There's no financial reason to extend Sale until Hanley and Sandoval are off the books, and since Porcello and Sale himself will also be coming off then, the FO has 75 million reasons to wait to reassess until then.

Extending Mookie and Xander needs to remain priorities 1 and 2.
Yes and no.
If Sale pitches the rest of the year as he has started it out, and especially if he carries it deep into the post season, then he can ask a lot more money at that time than he can now.
Weighing up the possibility of that (and how much more he could command) versus the luxury tax implications of doing it this year is the tough part.

Yet he still threw 186 innings, the only full season he hasn't crossed 200. It's pretty fair to say he's been pretty healthy over his career.
Yes, he has thrown a lot of innings but missing a month-and-a-half because of a strained tricep in his pitching arm makes me hesitant to declare him "never injured."

The on the field results help, but there is plenty to like about Chris Sale outside the lines so far too.

TINSTAANIP
As I understand it, that has to do with young prospects breaking down. After a cup of coffee and two-thirds of a season as a starter, Price was 27 and had just come off three seasons in which he averaged about 215 IP per season. Then he went on to throw almost 250 innings the next year. How much can his arm take?

Sorry, that was my lame attempt at a joke. I was trying to play on TINSTAAPP (There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect) by saying There Is No Such Thing As A Never-Injured Pitcher.

Sale has 23 more strikeouts than the next closest pitcher (85 to 62) - 37% more. There is no one even close

Next start is against Oakland---the team with the 3rd most strikeouts in AL.

Sale's numbers are amazing through 8 starts. 58.2 innings(T-1st in AL), 32 hits, 14 ER, 13 BB, 85 K, 2.15 ERA. His ERA+ is 199(6th in AL), FIP is 1.75(2nd in AL), 0.76 WHIP(2nd in AL by .001), and an incredible 13 K/9(2nd in AL but Salazar only has 36 IP and has 32 less K's). It's a shame he doesn't have more wins to show for this kind of resume. He is also tied for the AL lead in all players b-ref WAR with 2.5 with Carlos Carrasco.

Hell of a lot better return than that bum Pomeranz. I'm scared to think where this rotation would be without Sale.

In a world where the Sox didn't acquire Sale, they'd be down their #1, 4, 5 starters (Price, Wright, Pom) and completely screwed like most teams that lose 3/4ths of their rotation. The amazing thing is that the rotation is still functional after losing the 2, 5, and 6 starters - mostly because of just how impressive Sale has been.

For a lot of teams, a 1-2 of Porcello and Rodriguez would be pretty solid. How many teams have a CYA winner as their #1, and a guy with a 2.80 era and 10.7 k/9 as their #2?

Add in Sale and hopefully(!) Price, and this rotation could have me as their #5 and be ok.

That said, get well soon David, and also you, Drew.

They would probably still have Buchholz, and he's laid up for the year, too.

Yeah, I noticed that fierce Moncada slump too. Meanwhile, Kopech has been pretty solid it looks (2.90 ERA, 62 innings, 83 strikeouts but 40 walks) at AA. Could Kopech turn out to be the better piece for the White Sox?
