“On behalf of the entire Chicago Cubs organization, we are honored to present a 2016 World Series Championship Ring to Mr. Steve Bartman,” the Cubs told WGN in a statement. “We hope this provides closure on an unfortunate chapter of the story that has perpetuated throughout our quest to win a long-awaited World Series. While no gesture can fully lift the public burden he has endured for more than a decade, we felt it was important Steve knows he has been and continues to be fully embraced by this organization. After all he has sacrificed, we are proud to recognize Steve Bartman with this gift today.”

Well, good for him but what a horribly awkward wording. ". . the story that has perpetuated throughout our quest . . . ".
Seriously?

Different sort of circumstances, obviously, but I've always thought that Dan Duquette should have received a 2004 World Series ring from the Red Sox. He certainly had more to do with that team winning then, say, Brandon Puffer

Bartman released a statement. Full quote in the linked article.
I humbly receive the ring not only as a symbol of one of the most historic achievements in sports, but as an important reminder for how we should treat each other in today’s society. My hope is that we all can learn from my experience to view sports as entertainment and prevent harsh scapegoating, and to challenge the media and opportunistic profiteers to conduct business ethically by respecting personal privacy rights and not exploit any individual to advance their own self-interest or economic gain.

If you haven't seen the 30 for 30 on Bartman I highly recommend it. It's very sad and I hope it has changed the way people treat each other over sports. I always thought it wasn't fair to lump Bartman and Buckner together which media hacks always seemed to do; one guy was a player who goofed up a routine play, the other was a fan who did something 99 percent of fans would do. Bartman also ended up being a complete scapegoat for Alex Gonzalez and the Cubs pitching, who royally fucked that game up.

Yeah, what a storybook ending for someone who was, by all accounts, a Cubs superfan. This word is thrown around too often in the sports universe, but that was a classy gesture by Ricketts and Theo.

I half-expected him to auction it for charity, but I can read that bit from his statement about keeping it in the family for generations... and now I understand how, to him and his family, it's basically worth more than money.

Since it took place Bartman has turned down tons of financial opportunities to remain out of the spotlight. Someone I think offered him like $100k to be in a super bowl ad and he passed.

Maybe Alex Rodriguez can be there and catch it as it falls. Seriously though, class gesture by the Cubs IMHO.
