Ah, it's that time again. Getting ahead of the game, here's a primer on PS eligibility rules and players. Please read before asking/repeating basic questions:

https://www.patsfans.com/salary-cap/2017/05/02/listing-the-2017-patriots-who-are-eligible-to-be-placed-on-the-practice-squad/

Basics:
  • PS squad can be built starting at 1 PM, September 3rd
  • Anywhere from 6 to 10 players can be on at any given time
  • The player must first clear waivers before getting placed on the PS
Rules:
  1. A player who has not accrued a season of NFL experience is eligible for the practice squad. (e.g. a rookie).
  2. A free agent who was active (46-man game-day roster) for fewer than nine games during their accrued season(s) is eligible for the practice squad (e.g. Woodrow Hamilton).
  3. A player cannot be on a practice squad for a third season unless his team has a full 53-man roster.

Pats cut a few guys today. These guys will clear waivers around cut down deadline tomorrow, likely making it harder for them to be claimed. Do we think that makes them more likely practice squad candidates since they can commit to it as soon as eligible?

Would it make it harder? The impression I have is that after the third game, front offices have been war gaming this weekend 24-7. If a guy is released today and you want him, doesn't that incentivize getting your roster down sooner than later and then claiming him?

Hope somebody like Carr appreciates the system he can learn from in NE (as well as success had by Edelman, Welker, even Troy Brown) and decides to accept a spot on the PS, even if he is cut today.

Same with Hollister but not so much with Foster who has already spent a year with the Pats (although still eligible.)

Anecdotally, heard yesterday that paywise, the roster minimum is like 3 to 4 times PS, like 440 to 110, or something like that.

That's a big difference.

Yup, practice squad minimum is $7,200 / week or $122,400 for a full season. Teams can go above that but any amount above counts against the cap. They don't get any playoff shares but they do get their weekly rate for however long the team is around.

Today's waiver claim deadline is 1 PM EST today. I'll be glued to the Twitter feeds...

...until I can't stay awake anymore. Hope to see at least a couple of Carr, Lucien, Karras, Foster, and DJ Killings make it to the Pats PS.

The numbers boggle my mind. 32 teams, with each one cutting up to 37 guys. That's around 1,100 players out of work. 320 of those will find their way onto someone's taxi squad. Over 700 will have no job at all. A few may go to Canada. What happens to the rest of them, especially the ones who left college early?

Quite a few will end up getting signed to other teams now (with the same number of other guys getting cut). But a few hundred will end up replacing guys who go on injured reserve.

Here
Carr makes me sad. With Snead suspended, I wonder if we see instant impact.

As of 1:40 ET, believe that's 7 on the PS so far: Bates, Foster, Grissom, C.Hollister, D.Jones, Karras, and Travis.

Four others reverting to IR: Augusta, Lucien, Hamilton, and Killings.

Anyone I've missed?

"Four others reverting to IR: Augusta, Lucien, Hamilton, and Killings."

It would not likely come into play, but are these four eligible for DTR if there was a need later in the season?

As disappointed as I am about Kenny Moore, I have to say I'm thrilled/surprised that no one put in a claim on DJ Foster. Really good depth in case any of the following go down:

Dion. Rex. James White. Even Amendola.

Edit Can't believe jets didn't claim him.

I believe they would be. Under the old rules you had to designate the player at the time of the injury, but under the current rules you can designate them when they are ready to return, so theoretically we could see two of them later. Killings and Augusta strike me as players who need a year in an NFL strength program, but either Hamilton or Lucien might be ready to contribute.

So why wouldn't Edelman be similarly available? Not that I was ever expecting him to come back, but I believe someone said earlier that he was specifically not allowed to return. Is it that he didn't do either of make the 53 or clear waivers?

Exactly what I was thinking regarding Hamilton and Lucien.

Pretty sure they had to be put on IR today or later to be eligible. I guess they could have waited with Edelman, but would have had to cut an additional player yesterday.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed nine players to the practice squad: LB Trevor Bates, OL James Ferentz, RB D.J. Foster, DL Geneo Grissom, WR Cody Hollister, DB David Jones, OL Ted Karras, DL Darius Kilgo and DB Damarius Travis. All of those players were with the team for training camp.
