He’d be PS eligible right? Yeah, that wouldn’t be a bad idea.
If the Pats need some information on Davis Webb, they can just call their new WR, Chad Hansen into the office and find out everything they need to know. LOL Hansen caught 92 balls from Webb in their final season at Cal before they got drafted together.

Anyone want to kick the tires on Davis Webb? Released by the Giants.
Release was a surprise.

If they gave Eli the GM keys after last season and said, “you decide”, I don’t think the moves since would be any different than they have been.

Another Giant's cut, WR Kalif Raymond, would also be interesting. Tremendous speed (4.34) and quickness, and also went to holy Holy Cross so there's the local connection. He can return punts and go deep, but at 5'9'', I wonder how he'd work out at slot receiver under BB. I mean, who's the heir apparent to 32 year old Edelman at that position? Sounds like a lot of head scratching in Giants nation over this cut, although a very red flag is that this is the 3rd team he's been waived by.

Paxton Lynch struggled to learn more than 12 plays in the Broncos offense. Hard pass.

The roster on the Pats web site shows Duron Harmon as #21. Interesting. I didn’t know he made that switch, but maybe I’ve been living under a rock.

Yeah, he changed from 30 to 21 at the beginning of camp or earlier this spring to allow Jason McCourty to take 30.

Reiss reports that Bolden won't be back after all -- headed to the Fish...
RB Brandon Bolden is in Miami preparing to sign with the Dolphins, per a source. It was a productive run for Bolden with the Patriots as he made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of Mississippi and emerged as a leader among the RB group and on the field as a core special teamer. He grew a lot as a person over that time. One can see why Adam Gase would value his presence in Miami locker room.

Just a quick note from a Fin’s perspective:

Miami lost core special teams captain Michael Thomas to free agency. They also lost Damian Williams in free agency as well, who was another key special teams piece.

Special teams certainly needed some beefing up. Like the move to bring in a vet and bolster the ST unit.

Duke Dawson to IR and Riley McCarron signed to the 53-man roster. Dawson is a candidate to come back after 8 weeks.

Source: the Patriots have placed second-round CB Duke Dawson (hamstring) on injured reserve and signed WR Riley McCarron from the practice squad.

Two years in a row at least that 2 of the top 3 picks are injured. Frustrating.

Dawson is eligible to come back from the IR though, so that's good news.

Yup. But when players represent value at your draft position due to injury questions, this is gonna happen. Sometimes it works out and you get Gronk. Many times you get Dominique Easley
Yes but not an issue with the guys we drafted this year who are on IR--Dawson and Wynn weren't hurt much in college.

Sometimes football players get hurt.

Yeah seems like we could use McCarron more right now and are ok at CB. Only one DB on the practice squad...so nice to have someone eligible to come back later in the year if injuries hit the DBs.

Short of a big trade for a receiver, it might be a good time to see what we have in McCarron. He knows the system having been here last year and this, and the Pats know him - an important consideration when you consider the Pats have struggled to integrate new and unfamiliar receivers they've brought in in the past. Let McDaniels and BB get creative and have him do some Edelman stuff like punt returns and playing the slot with (probably) Dorsett. Physically, he's got the chops and a pretty high ceiling with excellent speed and quickness

I cant recall the Pat's ever having a guy that was cut at WR and then became a legit top 2 or 3 contributor at the position. They usually judge the spot better than that.

I think that's been true of just about any position player that has been cut by the Pats.

They've had a few players depart via free agency or trade that have had some success: TE David Thomas had a couple of nice seasons for the Saints. Deion Branch was decent for Seattle, but was never quite a successful there as either of his two stints in New England. Adam Vinateri (dome factor alert), Asante Samuel (one of Belichick's few mistakes, IMO), Richard Seymour (Nate Solder was the return), Chandler Jones are probably the most notable. The Jones trade could haunt them, but I'm not sure they beat the Falcons without Mitchell. I struggle to recall any others whose departure really impacted them.

Darius Butler found some success in Indy. CB has been an up and down position since then.

Ihedigbo became a starter in Baltimore I think, but we all said good riddance to that guy.

I think the point about WR is especially true though. Guys simply don't leave NE and become productive NFL receivers.

Does Ben Watson count? Obviously he wasn't cut and is a TE but he's gone on to have a pretty productive career.
Thanks. That's one I definitely missed. Of course, he was replaced by Gronk/Hernandez in 2010, so he tends to get forgotten.

Jabar Gaffney had three seasons better than anything he did in NE after leaving, though opportunity was a big piece of that.

The Pats tend to assemble older, veteran WR units, so it's not surprising their guys rarely go on to success elsewhere. Certainly they have had a number of WR who had their best years before coming to NE.

I specifically meant (and mischaracterized above, my bad) a player cut BY the Pats who returned and became any good with the Pats. There have been many in this role but all have been role players at very best, in most cases complete non factors.

Like...regarding McCarron, I dont expect to see ANYTHING of impactful value because if there was anything there he would not have been cut. To me, he's a warm body to bide time till others get healthy

I know people are leary of Dez and his attitude and route running, but if he’d be willing to come in, play nice with others and embrace his role as mostly a red zone presence I don’t see why not give it a try. Him and Gronk would terrorize opposing Ds. Very big IF though

McCarron. Damn. One mistake.
Situational football

It wasn’t that it was a mistake, it’s that it showed a complete lack of awareness. There was no need to try get some extra yardage there. BB and staff probably have no desire to have to walk everyone through what to do in every situation like a pop warner coach.

Didn't he turn down $7 million from Ravens? He'd get nowhere near that from NE.

I don’t think money will matter to him if NE comes calling.

For the past few weeks he has been tweeting/instagramming about his love for Brady/pats. Almost like he is begging for the pats to rech out.

I know he has. My point is he might be thinking they're going to pay a little more than $1 million. The Ravens aren't a horrible organization (except to us). It's not like turning down the Browns.

But he may be at the point where he takes whatever he can get.

Yes, he didn’t want to be tethered to a 3-year contract. He wanted a one-year make good. That was then, this is now.

My guess — only a guess — is we get to Dez only if someone else goes down and we are in desperation mode.

He is not signing to be a good soldier. He is signing to put up numbers to make the next big contract. If you don’t feed him .... we have seen that movie many times on the sideline.

Given the team and coaching staff he couldn’t learn a playbook from, I’m willing to lay a little blame on that side rather than just call the guy a complete dunderhead without taking a look under the hood.
