I would be SHOCKED if Tom Crean is back at IU next year. It seems like he has run his course

Buyout is quite large this year at $3.5 million. Drops down to $1 million after July 1 which is kind of late to replace him. While I think they'd love to fire him, don't be surprised if the economics force another year.

If a hot young coach makes the obligatory surprise tournament run and willing to come take it on the chin for a few years in Bloomington then the economics do not matter. At some schools, and Indiana is one of them, economics aren't a factor.

My Indiana friends tell me that Chris Collins is the guy they are coveting.

Quinnipiac is willing to pay its new coach $800,000 per Jeff Goodman. They are in the mix with Andy Toole of Robert Morris, Mark Schmidt of St. Bonaventure, and Will Brown of Albany.
They also might be looking at Travis Steele, Xavier Associate Head Coach. Also Goodman followed up on the tweet saying that the 800k would only be for certain coaches.

NC State's #1 target is Archie Miller.

Some others: UNCW's Kevin Keatts, VCU's Will Wade (after not getting Shaka Smart 6 years ago).

I just don't understand why Archie Miller would take this job. He's in such a strong position right now and can afford to wait it out another year for the right opportunity if he likes.

NC State is a really, really tough job. I'm not sure what they do. I absolutely think they can get Kevin Keatts and/or Will Wade but I don't see them getting Miller who has a higher profile. So actually I guess that's what they should do.

(I'm still thinking about this --- I live in Raleigh so it's home turf --- and I'm not sure they get Wade either. VCU is probably a better job than NC State at the moment and he can absolutely afford to wait)

I went to 4 basically empty NC State games this year and they have a consensus Top-Five pick on their roster for one year and everyone knew it. If he can't draw interest then what can? They show up for Duke and Carolina to boo but otherwise there's little to no interest in the program. Laughably, they think of themselves as a football school.

If you ever want to see a parade of trucks flying huge confederate flags just drive down Hillsborough St. on a Saturday in the Fall.

I agree with you. I mean, maybe he wants to be successful at his alma mater, but there is likely a much better opportunity out there

edit: like maybe Indiana?

To be clear, I actually think that Archie Miller will, one day, be the coach of NC State. But my question is: why now? He is so young and in five years the landscape here will be completely different - K will be 75, Roy will be 71 with the very real possibility of being in the middle of a multi-year postseason ban should he decide to stick it out. Why come now when it's not like NC State is going to not be available to him whenever he wants?

Makes sense -- Big Ten success, part of the Bob Knight coaching tree (2nd generation). Only downside is that if he succeeds at IU, he'll be a frontrunner to succeed Coach K when the time comes.
Isn't he arguable the frontrunner now though? I don't think IU is in a position to worry about a scenario 5 years away like that [I know K will only be 75 but he's had health problems and I don't see him as an 80 year old coach, but more like a Coach Smith that stayed on, had an office and a role during the Gutheridge years]. Indiana is going to lose out to Duke but you can only say that about maybe 6-7 programs in the country. I think they go for the best coach available, which has to be Collins I think.

Alford wants the job so bad it is killing him. He was supposedly the one that fed the statements regarding Crean and Missouri to an old reporter bud from his stint in Arizona in an attempt to get him fired.

The number of idiots on the Inside the Hall forum that think Indiana can get Stevens is just silly. He's a smart, successful coach with a hell of a GM in a basketball town. No recruiting and no alumni.

From what I am hearing Chris Collins is their number one target.

(note: I am an IU alum)

Well of course there is talk of that. I'm sure that's how he sells the program. But I don't see why he wouldn't take the money and huge program.

Because if he isn't successful at IU, succeeding Coach K at Duke is out of the question, and landing another gig like Northwestern (where he is coach for life if he wants to be) is hardly assured. Also, you aren't going to succeed at IU the way Bob Knight did back in the day; if his ultimate goal is Duke, the things he needs to do to succeed at Indiana might hurt his chances.

I still think Collins takes the IU job if it's offered, but there's a decent argument that he shouldn't.

Ok, this is a good point. If he does not do well at IU then you're right, Duke is out. I just think you can't hold out for Duke when you are competing with Wojo and Capel. When you get an opportunity to grab one of these marquee programs that pay a shitload of money I think you have to take it. Also, these guys are competitors. He probably doesn't believe he can fail.

But couldn't that competitiveness make him truly believe that he could do something special at Northwestern? He already did something no other coach has done there. I don't know that he will stay or he should stay. But I think this line of thinking certainly could be more than just a sales pitch.
I wonder how much he talks to Fitzgerald, who has spurned a lot of bigger football programs to stay there for over a decade.

Anything is possible and neither of us are in his head or know him but I'm coming from the perspective of IU being a Top Ten job.

I would be more inclined to agree with you if we were talking about 90% of other major conference programs.

A couple names off the top of my head they would go after would be Steve Alford, Billy Donovan, Sean Miller.

How you know it's Donovan. it gets close to NBA playoffs (and into NBA playoffs) and IU has yet to announce a new coach.

Donovan has been pretty successful at OKC. Not sure why he would leave now for the headache that is IU and the thought of their collective fan base that they are top dog when they've accomplished very little in the last 25 years.

That said Crean deserved to be canned. Got a pass for the first 3 years for the mess he took over. The last 6 he's had a lot of talent with pretty minimal results. They went 7-11 in what was a very mediocre Big Ten. Heck, MSU lost 2 of their 3 big men for the season in the first week of practice yet were able to get a winning conference record to squeeze into the Dance. No excuse for not making it this year when the NCAA bubble was so incredibly weak.

his comments yesterday were pretty cryptic

“I am totally happy here,” Donovan said. “I love it here. I love the guys I work with every day. I love our staff, the organization. As far as I’m concerned, my commitment is totally here and doing the best job I can while I’m here.”

I think Rand in in the 300k range. Obviously hockey is not the money maker that college basketball is.
I guess it's just a different scale, and lack of TV money. Rand's team certainly has put more fannies in the seats than the hoops team the last decade plus. At the women have been good lately - made the NCAA tourney this year.

This could be Stevens, who would actually make more sense than Donovan. *ducks*

Seriously, if Brad wanted IU, he probably would've stayed at Butler, and if IU seriously thought Brad would take the job, they probably would've moved on from Creen sooner.

There might be a second marquee opening this summer -- if Alford takes the IU job, UCLA needs a coach. If I'm Donovan, I pass on IU, but if he ever intends to return to college, UCLA is tough to pass up.

Stevens is not going to go back to the NCAA in my opinion and one of the primary reasons is the access to professional, talented analytics departments and world class facilities.
