LOWELL, Mass. -- After a historic postseason and dynamic career, Davidson baseball senior Durin O'Linger has extended his career, signing a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox organization early Thursday morning.

The Tampa, Fla., native will begin with Rookie League affiliate the Lowell Spinners, in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Spinners began their 2017 campaign Monday, and are currently 1-3 on the young season.

O'Linger achieved national fame after tossing over 500 pitches during the course of the Atlantic 10 Championship, NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, and NCAA Super Regional in College Station, Texas. During that time span, he collected three wins and a save, striking out 21 across six contests. He was chosen as Co-MVP of the A-10 Tournament and named to the All-Championship team.

He finished the year with a team-best 3.16 ERA and a 9-3, tossing 116.2 innings and fanning 96 (5th all-time for single-season). O'Linger walked a league-low 29 batters, and exits Davidson ranked tied for 3rd in career shutouts (2), tied for 5th in single-season wins, tied for 7th in career ERA (3.44), ranks 9th in career wins (17), tied for 9th in walks per nine innings (2.5) and 10th in career Ks (195). He leaves the 'Cats as the winningest player (team wins) in school history at 138 wins.

O'Linger, a two-time A-10 All-Academic team selection and Magna Cum Laude graduate, was slated to begin pharmacy school this fall at the University of Florida.

This guy has a terrific name, and since it doubles as his actual role - Durable Roster Filler - he should be fun to follow for a few years while he eats innings up and down the ladder.

Got the win with 4 shutout innings (2 H, 5 K).

Final stats (Lowell/Salem)

15 G, 4-2 3.24 ERA , 58.1 IP, 58 H, 17 BB, 54 K, WHIP 1.29.

Pitched very well in Lowell (2.03 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) but had two rough starts as he jumped up 2 levels to Salem. Nice organizational arm. Could see him sticking around and starting off in Greenville or Salem. WIll be 24 in the fall.

Alex Spear with a nice piece on "The Pharmacist"

Over 17 days, O’Linger threw 502 pitches and 30 innings. Cries of pitcher abuse echoed from some corners, but the 23-year-old had been adamant before the start of the run with Davidson coach Dick Cooke: He wanted to milk every opportunity he had to pitch before he wrapped up his career and started pharmacy school at the University of Florida in the fall.

“He did not project at the professional level. He knew that. I knew that,” said Cooke. “He’s just intensely competitive. He gets out there and decides, ‘The moment I’m on the mound, I’m the best pitcher in the universe.’ That’s the approach he seems to take. We saw great evidence of that on a pretty big stage here at the end of our season.

Pitching reasonably well with the Drive (3.12 ERA in Greenville). Overall ERA is 4.57 between 3 levels (1 disaster in his start in Portland)

After a slow start, Durin settled in at Greenville in mid-July. With maybe one outing left in the season, he has a 4-1 Greenville record and has brought his Greenville ERA down to 2.59 in 48+ innings with more than a strikeout per inning. He has also lowered his overall ERA for the year to 3.79. Well under the radar pieces include a 1.69 ERA in four spot starts at Greenville this year, allowing just 4 ER in 21+ innings and a combined 2.31 ERA and 8-2 record in two seasons between Lowell and Greenville in 97+ innings with more than a strikeout per inning.
