This change actually affects the Patriots because they can no longer use the injury report for gamesmanship.
Im also kind of shocked that something like this was announced...

Edit: BB can just list everyone as questionable

Edit 2: this also fucks with Fantasy Football and gambling.....

I'm guessing it just changes the nature of the gamemanship - I'm sure BB can find a loophole in there somewhere

Despite being a widely held opinion that Belichick plays with his injury report, isn't it true that he has followed the rule to the letter while other teams (cough cough Colts cough cough) are the ones who were breaking the rules in terms of how they reported players?

Yes. That's why I used gamesmanship.

Why yes. Yes they did. And no, Roger did not drop the hammer, because reasons: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2614643-colts-reportedly-wont-be-sanctioned-for-andrew-lucks-injury-report-status

Is this a way for the NFL to punish teams who rest players during Week 17? Is resting a star player the week before a playoff game an acceptable explanation for The Almighty?

They'd just have to list them on the Game Status Report as "questionable".

As to the BB gamesmanship thing, he's been pretty by-the-book on this. For a very long time the rules required a player who missed any practice time to be listed on the injury report - Brady was routinely held out of certain drills to reduce wear on his shoulder - hence the years of Probable(Shoulder).

This one is a head scratcher as others have pointed out the biggest impact this will have is in Vegas and fantasy which is the golden goose for the NFL.

This is a bunch of guys in suits watching a money counter go up up up and making sure to look busy in case anyone decides to question their usefulness.

Is there any other reason to have official injury reports at all other than to satisfy gambling interests?

Nothing about the way the NFL operates suggests that they have the ability to think long-term. Everything they do seems to be based on what low hanging fruit can they grab immediately. Get the players union over a barrel without thinking about the long term consequences of not having labor peace. Go after eyeballs in Europe, China and Mexico instead of growing the game on digital channels domestically. Push for an 18 game schedule, without stopping to consider player safety or how injuries to stars makes games less watchable. Talk about expanding the playoff field without worrying about the scheduling/logistcal concerns.

The NFL is not run by long term strategic thinkers. They own a printing press that is spitting out a river of cash. They don't have the incentives or leadership to stop and look at the long game. This just feels like more of the same.

So someone may not play fantasy football because of this?

Long term potentially. If you have no idea who is playing now because 30% of all NFL players are listed as questionable that could have a impact on fantasy and DFS. Not everyone can wait until the inactives are announced to set lineups.

My first reaction earlier today was that this absolutely could impact fantasy football's popularity. If, and its a big if, it becomes hard to tell who is really questionable vs. probable, etc... and it forces people to keep up with actives/inactives to the last minute... then, yes, it could absolutely negatively impact fantasy football. All it takes is losing a few hundred bucks over messing up your roster due to the new rules. Especially amongst the more casual player crowd. That's a shitload of people that might watch redzone or something for a little while who might not be so inclined if they stopped playing in leagues.
