I dont think he signed here to play special teams, but we will see. Hope Im wrong, last year's backfield with Burkhead in the Bolden role would be a pretty nice depth upgrade on offense (special teams, dont know enough to say). Like the signing either way, I think Burkhead might be an upgrade over Blount too.

Also possible they use Gaffney (or someone else) as a power back with a more limited gameday role.

I know Burkhead isnt the banger the Pats have almost always had, but when White/Lewis/Blount were all healthy last year the carries were being split up pretty good. Plan A might not be to have a ~300 carry guy this season.

This has much more of a chance of working out like Dillon and Develin than Chad Johnson and Jonathan Fanene. 5.2 YPC in college in a major conference and 4.3 in the NFL, mostly this year behind a bad offensive line and passing game chops to boot. The guy can flat-out play and that's why the Pats are the Pats and the Bengals are the Bengals.

at 210 lbs, I agree they'll want more of a bruiser goal-line back on the roster as well. Doesn't mean Blount isn't back, just that their leverage has improved as well as their talent.

Insert "we have all the white guys" joke here.
I wonder if white players are the market inefficiency, or players who don't have good measurables in glamour stats like the 40 yard dash even if they excel in other ways?

Burkhead’s official 40-yard dash time was 4.73 seconds, which ranked 25th among the 33 running backs and fullbacks who ran at the combine. ...

The fact the former Husker running back tested near the top at his position in most of the other drills could help make up for not running the 40 time he'd hoped for.

Measuring in at 5-foot-10 and 214 pounds, Burkhead ranked second among running backs in three categories: vertical leap (39 inches), broad jump (10 feet, 5 inches) and 20-yard shuttle run ( 4.09 ).

He also was fourth at his position in the cone drill ( 6.85) and fifth in the 60-yard shuttle run ( 11.51).

I thought this thread just established that trading players not on your roster for draft picks was the new market inefficiency.

Aren't the Pats supposed to be smitten with cone drill results? That article notes, "He also was fourth at his position in the cone drill."

Love what Blount has done here but wouldn't be heartbroken to see him slow down somewhere else. He's 30, and that moment can come quick for big backs like him.

I think players that don't have good measurables in glamour stats who LOVE to play football and were leaders on their respective teams have been a market inefficiency the Patriots have taken advantage of for years. Brady, Bruschi, Edelman, etc. all would fall in that category I would think.

He is also a smart young man.
From his wiki:
He graduated from Nebraska in three-and-a-half years with bachelor's degree in history. He earned repeated scholar-athlete awards throughout his career, including first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2011 and 2012, and recognition as one of 15 National Football Foundation Scholar Athletes in 2012.

I couldn't pay attention to any of the highlights as I was too distracted by the amazing soundtrack. Which is exactly the kind of soundtrack I should have expected out of a Rex Burkhead highlight video.

Yeah, and I feel like he already slowed down late this season, as his Dec/Jan/SB stats were down from his impressive earlier season numbers.

Yeah, I feel like even if they bring him back, they should add a younger guy to compete. Then again, I would have said the same thing last year.
