49ers Linebacker Reuben Foster (he of the draft slide based on "character concerns") was indicted today on felony domestic assault, felony forcible attempt to prevent reporting of a crime, felony possession of an assault weapon and misdemeanor possession of a large capacity magazine.

49ers have said that they're going to "monitor" the situation and that he's expected to attend camp.

In other (ex) 49er news, Aldon Smith reported to the San Francisco Sheriff’s department to get fittted for an ankle monitor last week...and blew a .40 on the BAC. That is an insane number. I couldn’t report to the toilet, much less the sheriff’s department.

I read that yesterday. That is crazy high. Most of us mortal humans would be comatose or possibly dead at .30-.35

Panthers signed Greg Olsen to a 2-year extension worth up to $20.1 million. That would make him the highest paid TE in the NFL. Wonder what Gronk thinks of this.
Jimmy Graham's new 3/$30M contract made him #1, but Olsen (2/$17.1M) can make a few more bucks by reaching all incentives (bringing him up to 2/$20.1M).

Gronk is playing on a fair, 6-year contract ($9M aav?). He should be thinking of a way to stay healthy and productive.
Since 2010, the Games played tally (regular season) has looked like this:
Gronk (Age 21-28): 16, 16, 11, 6, 10, 15, 6, 14
Olsen (Age 25-32): 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 7
Graham (Age 24-31): 15, 16, 15, 16, 16, 11, 16, 16

Gronk: 474 Catches, 7170 yds, 76 TDs
Olsen: 486 Catches, 5979 yds, 38 TDs
Graham: 556 Catches, 6800yds, 69 TDs

My hypothesis is that Greg Olsen would have put up Gronk-like statistics if he played the last 8 years with Tom Brady and the Pats (or Drew Brees and the Saints). He is a damn fine player and I have no problem with him getting paid like a top TE.

So, when is Dez going to sign?
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/05/09/patriots-rams-in-good-shape-for-2019-compensatory-picks/

Two third round picks likely coming Pats’ and Rams’ way.

The more fodder for draft days’ angst ridden game threading, the better.
So...7 picks in first 3 rounds next year, right?

1st round: Patriots
2nd round: Patriots, Bears
3rd round: Patriots, Lions, Compensatory #1, Compensatory #2

Plenty of draft capital to go get a solid player during training camp should the opportunity arise.

6. We traded the 2019 3rd to Cleveland for Shelton and a 2018 5th.

Any free agents signed from here on out do not impact the comp pick formula so if the Pats sign a safety or Dez Bryant or something it should not take away from the comp pick haul. That said, the performance of the players we lost in next year does impact the formula. So if Butler really under-performs next year, we might not get two 3rd round comp picks as projected. Also, only 32 comp picks are issued in total. So we may not be given the later round comp picks that are projected to come to us.

I know it's kind of "black box", but I thought thew formula was heavily weighted to contract and playing time? I know there's post season awards they take into account, but given what they paid him, I have a hard time seeing Vrabel benching him.

It's not really clear if the performance criteria is meant to protect teams who sign an expensive free agents where the free agent is a bust or if it is meant to reward teams who lost a free agent to a cheap contract where the player goes on to become a star.

Regardless, as the formula is not published anywhere, the NFL has some wiggle room. Maybe I am wearing a red, white and blue tin foil hat, but it would not really surprise me if, instead of receiving two 3rds next year, the Patriots received a 3rd and a 4th.

Former Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema has continued to work for the Patriots after the draft. Look for him to be involved with coaching duties as the team begins its rookie minicamp tomorrow.

Still shaking my head over his leaving Wisconsin. Our gain, I guess.

Dante replacement?
Doubtful, since Bielema has never coached on that side of the ball, he's always been a D-line, DC. It might be an indication of plan of succession on the defensive side of the ball or at least adding another coach while some duties are shifted to accommodate the lack of DC. Everyone assumes that Flores eventually moves to DC, which could lead to Brandon Daly moving to LB coach. Regardless, Flores is going to be adding some responsibility and they will probably need to shuffle duties, so adding a coach with high level experience on the defensive side of the ball makes sense, even if just for a year.

From that article:
"Here's what pissed me off," Johnson said. "The Patriots, obviously, I respect their coach, I respect Bill [Belichick], I respect Tom Brady, but just because the way that they won the Super Bowls, the Patriot Way, is that how everybody else is supposed to do the same thing? No, it's not. And that's what I got mad at, the arrogance by them.

"There was obviously some stuff behind closed doors. Their owner talking s--- to our owner. Bill talking s--- to our head coach [Doug Pederson] before the game. I'm not going to say it, but a lot of s--- kind (of) built up to that, and I just got tired of hearing about it, man, to be honest."

Ok, so first off....where has ANYONE EVER said that everyone else is supposed to do things the way the Patriots do them? Nobody. Ever. Certainly not the Patriots. You can't find a quote ever of a a Patriot player or coach saying that other teams should do things the way the Pats do. That's just idiocy.

Second, WTF is he talking about vis-a-vis Kraft and Belichick talking crap to the Eagles' owner and HC? When did that happen? What got said? There is apparently video of Belichick and Pederson talking before the game, and BB is extremely kind and deferential and complimentary to Pederson and the Eagles. No trash talking at all. Is there any actual evidence that ANY of this is anything other than completely made-up stuff?

Moreover, yes, other approaches have worked - like once. Tomlin has won 1 Super Bowl. Denver won once with Manning, ditto the Colts. GB has won once with Rodgers. The Saints have won once with Brees. The Seahawks won... once. The Giants did win twice but that was mostly smoke and mirrors and they have basically sucked in between and since. Let's see the Eagles get back to a Super Bowl before we declare their approach as viable in the long run.

That's a very strange statement, and oddly timed.

Has a definite tinge of Rodney Harrison/Michael Jordan 'they disrespected us!!!11' invented outrage, but stands out for not serving any practical purpose since the game was 3 months ago.

He might be angling for a post-playing media career as well, it isn't like he'll get one by just placing a call after he retires.

Ordway and his three Neanderthals, Sheppard, DeOssie and Smerlas, maybe, but that’s it. But Johnson wouldn’t know about them, and they are so remote in time in any case.

Here’s the deal — if you’re going to get your outrage on to spark performance, if you are contriving grievances like Michael Jordan used to, look in your own division and conference and look forward.

He actually might be pretty fun to watch in the CFL, with their offensive rules.

It really feels like the Chargers skill players tear their ACL's at a much higher rate than the rest of the league. Most likely not true, but it seems like there is one each year.

Level-headed personifcation of human kindness Richie Incognito has been placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold after throwing a dumbbell at a gym patron.

We spoke with the alleged victim who tells us Incognito first threw a tennis ball at him for no reason — before grabbing a dumbbell and heaving that as well.

The alleged victim says Incognito was rambling about the government and screaming at the man to “get off my f*cking playground.”

Law enforcement confirms cops were called to the gym and met with Incognito.
I dunno how likely it was that he would be picked up after being released from the Bills. I doubt this will help him out all that much going forward.

The sheer crazy in the middle of that Miami OL is hard to fathom. Incognito, Martin, and Pouncey.
