I posted this last night in the game thread; there is real traction here I heard from a very close source to the UT mens basketball program.

Shaka is looking to get our becuase he likely will get fired after next season (look at Texas' roster for next season, it's atrocious).

He was on the staff w his brother, Bobby Hurley. Who played under Coach K.
lol Bobby was on his staff.

It's more like Bobby is part of Danny's coaching tree since neither coached at Duke.

Hurley says he will stay at URI for less money if they commit to spending $ to grow the program - specifically citing better facilities, pay raises for assistants, and more charter flights for away games. Seems like it really puts the program in a bad spot if he goes now.

They took a bus to Pittsburgh to play in the NCAA Tournament.

His demands, at least on their surface, do not seem unreasonable. Invest in the program or I’ll leave for someplace that does is a fair place to start negotiating.

Of course if could also just be a face saving move where he is asking for the Cadillac of training facilities and a private jet knowing that URI will never say yes but allowing him to claim moral high ground while skipping town.

They bused to Pittsburgh because of the impending storm last week. Otherwise, they would have chartered. Their charter flight was postponed to Wednesday and the band/cheerleaders/athletics staff were on it. They chartered back to RI after Sunday's game.

I have no idea if his demands are reasonable or not, but airing them publicly like this makes URI looks very unattractive to recruits and if he doesn't stay.

The NCAA covers charters for teams playing in the tournament. RedOctober is right on.

Hurley can get advice from Calhoun on how to beat Duke in a national title game.
Or national semifinal...

I was debating just how bad the quality of college bssketball is today with some friends. That teams like xavier and UVa and even Villanova are one seeds with 0,0, and tops two nba players on their roster. The 2004 semifinal between Uconn and Duke had 12 nba players and 10 first round picks (6 for Uconn). The biggest shot was hit by non-nba player rashad Anderson however.

In case you forgot how this one ended: [emoji18][emoji18]

This year will be similar in that Duke will play Villanova in the only real matchup of quality teams left. Of course dukes players are all 18-19 and Villanova are 21-22. But any final after that game will be anti-climatic, unless maybe Kentucky (but both duke and VU are 10 points better than KY). In 2004 Uconn played gatech in the final. It was a joke. Much like when they beat that mediocre butler team after beating KY in the semis with Kemba.

That '99 title game is my all-time favorite college hoops game.

That game was played at such a high level. Two great teams. Loved Khalid. Probably best Duke team to not win title, DukeSox? And Calhoun outcoached K, who didn’t adjust to the big/big double on brand (this not leaving Langdon or the other great shooters) and refused to play Magette in the second half even though Uconn had no one to guard him and he could be physical with Rip on D. Maybe K was worried about having to vacate a title for playing an illegal player. [emoji12][emoji12]

The walk back to the hotel in St Pete was so much fun. We partied until like 4-5am and had to make 7:00am flights back to nyc. Ugly. Uconn chants on the plane. Lol. Great game.

I’d say one of the best ever teams to not win it all. Not just Duke. All year they lost that game and a buzzer beater to Cincinnati in the Great Alaskan Shootout in November. They had won like 35 in a row. They had 5 guys drafted in the top 15. That’s ridiculous. I mean Maggette was their freaking 6th man.

No sign of Dan Hurley at the Ryan Center today. Presumably at home mulling his decision. #URI, UConn, Pittsburgh all in play. Strong, diverse offers made by all three schools.

Hearing Hurley struggling with decision. He's a family guy, and seems it's coming down to what's best for family.

That would seem to indicate Pitt would be out. I'd doubt he'd want to take his son out of high school.

Rumor is he was surprised by Rhode Island's offer, didn't think/believe they could be that aggressive

Isn't his son a high school junior or senior? He could easily stay in RI to finish out high school regardless of where the job is.

Sure he could live away from his family for his final year or two of high school......I'm not sure how "easily" it would be for a family to make that decision though. I'm sure that has something to do with the struggle for Hurley.

