Saw Brad Faxon on, gasp, Fox News this AM being interviewed about the round.

His takeaways:

  • Tiger was out there with DJ on most driving holes. Hit most fairways. Some rough spots, but short game was very good.
  • Brad and Trump, who played from the blue tees, paired against DJ and Tiger, who played from the Championship tees. VERY difficult course designed by Jack Nicklaus.
  • Trump drives 240-250 with a natural draw, and apparently is a single digit handicapper - but was given 4 strokes on each 9. Round was tied on 18 and came down to Brad's final putt after DJ and Tiger had missed their birdie attempts. Brad's birdie putt came to rest at cup's edge. Tied. No talk of politics. News of the Egyptian mosque bombing came on the 10th hole.
  • Brad has also talked to Ricky Fowler, who played a few rounds with Tiger a couple of weeks ago. Ricky reported great look and swing.
  • Tiger's smile is back.

I caught some of Tiger’s press conference this morning...

He says he is finally pain free, though admits to being stiff. Happy to get out of bed and use a golf club to play golf instead of using it as a crutch. Back is fused, surgeon has given him the green light to let it rip, but he’s been (understandably) hesitant, first 9-iron he hit went like 80 yards. Slowly built it up from there. Hasn’t hit big cuts/draws or gouged it out of the rough yet, but those shots aren’t needed at this course. Was thrilled to be able to play practice rounds with Rickie, JT, Rory, etc. No expectations for this week or this season. Hopes to get through 4 rounds, and then go from there. Has to figure out what he can and can’t do with his body. He’s sort of in uncharted waters- the average age of people who had the surgery he had is 58. Not much of track record for a 41 year old professional athlete returning from that surgery.

He seems to be in a better place and have a better game plan than he did year ago, but we’ll see later on this week.

One of the best things Tiger did was come to the realization he may never compete as a world class golfer again. Once he admitted that to himself, and to the public, he's started to rebuild himself. It was his best path, in my opinion.

Reports from the Bahamas today are that Tiger shot -3 or -4 in the pro-am today, I don’t think they really keep score or he doesn’t always hole out. He apparently hit 15 of 16 fairways, which might be more surprising than the reports of him bombing it. Made an eagle on a 340 yard driveable par 4. Some good shots, some bad shots overall was the general theme.

Excited to see him play tomorrow.

Sorry, not trying to bust balls just wondering on the source if that was legit, since pretty much no courses only have two par 3s. Trust me, I’m excited as anyone that he is looking good so cheers to the news he only missed one, whatever the details ended up being. I hope this isn’t another cock tease.

Stress free par on 1 for Tiger. Casual 323 yard drive then a 100 yard wedge to 15 feet, easy 2 putt for par.

We’re off and running.

Tiger with a par on 1 after a huge drive that just stayed on the fairway. I don't know if he's nervous or in total competition mode but his body language is making me slightly nervous. I'm probably reading too much into it but something in his face doesn't seem quite right.

Also, dude is built like a brick shithouse. Amazing how he can maintain that body through all the surgeries and pill issues.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Monster drive and then a 260 yard two iron into the green on the par 5 third hole. Fuck me for getting invested in this.

Yeah I’m all in. That 2 iron with the walk down after it was vintage Tiger. I might be a sucker but I don’t care. Life’s too short to be a pessimist.

Yep. Chunked a chip then rolled in a long putt to save par.

That 2-iron was awesome. The quick walk and “be good.” Christ I’ve missed him.

Nice mid/long birdie putt at 8, followed by striping it perfectly off tee at par 5 9th. This is fun.

Ugly around the green at 9. Leaves chip short, blows putt by and can’t make the comebacker. First real sign of rust.

Good up and down on 12, birdies follow on 13 and 14. -4.

Edit: Then first poor drive of the day losing one right on 15. Reloads on the tee. Not sure if it is a provisional.

MIssed it all. Fucking work. Watching some highlights. Tight lies chips suck for everyone, but I like the rest of what I’m seeing. Much more aggressive swing than it looked in practice rounds. Good to see. Hope he can stay healthy.

Swing seems a bit more rotational at the point of contact. I like it, he’s getting crazy power from his hips. Looks good.

Yep, these last two days of hot tub time machine back to 2005 have gotten me fully invested. I need one more Sunday at Augusta, Tiger, just one more.

Spieth, JT, Rickie, DJ, etc. should be on their knees thanking Tiger for his on and off hiatus for the last 8 years. When Tiger is on those guys aren't sniffing a win...no one is.

Am I absolutely loving the way Tiger looks and the fact that he's actually playing and appears healthy? Why yes, YES I AM.

2017 golf year was incredible, one of the most fun years to follow the sport. There are so many great young talents and personalities. And if Tiger competes in 2018, it could really be something.

Final pairing on Sunday of Spieth/Tiger would be .... well.... i don't have a word for it right now.
