Turns out we got something interesting for Roenis Elias by trade after all. He has been assigned to Portland but is currently listed as a reserve player, so he apparently won't be making his debut tonight.

Red Sox acquire outfielder Eric Filia from Mariners

BALTIMORE -- The Red Sox added to their minor-league outfield depth Tuesday, acquiring Eric Filia from the Mariners. The 25-year-old represents the player-to-be-named-later in the trade that sent Roenis Elias to Seattle on April 23.

Filia had been ranked as the Mariners' No. 14 prospect after the 2017 season, having played this year at Double-A Arkansas. The lefty hitter was batting .426 (23-for-54) with 10 runs, three doubles and a home run this season, totaling a .508 on-base percentage and .537 slugging percentage.

He had been suspended 50 games prior to this season for a drug of abuse, having also missed a year at UCLA due to injury and academic suspension.

A 20th-round pick in the 2016 draft, Filia has hit a combined .343 with 10 homers, and an .888 OPS in 210 professional games. He has been named a post-season All-Star in each of his two full professional seasons, earning MVP honors in the Short-A Northwest League in 2016.
Being the #14 prospect in Seattle's barren system is sort of a dubious honor, but there may be ingredients for an MLB player here. He turns 26 next month and has all of 13 games above A ball. He's run really impressive BB and K rates in his pro career with solid doubles power, but he basically has to be doing that as an old-for-his-league college guy to bother rostering.

Might ultimately be a CAL league mirage guy, or an old guy/feasts on young pitching mirage, but this is a lot like what Daniel Nava was, except with a dimebag. Our lack of high minors OF depth has been noted elsewhere (unrosterable Rusney excluded); even if this guy doesn't pan out, you can see it from an organizational depth/need perspective, too.

Diaz is not doing much else but he has 3 HRs in his first 44 PA (10 games) as a 17 year old. That is pretty impressive. For reference, Devers had 3 in 128 PA, Bogaerts had 3 in 280 PA, Luis Alex Basabe had 1 in 452, Margot had 4 in 309 PA.
