Defense starting to shape into last year's playoff form. Win anyway.
Just to refresh my memory, I looked up the TOI numbers for the defense in game 3 of the Ottawa series, which was the game that they were so banged up that Tommy Cross had to play.

Chara 29:07
K. Miller 25:38
McAvoy 24:44
Morrow 22:27
Cross 13:08
Liles 12:24

That bottom 3 consists of an NHL healthy scratch, a career AHL guy, and a guy that retired after not being able to find a job this season. And McAvoy was playing only his 3rd NHL, and 7th overall professional game. Yet they overcame a 3-0 deficit to force OT. That's really impressive.

Panthers are just outside the playoff picture: 5 points behind NJ and 4 points behind Columbus with 3 games in hand on both of them. They're going to be desperate for points tonight.

Meanwhile this is one of the games the Bs have in hand against Tampa. A win tonight moves them within 2 points of the #1 spot and makes that Saturday game even more interesting.

The B's have all 4 FLA games in the last 14 of the season. Florida is going to be a desparate team playing aggressive, playoff-style hockey. I'm ok with a regular-season tuneup to the playoffs of some high level competition.
The B's also have 3 of the Tampa games left too. Those 3 will be a huge benchmark as to whether the Bruins will be a plausible Eastern Conference Finals participant. Only 1 game left out of 14 that isn't against a playoff-bound opponent or one fighting for a spot.

I got the SD Florida feed. Terrible picture, worse announcers.

"How do you slip, you're a professional hockey player?" Fucking clowns.

A match penalty hitting from behind penalty there is so beyond the pale I don't even know what to say.

Not much different than Hornqvist on McAvoy which was deemed totally clean.

And Backes got more shoulder than head.

Seriously confused by that. He was not hit from behind, and seeing it replayed, it seemed as though Backes started to rotate his upper body to minimize the impact. I'm ok with something on Backes for not avoiding the head, but he didn't clean him out either. A match penalty there just doesn't compute.

I just don't get any part of that call except the instigator/fighting portion.

Match penalty for hit to the head, I can see the argument / reason behind the call. L'Écuyer and Lee are among the worst officials in the league. They see a guy who has never fought in Matheson incensed and think the contact is markedly worse than it was.

Doesn't make it right, but I at least understand it unlike a hit from behind. At worst it's 2 for a hit to the head.

I've long since given up hope for officiating consistency in this league. Hell, most linesmen in this league can't get faceoffs right.
