I want
Luis Perez of Texas A&M-Commerce
He worked out at A&M when we met with Manziel twice. Thick smoke screen.
(I don't really know enough about him to have a real opinion, but he threw a good looking ball).
He would give Mookie a bowling partner.

Bears have a decent chance to go 6-10. Vegas puts them at 6.5 wins (over -130 / under +110). That gets them in the #9-#12 range in the first round and #41-45 range in the second.

So, BB essentially this year's #43 second-rounder for a similar spot in 2019 + 3rd rounder in 2019 + #178 this year.
Yeah, so let’s evaluate it like this.

What did the Patriots end up giving up? Two things.

1) Overall 63 pick. Worth 276 points on the chart.

2) The Delta of the value of the 43d pick and the Dawson pick. Worth 130 points on the chart.

So, 416 points in value.

What did they get?

1) Pick 178, That’s 20 points.

2) Bears 2019 second. Let’s conservatively put that at 2(15). That’s 430 points.

3) Lions 2019 third. Let’s conservatively put that at 3(22). That’s 160 points.

That’s 610 points, being very conservative. It will probably be closer to 700 points. I don’t know how to discount for the one year postponement.

Those who are taking issue with this draft are messing around, right? It's not like this team has won double-digit games every season since 2003. Not like the capital hasn't been built long term for the team, not like Langi/Rivers/Hightower are going to be there to come back next year.

We are spoiled.

I thought the rule of thumb was a roughly 1 round discount factor.

ie a '18 3nd rounder is worth a '19 2nd rounder +/- for position in the round.

so using your #s 416 in '18 draft value = about the 16th pick in the '18 2nd round= a 1st round pick 'in '19

now the #16 pick in the first round is valued at 1000 draft point, the Pats received estimated draft value (lets say 650) or about the value of the #28 pick in the 1st round.

This is a typical Pats draft.
BB has made a living acquiring picks in future years when he sees value.
*my only complaint was if he wanted a QB at top of round 4 he seemed to have miscalculated.
The more realistic explanation is that BB saw much more value trading back and then out of the round.

Bless you Jon Gruden. You may have gotten a first rounder in the fifth. A beast who brings pressure up the middle. That’s value.

If BB/JM don't like Falk, people ok with going down another 8 picks and getting Kiser

The Seahawks must have been jealous that the Pats were going to have twins play for the same team in a regular season game for the first time since 1926, so they had to go and do it too.

Neg:
Shows some stiffness in his game, struggles to redirect and really doesn’t cover a lot of area on the field. Exploited in man-coverage situations.

Perfect Pats LB!

  • Diagnose to reaction time is average. Play lacks knee bend and is unable to gain good ground with lateral slide steps when scraping. Forced to open hips and run to the gap rather than slide. Struggles to disengage quickly from angle blocks on his edge. Build-up speed limits his sideline to sideline range. Below average agility to unlock tackle opportunities at challenging angles. Change of direction is labored. Has missed games in three straight seasons including an ACL tear in 2015. Stiff in his drops and open field coverage on passing downs

Slow, bad in coverage LB. Pats needed another one of those. Injury prone as well. It's all a dice roll at this point, but it would be nice to have a little speed.

New England selects Purdue LB Ja'whaun Bentley. His 91.2 overall grade ranked second among draft-eligible LBs in 2017

So much for getting faster and more athletic. Here;s a scouting report:
First and foremost, Ja’Whaun Bentley is a bull of a player. Meaning, at 260 lbs he is a heavy set player that isn’t afraid to throw his weight around at the line of scrimmage. In Mobile, at the Senior Bowl, Bentley played very well on the edge with his ability to engage and shed offensive lineman. At Purdue, he played more inside and used that strength to fill running lanes. Honestly, Bentley’s instincts as a natural linebacker should help him in terms of being a versatile player at the next level. He has good play recognition skills and will attack the ball at the line of scrimmage. All in all, Bentley’s overall athleticism and speed will be the only determining factors holding him back.

A Gronk w/o a good quarterback isn't the same Gronk.
I love you E5 but the point isn’t Gronk. The point is these trades, while annoying in one year, pay dividends in another.

Add to that B.B. planning for future might mean he’s hanging around a while longer.

You guys are killing me. Haha

Nobody - including me obviously - ever understands what BB is doing during the draft (or even moves besides the draft for that matter). And yet they always seem to produce quality players and quality teams and regularly end up in the AFCCG and for half of Brady's career they've made the Super Bowl. Yes it obviously matters that they have Brady. But you can't win football games by yourself. They always have among the very best TEAMS in the league.

I don't know how they do it, but they do. Year in and year out.

To be fair, they sucked at tackling too—if he can do that you can live with a relative lack of speed as long as he is deployed properly.
