over pay keep Collins, but I still can't believe it. Outstanding offseason.

No reason to get excited

The linebacker kindly spoke

There are many here among us

Who feel the Jets are but a joke

Once again I think the Pats have proven that their approach to free agency is spot on. Never any need to use the franchise tag.

I think one does have to note that it works if you are a perpetual Super Bowl contender---I don't think it's quite the same if you are a undesireable location/situation for the player.

That may be true, but that's only if the Pats feel like getting rid of him for picks. It isn't a situation that actually requires any action at all on their part between now and the season.

Great outcome. Keep High for two more years as a key piece then have the option to get rid when he (very very likely) starts breaking down and/or slowing down.

If Brady keeps playing at a high level, this could be the best Pats team since 2007.

Ahh, yes! That makes the Butler roller coaster so much easier.

Bill goes with the "if you love something set it free" method and it pays off!

They know BB doesn't use InstaFace, of course.
BB can use me any way and anytime he wants, especially if it lands Dont'a at $45M over 4 yrs with half guaranteed.

edit: wow, I said that without seeing the last page. Guess that was pretty close to the actual numbers, but even a slight overestimate. Holy shit, I wouldn't want to be the floor salesman at the dealership the next time BB is looking to buy a car.

Apparently the Jets sang happy birthday, bought him cupcakes, and sent Jets gear to his mom... so it's probably in the bag

http://www.espn.com/blog/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4801823/jets-showered-donta-hightower-with-birthday-cheer-during-visit?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

This is going to be pretty funny when he ends up back in NE.

And if he somehow does end up on the Jets, it's going to be LOL Jets all over again. But hey, congrats again on Revis
Yep.

The latter is true, but given, among other things, the Pats perennial contender status, its as though they have reached some sort of self-sustaining process that no other team has. Super Bowl champs, perennial contender, salary cap comfort, not a lot of dead money on the horizon, not an old team, no franchise-tagging antagonism, allow a star player to find out about his own market. Guys might get hurt or just suck, but from a front-office, roster-building, paper and off season approach (the things they can control), the team is nearly untethered from the conventional wisdom of the NFL.

To other teams, it's like a combination of the death star becoming operational and Skynet becoming self-aware.

The Patriots seem to know what the market is for these players better than most teams.

I'm as happy about this as any other signing this off-season.

Donta is set for life and can come back and hopefully captain the defense of another SB champion.
