This is a great move and story. Local guy from Brockton who has been intricately involved in pitcher development and a career Red Sox. Those who were pining for Varitek as manager, this is your guy.

I like it. It doesn't seem like there were any big names worth getting excited about once Hickey and Maddux were off the board, so why not go with a highly-regarded internal coach who knows all of these guys and presumable works well with everyone. Hopefully he has some ideas from his previous role that he wasn't in a position to implement before but can now.
