Not a surprise, but the Bruins lifted the interim tag off Cassidy.

Edit: well I guess we're all awake and at it this morning. Please delete.

Thrilled with the performance under his leadership. Well earned and deserved.

Now let's figure out the roster.

Nice that they did not drag it out like they did with Clode the last time.

And good decision, this team clearly responded to Cassidy. The first round exit sucked but the effort was there and the injury totals were real and hard to deal with.

Between here and everywhere.
First order of business:

NO ATTEMPTS AT PUCKS HIGH OFF THE GLASS.

All joking aside, it seems like given the circumstances he did a great job with the team this year. I'm excited to see what he can do with a full season and a (hopefully) healthy roster.

Like the move.
Hopefully he can clean up the Too many men issues and tighten the defensive structure just a bit. Otherwise he seems to put his players in position to succeed and let them play to their strengths instead of trying to get everyone to fit into a rigid system which is hard to do in a salary cap era.
Look forward to the Cassidy era.

I like the hiring.

Having said that, would there have been any benefit to the team interviewing other candidates just to hear their ideas on what could be done to improve the team? Any maybe, just maybe you find someone out there who might have been a better choice?

He deserves at least a season or two, he did a good job with what he had. Some of that was probably luck normalizing, but he definitely had the team playing a different, more aggressive style that contributed to it.

I'd think none of the guys fired in the last couple of weeks appealed to them, and unless the front office is THAT incompetent, they probably put out feelers to less-known coaches during Cassidy's regular season run and didn't like the landscape there either.

There's nothing wrong with removing the interim tag. Now let's see what he can do with an off-season to shape the team.

Darryl Sutter couldn't contribute anything?

I don't know much about the other guys who were let go this year, but I figured he's got some knowledge. Would he come for an interview knowing there was a decent Interim in place? I don't know, but I hope they called him at least.

Now lock in Burlington's finest, Jay Pandolfo, as assistant coach and they're assured a deep cup run.

Second order of business:

5 FINGERS, 5 PLAYERS. THIS IS NOT HARD.
Joking aside, and I know both of these were an issue, but how much of the increase in both of these do you guys think can be attributed to the change in coaching/playing style in the middle of the season. Less so with the too many men stuff, I guess, but I sort of feel like a lot of the delay penalties could have been due to the big change in defensive zone philosophy of getting the puck out of the zone faster and more aggressively. It seemed like a big shift from Claude, where instead of throwing it up the boards, they would so often go back and forth behind the net, maintaining structure over aggressiveness, until they could make the "safe" play out of their own zone.

Do you guys think this is something that can be cleaned up with a full pre-season's worth of practice under Cassidy?

And on topic, I love this. I thought the team played well, and was really exciting to watch under Cassidy, and I'm looking forward to a step forward next year.

To your question: Not really.

I'm on board with this move. Given at one point a year ago there were rumors on various boards of Barry Melrose or Mike Millbury, I'm quite happy at this turn of events. Which is another reason why I'd the team not bother talking with Darryl Sutter.

I don't think there's a whole lot to read into with the DOG penalties. I think it was mostly coincidental. The only bad one to me was Chara's at the end of game 2. That was a careless clear when he had all the time in the world to settle the puck and be sure about getting it out and keeping it in play. The rest were bad luck. Krug's absence forced more "chip the puck out" clearing attempts than they'd probably like, so I guess that could be a cause, but I don't think there's much that could've been done to prevent it.

Yeah, just bad luck. I mean one of them wasn't even a clearing attempt that missed the glass - it was a bat at a puck in the air in the slot. Just one of those things.

Andy Brickley's potty mouth
It's a fair question because even though there's some bad luck involved, there is also a sense that they need to button some things up, which is indicative of the sloppy delay of game and too many men penalties. A full offseason should fix those things and if we see more sloppy play through next season, then I'd be concerned that the coaching staff is not concentrating on the right things.

It's a valid concern.

Cassidy earned the full time job and glad that Sweeney and Neely didn't drag out the process. I liked their aggressiveness under Cassidy. They need to focus on the roster now.

Exactly correct. No reason to mess about with the coach. Now go address the issues on the ice.
