So it's Khabib vs Iaquinta now but since Al missed weight for 155 by 0.2lb, if he wins he gets no belt. Khabib wins, he gets the belt.

I honestly assumed after the Floyd fight that Conor was never coming back to MMA but now that he's going to get sued into absolute fucking oblivion, he's going to have to make more money.

Even if they let him back in, he’s going to have to fight someone legit to get a payday and I think anyone legit will stretch him. He can’t just bounce around weight classes and reach for opponents. Once he takes an L against a legit opponent the bravado and fascination will be over.

You say that but he took an L against Nate Diaz and nothing happened to his shine.

Nate had a bunch of weight on him and it was last minute. It was an excusable loss. If Khabib or Holloway beats him, there’s no way out.

UFC is over. It will never regain the mainstream appeal it held just a couple years ago. I am on the casual side of the fandom and I have absolutely no interest outside of a couple mega fights, and even that is waning.

I’ll watch Stipe vs Cormier, Conor vs Khabib and JJ vs Brock/Stipe/Cormier

Sounds like White will make Iaquinta champ if he wins regardless of what the NY commission says. Good for Al.

Hope he can pull the upset.

I don’t understand what Dana is saying though. Does the athletic commission really give a shit about belts? When they do interim title fights do they have to okay it with whatever states athletic commission the ppv is being held in?

I have gone from a casual viewer five years ago to a pretty hardcore fan, but sometimes I feel like common sense gets thrown out the window when Dana makes decisions.

For example, on the video package at the press conference it literally said the winner of Rivera Moraes fight would get a title shot. Then the reporter asks Dana and he goes “I don’t think it said that...I don’t know if that will happen”

I don't know what authority athletic commissions have on such matters. I'm guessing White wants to strip CM no matter who wins, so if Iaquinta pulls off the upset he's either going to be the outright champ or the belt will be vacant and Iaquinta will be the #1 ranked guy who fights for it again soon. Different situation, but maybe a little like Romero after he beat Rockhold.

Of the five guys who were at some point named to fight Khabib, I think Iaquinta is the second-toughest matchup behind Ferguson. Holloway was going to have a killer weight cut, and Pettis and Felder are stand-up guys who Khabib would drag and hold down and pound. Iaquinta has solid wrestling so he should be better at getting up quickly after takedowns.

Agreed. Iaquinta is so tough and hits hard. Of course it's likely Khabib bear fucks him though the canvas, but he has a chance.

I'm sick of seeing Lauzon get the shit kicked out of him. He's be really smart to retire

Yeah, really impressed by Rose. Just keeps getting better.

Sad my girl lost though.

It was probably the best woman’s mma fight (from a skill level) that I’ve ever watched. Both girls were really sharp tonight.

JJ is really good but drops her right when she jabs and was open for right hooks all night. She also looks straight down every time Rose flurries.

I don’t get how Khabib didn’t lock in those rear naked chokes. It looked like he had 3-4 locked in and then Al got out... somehow?

It’s not that easy to finish that choke with the gloves. Especially if the guy is handfighting and knows how to turn. If you remember Maia who is the best at it, he would often end up face cranking or choking thru the jaw. He also went palm to palm.

A lot of times when people get rear naked choked in UFC they are giving up. That’s something that is almost never said by the commentators.

I just didn’t see what Al did to shake them. He seemed...slippery?

Khabib better keep his chin down if he ever fights Conor. Does he always do that?

He’s always bad but more careful

When someone tries to choke you, the hand is pointing the was you have to go. ..., video will be better. Consider the mma gloves too as you watch this

I highly doubt Khabib fucks around to the extent he did tonight while facing Conor...but we both know there is no chance in hell CM ever signs on to a fight with him anyway. Khabib just isn't a big enough draw to ever force that.

Dana's comment about Brock potentially being an option to face the winner of Stipe/DC was flat out funny imo. I mean, is there really any chance he even makes it out of the first at 40yo if it's Stipe?

JJ’s other mistake was with her feinting. Rose clearly wasn’t reacting to them, and JJ left her feints too differentiated from her actual punches Rose was able to easily tell what was what and stay in the pocket. She’d also bring her feints back slower, just as she was putting them out slower, and that allowed Rose to close the gap and land on her.

It’s especially bizarre because, dropping the right aside, JJ has an amazing, long and sharp jab that she should’ve used to keep Rose back and of her.

UFC is over.
The Rose v. JJ fight and the Zabit v. psycho zombie dude fight last night are prime examples of why you are wrong. UFC has the best farm system for female fighters and has the ability to keep finding really amazing international fighters that other organizations can't seem to match. As long as they keep this up and remain the top destination for highly credentialed American combat sports participants, they will be just fine.

As for Khabib, he has been hitable in several fights, but hasn't really shown much damage after taking great shots in any of those fights. In a battle between Mystic Mac and Khabib's granite chin I take the guy with the funny hat. I think Khabib's fight with Connor goes something like this:

I was really looking forward to reading your analysis of this fight, I came in here tonight to ask you what you thought. Thanks for doing this.

I didn’t mean to downplay Rose’s performance. It was more about her brilliance than JJ’s mistakes. She’s masterful at closing space and accurate punching. She was preternaturally calm, which I think helped her come round 5 when JJ was a little gassed from bouncing around so much.

MMA Hour had Pettis, Felder, Iaquinta and Holloway. Pettis said after he was told the Chiesa fight was off, he started to rehydrate Thursday night, but then he was told he was should make weight, and then he was told he was off again, then back on again. So he had started rehydrating twice, then went back to the cut Friday morning. Friday morning he got down to 155.4 when he was told he was off the card. He said there wasn't a contract and his people didn't get far along in negotiations outside of them asking him to get down to 155.

It seems like Pettis and Felder were offered before Iaquinta since the former two are teammates and just did a whole camp together, and weren't going to fight each other. So one would have fought Khabib and the other would fight Iaquinta.

Khabib is hilarious. Iaquinta said when Khabib was on top of him near his corner, that Khabib was talking to Matt Serra, complimenting Matt Serra's coaching, say "Yes, Matt, that's good, good advice."

On MMA hour today, Danvers's own Kayla Harrison, a two-time olympic gold medalist in judo, announced her first pro fight on June 21 in PFL. She said she's walking around at 160, down from her 171 judo weight because "I'm not eating 6000 calories a day like I did for judo". She said the fight will b 145, but PFL doesn't have a women's 145 division. When pressed by Ariel Helwani, she said she could fight at a higher catch weight. She's never had an MMA weight cut but she said her camp says it shouldn't be a problem. She said two fighters have signed and then backed out of fighting here so there's no opponent set yet.

I hadn't heard about her, but knew immediately that she had to have been connected to the Pedro's.

So Mir looked a little heavy and unbalanced, no? Fedor hit him once as Frank was falling into him and that was it.

Yowzers, what a KO for Machida. Tough to see Belfort go down like that.

Belfort hanging them up. Long time coming. end of an era, anyone else left who fought in the 90s?

I think Jacare has it, and in Brazil I think it’s a no brained.

Very impressive because he was on ice skates at the end of round 2.

Yikes, Pennington said she was done after round 4 but her corner talked her out if it and she went out for the 5th. Her nose is broken and spurting blood.

Oh this got super ugly in the finish. So much blood. I hope Pennington gets a new team, you can't send a fighter back out there if their head isn't in it, especially against a killer like Nunes.
