Owens used up an option last year as well .. He got into 11 games in 2015 and spent the rest of the time in AAA.

I think, though, that his original trip to AAA in 2015 was not an option because he wasn't on the 40-man? (He was a non-roster invite to ST 2015). And then he stayed with the Sox after getting called up, so they didn't option him back until this spring. I'm getting that from here:

So Owens has 2 options left? That make him much more valuable than I've been thinking. With another whole two years to work on his command he could put himself back in the picture for 2019.

I'm not the expert, but that's how I read those transactions. If he was a non- roster invite in 2015, and wasn't returned to AAA after his call-up, then he wasn't optioned for the first time until this year.
