MINOR LEAGUE STATISTICS LINK: http://web.minorleag..._pbp&pid=572062

INFORMATION:
Renfroe was an All-State selection and the Division 2-5A Player of the Year as a junior in 2008. In his senior season he hit .470 (40-for-85) with seven home runs, 35 RBIs and 18 stolen bases while playing multiple positions for South Panola High, including pitcher, shortstop and third base. During the Under Armour/Baseball Factory All-American Game at Wrigley Field, Renfroe hit a home run and struck out five over 2 innings of relief work. He is the son of former Cubs pitcher Laddie Renfroe.

MLB.com SCOUTING REPORT on Renfroe:
Hitting ability: Renfroe is a natural hitter with a balanced approach, quick hands and an ability to use the whole field.
Power: He has loft power now that grades out as average. It should develop into better than that because of his hitting ability.
Running speed: He's an average runner, about 4.3 seconds down the line from the right side.
Base running: He's a very good baserunner, with excellent instincts. He's not a basestealer, but he can steal a base.
Arm strength: As a pitcher who throws 93 mph off the mound and a high school quarterback, he's got a plus arm in the infield.
Fielding: He's got above-average hands and terrific instincts.
Range: He's got average range, though his instincts help him play a tick above that.
Physical Description: Renfroe is an athletic infielder who has reminded some of David Wright, both in how he looks and how he plays.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Above-average offensive tools at the plate. Plus arm and defensive skills as well. Very athletic and instinctive player.
Weaknesses: He eventually may get too big and strong to stay at shortstop, but his bat should play fine at third.
Summary: Renfroe is an exciting all-around high school talent who can do a little of everything on the baseball field. A talented pitcher who throws 93 mph and the QB for one of the top high school football programs in the country, he's very athletic but has baseball smarts to go along with it. He should hit for average and power in the future, so even if he has to move off shortstop, he's got the bat to make sense at third. His dad played pro ball for nine years, so the bloodlines are there to boot, making him a very intriguing player who should go off the board pretty early.

A few interesting pre-draft tidbits on Renfroe from George King of the New York Post:

QUOTE
They are first and second in the AL East and have strong interest in David Renfroe, a Mississippi high school stud athlete.

Welcome to the latest chapter in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

Renfroe, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound shortstop, worked out for the Red Sox last weekend in Fenway Park and will be at Yankee Stadium on Thursday to put his tools on display for Yankees officials.

Because the Mets were in Boston at the time, David Wright and Bobby Parnell watched Renfroe take batting practice and raved about his performance.

Does any one know to which team Renfroe has been assigned to? I scoured through the box scores of all Redsox minor league teams and did not find him listed any where. It will be great if there was a post draft signing article listing which team they were assigned to.

There is every possibility he won't be assigned to ANY team... and he will begin his work for the Sox in the Fall Instructional League.

If Renfroe does show up, it will likely be in either the GCL or Lowell.

Cuzittt - Thanks. Miles Head, Brandon Jacobs and Youninger are playing for GCL. It will be nice to see the rest of them get some game action even if it is only for few games before the fall leagues start.

Younginer has not shown up yet... he may or may not play with the GCL club. And, while I agree that it would be nice to see everyone, the reality is that not all of the signees will play this year. Especially with only 10 games left in the GCL season. [There is more time in the NYPL season... 18 games.]

So after the first 19 games at Lowell, Renfroe is sitting at .152/.222/.167 with 6 walks and 23 K's. Not a good start for young David.

I was surprised to see this. I went to the Lowell game on Sunday and came away very impressed with Renfroe's defense. Between innings he was showing off impressive arm strength and seemed very sure handed. Either I caught him on a good day, or yesterday was just an off day. Based on the scouting report I'd guess the latter. I had much higher hopes for his bat this year, but as a kid playing the entire year at 19 I'll give him a pass so far.

It's interesting to note the struggles of big bonus HS kids like Renfroe, Middlebrooks and Dent in Lowell if only b/c of the contrast with guys like Rizzo and Anderson who were assigned to Greenville at the same stage of development and who excelled at that level. It will binteresting to see whether the Sox development staff can work the same magic on Renfroe as they appear to be doing with guys like WMB and Tejeda.

Pulling the quote from the MiLB 5/15 game thread:

This guy was a 3rd round pick who fell for signability and got late 1st round money, the slot recommendation for 24 (Ceccinni and Coyle got 22 and 23). BA loved him, and ranked him as our #14 prospect before he'd played an inning. Callis opined he was better than WMB, IIRC.

Then he had an awful year at Lowell and fell off onto the depth chart.

On April 27 he was .217 / .265 / .283 in his first 49 PA. He got mentions in the April Fallers thread, no one caring (nor should they have) that he'd finished the month 3-9, 2B.

Since April 27, .333 / .370 / .490 in 54 PA. Which breaks down .351 / .385 / .405 until four games ago, and .286 / .333 / .929 in his last 4.

So this could easily be the big prospect resurrection story of the year. Stay tuned.
So he's had a three week streak showing some signs - figured it'd be interesting to see if he's straightened some things out and if it can continue, or if he returns to anonymity.

2012 YTD: Stats: 27G, 115 PA, .250/.348/.490

In case anybody is interested and hadn't seen this - here's a recent article from SoxProspects.com. He's also apparantly looking for adoption if anybody out there is willing and able to provide insight and updates on him...
