The bears will be bad, Rodgers will be back, Cousins is in the division now...very reasonable chance that’s an earlier second than 43, and with it looking increasingly unlikely the future QB position is filled this weekend, I’m pretty content with the bears trade on the basis of loading up the cupboard of picks for next year alone, let alone picking up the fourth.

So, here’s the net.

Patriots gave up 43.

Patriots get a second next year, get a late fourth rounder this year, and moved up a bit at the end of round two.

So they dropped down gambling that 1 of 3 corners they liked would be there? And when 2 went right away they gave the addt'l pick back and their only 'profit' is the difference between this years 2nd versus Bears 2nd next year?
And pick #105

This is one of the most enjoyable threads, year after year. It’s amazing how the Patriots have been really fucking good for nearly 20 years with as shitty as they apparently draft.

I’m sure this year you guys are all correct.
Are the Pats an elite drafting team? Is anyone?

Complaints are fair bc success rates are modest

They could still use 105 + 143 to sneak back into the third if someone they like is going to get picked.

So any chance a decent QB is available when they pick next or are they punting that decision to 2019?

Does he return punts? I know Cyrus is not very good at that.
Don't think so, but I'm not sure. He's a slot corner. Gilmore/JMac on the outside, and Cyrus was probably the lead guy for that #3 corner role. Hopefully, that's the role that Duke now fills. I don't know enough about Duke to make a judgment on him, so I guess we'll see. Have had mixed results with Gators over the years.

Watching a Patriots draft is like being a kid who's told he can open a present on Christmas Eve. You look a big beautiful wrapped present for days only to find on Christmas Eve that the present is gone, and a note has been left in it's place. The note reads: Sorry, you can't have this present, but in it's place you can open two smaller ones tomorrow, and another big one next year.

So Duke doesn't look good in man coverage, doesn't support the run/tackle well, isn't super athletic, but looks pretty good in zone. Maybe this is a football IQ pick? Second round seems high for that.

This draft proved to be even less exciting than last years and we didn't even have a pick til the 4th last year.

Two firsts and two seconds and we get a guard, an injured running back, and a guy who if all breaks right will be a nickleback.

Nothing to address Brady replacement, really anything on defense, and no linebacker help. I'm not one to criticize Belichick drafts but I really, really dont understand this years efforts at all.

Or just blowback for calling the NFL out on their homophobic draft shit? What ever happened to that investigation?
Whatever it is did not impact the Redskins. Not one iota. They like him a lot. So much that people freaked out here because there was talk of him going here at 13. Which, considering the state of their defense, would have been batshit insane.

Vikings having a dope draft. Both picks at positions of need, and may have been BAP anyways.

Sure but then why use a first round pick on him?

I mean I'm okay with the pick / picks, really. But you can have 100 running backs if you don''t actually have linebackers on the team. Linebacker felt like the #1 problem coming in to the offseason and hasn't been touched.

The number 1 problem was that without replacing Solder, Brady was going to be drawn and quartered. That appears to have been resolved,

I think the draft chart shows that moving up to 56 and pick 117 was basically fair, so those essentially net out.

I think the simplest way to describe tonight’s action is that the Patriots gave up 2(11) for 105 plus next year’s 2(?).

Maybe what you think of the LB situation isn't the same as what Bill thinks. In terms of what the team has. In terms of how the team plans on deploying the LB corps in 2018. He's not perfect, and I'd like to see a linebacker taken too, but BB isn't being intentionally reckless with the roster.

I'm just going to hope this says something positive about what the team believes they have in Harvey Langi and Van Noy, the health of Hightower and Rivers. It likely suggests their evaluation of the players - LB and otherwise - tells them there's a lot of fungible draft prospects, some of whom we'll select tomorrow.

what?

what?
Linebackers whose primary job is to be at the second level, fight through trash and make tackles. Usually dropping into coverage on pass plays, occasionally rushing the passer. I was thinking of Smith and Leonard, I see I missed Evans.

Collins was more of a pass rusher.

Would love to see a player from Stanford or other elite schools discussed without the mandatory reference that they’re smart.

My Harvard roommate played several years in the NHL and was described by every announcer, every game, as being smart. He was and is many awesome things, but smart is not among them.