Again, do we know this guy is actually a good coach? Has he beaten any good teams? Won anything? Recruited diamonds who became pros? I have go clue, just asking. I sense if his name was Dan Smith the offers might not be so forthcoming?

He spent 2 years at Wagner and they improved from 13 wins to 25 wins from year 1 to year 2. In 6 years at URI he's 113-82 with 3 20 win season. He inherited a tough situation and went from 8 wins to 14 to 23 in year 3. He won the A-10 tournament last season and the regular season title this year. He's got the #34 ranked recruiting class coming in next year that includes 2 top 150 recruits so we know he can recruit good players to a non-P5.

Thanks. I’m not sure that tells me he can succeed nationally, but I’m not sure Uconn is a national program anymore. And we know Pitt is a mess.

EVANSVILLE – At some point Wednesday, for the third time in as many days, a Harrison High School graduate will interview for their hometown University of Evansville basketball head coaching position.

It was Calbert Cheaney on Monday and then David Ragland on Tuesday who met for an in-person, formal interview with athletics director Mark Spencer. Sources with direct knowledge of the hiring search said that a new frontrunner emerged after the first round of phone interviews.

That person is Walter McCarty, who has been an assistant under Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens since 2013.

He will fly in for the interview Wednesday. Six people were contacted to speak in general about the former University of Kentucky player and none responded – perhaps out of superstition or permission that wasn’t granted.

Any other interviews at this point are highly unlikely. One of the confirmed finalists, Travis Steele – the top assistant at Xavier – withdrew his name from consideration after rumors that Musketeers’ head coach Chris Mack may leave for the opening at Louisville.

McCarty was said to be “very, very impressive” in his phone interview and has references from some highly-regarded people in the coaching industry.

Sources say he would schedule the best opponents possible so his teams will be battle-tested. He has practices and drills ready and recruiting networks set up. He also wants to be publicly involved, which would be consistent with the charitable causes he has taken part of during his time in the NBA.

Hurley has turned around two programs in two opportunities. Nobody is certain to be able to succeed/recruit at a big-time program but his resume certainly shows him to be as capable as anyone coming up through the ranks.

Some Uconn donors evidently footing the bill.
#why?

Uconn paying dan Hurley more than jay wright makes at Villanova. How bad is the Pitt situation as they reportedly offered $3.5m per?

Uconn now solidly positioned to win the A10! Lol. Of course that's better than what they are now

Isn't that pretty similar to UConn's two most recent contracts offered to Calhoun and Ollie? Maybe a slight increase but in same ballpark.

Where is that Calhoun presser clip?

Edit: Here it is....I so love this.

The blog that broke the Hurley news last night is called “a dime back”. Lolol

When they signed Ollie and Calhoun they still had $10m per in big east exit fees coming in and the state/school were subsidizing the athletic department with $20+ million per year. That is all gone now.

When they signed Ollie to extension and gave him the absurd $10m buyout, they still had hopes of joining a P5 conference. So they kept up appearances in terms of the athletic department budget. Note Edsall is getting $1m to be football coach and Hurley contract being paid from outside. They’re never getting into a competitive conference so for the AD to convince donors to do this is a great sell job, especially considering how the AD is currently undermining Ollie so they don’t have to pay the $10m. The “investigation” into uconn’s basketball program was initiated internally so they had cause for firing Ollie. The real reason they wanted him out is that he’s a personal disaster. Not going to go into it here but look at how six plus recruits trandmsfer after a year. Not because of lack of success on the court...

Why isn't UConn in a power five conference? Over the past twenty years they've been one of the five or ten best men's programs and of course, the women are otherworldly. Was there some behind the scenes stuff?

Good point about TBE money. I doubt Ollie wants his personal stuff public so I'm guessing he settles for a portion of what he's owed. Some of the stuff I've heard about him is off the charts scandalous that caused his messy divorce, player transfers, etc and likely would prevent him from ever getting another head job (see what I did here).

Bad football team in a small market means none of the big conferences want to go out of their way for them. But why aren't the in the Big East for everything except for football?
