Guessing that they have come to terms with a portion of that money. Perhaps half? Anyone else think it's really odd that he's sitting there with no Yankee reps at the table?
No, Cashman and Girardi will speak next, I think this is how A-Rod wanted it.

It really feels like he's being pushed out. Either retire or we're gonna release you.

Surprised there's no phantom DL stint until the rosters expand
I think they missed their chance with this, it would have had to be a few weeks back and they had other priorities then, trying to move guys before the deadline.

Why do they need the roster spot? For that final push for the pennant?
No, they need to get Austin and Judge ABs to see what they have in them. Both of those guys have nothing left to prove in AAA.

Funny. He's the new Reggie Jackson, special advisor to the owner. Spring training instructor.

DL him. Look I know you're gonna defend this but it just feels really slimy.

How is it slimy in the least? He is a worthless player at this point and has been since last August. If he was anyone else, he would have been DFAd a month ago.

"Those weren't the cards I was dealt."

"I'm at peace with the organizations decision."

Finally a real question.

This reminds me of the Phil Rizzuto story that he used to tell when he "retired"

Yankees sold Babe Ruth to Boston Braves for one dollar in the winter of 1935.

I'm guessing this is why he's retiring. It gets the money off the luxury tax calculation. Then they sign him as an advisor and pay him the rest "off the books."
Maybe so. People have been talking about a buyout for years now and it never made sense to me. He has a contract. Why would he accept anything less than that?

It sounds like he is going to be unconditionally released and then he will sign a new contract to remain with the organization as an advisor, etc.

As such, I think he collects all of his money.

However, by not reaching the 700 HR milestone, the Yankees do save money on that.

Doesn't seem like they'll let him hit in Boston. Damnit would have loved to see that reaction.

So he's going to be an advisor to Yankee shortstops... did they clear that with Jeter?
