This is my opinion, too. Patriots aren't part of BLESTO / National, which from my understanding is the basis for the initial lists for most teams, as well as the Kipers of the world.
Some more info on what BLESTO is and how it works.

If anyone's interested in who uses what:

As of the 2015 season, eighteen franchises participate in The National (Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tennessee Titans), with eight served by BLESTO (Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Washington Redskins). Each of the six non-affiliated teams (Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and Oakland Raiders) relies on its in-house scouting staffs
Mildly amusing that BLESTO is an acronym for "Bears, Lions, Eagles, Steelers Talent Organization" but the Eagles use The National nowadays.

Before I purchase the ITP draft guide, let me ask the experts here.

Why not Mixon?

With Burkhead on board, he will be a better fit than Cook/McC, neither of whom will be available when NE picks with a (possible) late first or second.

P.S. Everything I've read/heard so far points to his past incident as a one-time deal. I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt on being truly remorseful about it.

Not worth it in my eyes. Others may disagree. I like being able to root for guys on my hometown team.

Reiss was on ESPN radio last year discussing the Michael Floyd signing. He said the Pats pretty much have an unofficial policy at this point. They're willing to take chances on guys with questionable backgrounds as long as it's not related to domestic violence or guns.

I don't really want Mixon on my team either, but I think he's going to be a hell of RB.

It's pretty official at this point: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/patriots/the_blitz/2016/10/jonathan_kraft_there_literally_is_no_gray_area_for_pats_when_it

Can what Mixon did get defined as domestic violence?
I think domestic violence is a blanket misnomer for violence against women. I don't know that there's anything inherently better or worse about hitting a random woman over one with whom you're in a relationship.

Agreed. Splitting a rotten pea there.

Going back to Mixon as a prospect, Raiders could be a good spot with only Taiwan Jones, DeAndrew Washington, and Jalen Richard on the depth chart right now.

Question - I read that BB and company have been making the rounds for Pro Days including at Vanderbilt. They are seemingly still scouting first round talent.
Is this mostly just due diligence to be prepared for anything or are the Pats planning on getting a first round pick?

The staff always goes almost everywhere. Even if they don't end up picking any of the players, the Patriots will face them and they may want them several years from now. It's almost more noteworthy when they aren't at a pro day. Sometimes which position coach they send to which school can be instructive, but usually it's just about having a body there.

Thanks. That is what I thought; I just didn't know if there was an expectation of them trading back into the first round (Butler or Jimmy G).

They also need to develop a sense of the market for each position, and those guys are going to be a big part of that.

This is where I am also but what are the chances at this point? Less than 5% I say.

Someone like Jourdan Lewis (Michigan) could fit the bill as a 2nd round corner. That means Gilmore/Rowe with lots of safety help, no?
Cross posting from the Butler thread because I think it fits better here.
I didn't think Lewis was great for the Pats before, but he got charged with domestic violence two days ago. He will probably be available later than that. To me he's a straight line speed CB who isn't great reading or reacting to routes. What do you like about him?

This has probably been noted in the past, but interesting that the Pats narrow their draft board to ~75 players. Compared to ~175 for the Ravens.

I don't know whether RB is a need anymore since we've signed so many of them but I bet BB loves James Conner.

You also cannot get into bar fights or hit women.

If I'm an agent and the rules permit and I have a draftee I think is at risk, I put him under Dez Bryant style monitoring Combine week and 10 days before the draft.

I'm not so sure. What Mixon did was terrible, but when I think of representative cases of domestic violence it's usually cases where men use their size and strength to dominate and control women on an ongoing basis. The physical abuse is bad, but the stripping away of personal agency seems like the major source of injury.

True, but random violence has its own psychic toll different from that perpetrated by someone the victim knows. It's all bad.

Local radio here in JAX talking up a CLE-JAX swap of 4 for 12+ so CLE can go get Trubisky.
If that happens will it be the most Browns thing ever?

I wonder if in 2020 that rules against pot is negotiated out of the CBA. By that time half the country may have legalized it.

Be interesting to study the "Pot Smoking Draft fall Penalty" and if its lessened as the views of the country has changed.

Not sure how NFL front offices look at it, but were it me, I'd be much more worried about his decision making and impulse control than the pot itself. Pot is certainly and obviously becoming more accepted, but if the player knows he is going to be tested, if he tests positive it means trouble - financially and going forward to put him in the program and limit his ability to use during his career - and he still can't resist using or possess the slightest of judgment to not use leading up to the combine? I'd be a bit worried about what else might happen down the road. I'm sure most of these people know a good amount of players use marijuana and it doesn't concern them all that much. But when a guy is specifically given instructions for a small window of time and can't follow them, it speaks to something I think coaches and front offices don't like and can be a tie breaker if nothing else when their name pops up on the draft board.

Unnamed first-round prospect faces sexual assault allegation in Cleveland.
A bizarre story has emerged in Cleveland only two days before the draft.

Via WOIO-TV, a woman has accused an unnamed NFL prospect of sexual assault. The player is expected to be selected in round one. WOIO-TV has decided not to name the prospect, pending the issuance of a police report. WOIO-TV also has emphasized that the player has not yet been charged with a crime.
Here’s where it gets weirder. The story quotes the lawyer for the unnamed player, but still doesn’t name the player. Kevin Spellacy represents the unnamed player, and Spellacy calls the allegation “ludicrous and ridiculous.”

“In my opinion this young lady is an opportunist and it’s actually despicable,” Spellacy said.

Spellacy told WOIO that the unnamed player was never alone with the alleged victim at the Westin Hotel in Cleveland, the site of the alleged incident. Spellacy also said that the unnamed player has three witnesses who claim the unnamed player did nothing wrong. Spellacy said he’s willing to make the player available for an interview with police immediately after the draft.

So he listened to Warren Sapp?

I hope this is unfounded for both parties sake.

Wouldnt it be a pisser if it was Trubisky. Isnt he a Cleveland kid?

Here's some FWIW info. From sources pretty close to a specific player in this draft (you guys can probably guess), word is Cleveland wants to trade up from 12 to 5 to take Watson. When I asked what about Trubisky, I was told they think he'll be gone by 5 and they don't want to use the 1 on a QB. So they would take Garrett, watch MT get drafted soon after and trade up to get Watson, switching with the Titans. I'd assume if MT is available at 5, he'd be their guy, but they don't think he will be.

Peter King had this to say in his MMQB mock:

6. CLEVELAND (from N.Y. Jets)
Browns trade 12th, 33rd and 181st picks for No. 6 overall.
Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
Could divide the building, but owner hired DePodesta to make ballsy calls like this.

So basically the same thought at PiMB. Since when does Ballsy mean dumb?

It's amazing how teams pay so much year after year for prospect QBs, even when the ratings of the QBs vary so widely.

There is no question that if you get it right there is value in such a trade---but teams do it every year, and there are not top QB prospects every year.
