more threads > fewer threads. No reason not to split the East finals from the West.

Don't know who will be facing the Cavs yet. Could be Cavs at Celtics, could be 'Zards at Cavs.

Game one is Wednesday. Do we know the rest of the schedule? I couldn't find it after a web search.

If they make Cleveland work for it, it would be great, but may the balls bounce our way so we can go get Fultz and call it A+ season all around.

Cleveland will have not played a game in over a week when it comes to Game 1. The Celtics are in rhythm and I think they have a good opportunity to win on Wednesday. After that, I'm not so sure. I just hope they come out, play hard, and compete. They'll have to shoot an unbelievably high percentage to give themselves a chance. Isaiah can be hidden on D a bit easier on JR Smith which is a plus. It seems like Kevin Love is a horrible matchup for us as well.

excited to see what Jaylen can do in this series. Huge game 7 for him that will get overshadowed by KO

One of Jaylen's finest games this year was that early November matchup where they nearly pulled it out while starting the unstoppable Zeller/Amir frontcourt. I think he has to play a lot with Amir being basically useless due to injury.

They will need Jaylen to play some Lebron D and bring the athleticism. Smart too, probably. A little AB too.

It's on IT, Rozier, AB, Smart, and Crowder to show how poor Irving, JR, and Korver are on D.

Confident Horford can play Thompson well. I'd play Oly over Amir, so he can guard Love (or Frye) on the perimeter.

If I'm the Cavs, I play big. and maybe even bench Love. DWill scares me if paired with Thompson.

Don't let James Jones get open looks, he can't do anything else.

Rebound
Defensive intensity
Protect the ball
(and try to get BronBron in foul trouble, impossible I know) At least make him shoot contested, don't let him drive.

Yes, Game 1 is going to be our best chance to steal a game. If we don't it could be a quick 4-game series.

Cavs favored by 3.5 on the road in the opener. I'd guess the games in Cleveland with be around 9.

Honestly at this point just don't double team LeBron. Let him score 40 points or whatever, I just don't want to see JR or Korver or Shumpert or Frye get going in this series by hitting open threes.

Er ... Larry Sanders? You mean the stoner they released a month ago?

The Cavs can't really "play big." Their only player over 6'-9" is Channing Frye, a Charmin-soft perimeter shooter. They're small and slow, a combo that Stevens' Cs would probably destroy ... if not for LeBron. :-(

I'll be thrilled if they play with high intensity and steal one game. Over the moon if they win two. Feels like we're playing with house money now. Just want them to give it there all and let the chips fall where they may.

Right now series odds are -550 Cavs / +425 Celts

Here's my question for the more seasoned gamblers - what if the Celts win game 1? Are we close to even odds if that's the case?

Thompson measured 6'-7.5" in bare feet at the draft combine, Love 6'-7.75." And neither has a great wingspan (Love 6'-11.75, Thompson 7'-1.25"). They're both roughly the same size as LeBron.

I guess playing all three of those guys counts as playing bigg-ish because they're all really strong and rugged, and all excellent rebounders, but as a team they definitely don't overwhelm you with size. As always, any sentence about them that involves the phrase "they scare me" needs to start and end with LeBron (and certainly needn't include Sanders...)

Not sure I agree about Love. Horford closes out well on the perimeter.

Thompson has a recent history of destroying us on the glass and we have no answers for him physically. When he is at the 5 and LeBron the 4 we have to go small.....this is when the Cavs have an enormous physical advantage with size against us.

These.

In NCAA terms, the Celtics made the Final Four. The season is a success. When the regular season ended it seemed that the Cavs were vulnerable. Rounds 1 and 2, especially Round 2, dispelled that notion for me. It's hard for me to imagine the Celtics pulling off a series upset, though I hope I'm wrong.

In the 3 games he played in Love has had games of 26 and 8, 30 and 15, and 15 and 16 against the Celtics this year.
Horford didn't play in one of those games (26/8 game).

The rebounds make me nervous, but that holds true for every game. The Celtics can't fucking rebound.

You may end up being right, but I'm hoping playoff Horford shows up and limits Love to some average numbers.

I have to be honest. Right now a series upset to me would be if we lose 4-2. I can't see us winning more than one game. Great run to this point.

Yes that would be great. The only problem is that if Horford is on Love who guards Thompson?

As you pointed out before, Love could be a key to this series. Thompson? Not so much. I'll take my chances with him burning us over Love 10 times out of 10.

Winning 2 games in this matchup would be incredible. Our best chance of stealing a game comes tomorrow. We have momentum and confidence plus our home court......while the Cavs have collected cobwebs for the past week. I will warn everyone to temper their emotions if we should win as once the Cavs adjust we really don't matchup well with them at all.

I'll call Cavs in 5 with us stealing game 1. If we lose tomorrow a sweep is all but certain imo. The beauty of winning game 1 is that we get a game 5 back here in Boston. I don't see it going any further than that though barring injuries to LeBron, Kyrie, or Tristan (maybe include Korver as he's crucial to them too).

I'm not worried about Thompson torching us scoring. It's on the glass. All he has to do is play the Marcin Gortat role of rebounding, setting screens, and protecting the rim and he's 100 times more talented than him.

That's 23 and 13 for a guy that averaged 19 and 11-an extra 4 points and 2 boards. Good numbers, yes, but not other-worldly based on his overall stats.

On TT: I'm not sure I would describe a 6'-7.75" player who can't shoot, dribble, hit FTs, or pass as "100 times more talented" than anyone. He's an excellent rebounder, and brings a lot of value on defense as a big man who can hold his own inside while also being quick and athletic enough to switch out onto the perimeter. But on offense he's pretty much only playable on a team like the Cavs who have two elite playmakers and a boatload of great shooters. He was a below-average player before LeBron and Love showed up in Cleveland; and over his career, he's been fairly neutral (by RPM) in terms of his on-court impact.

Against the Celtics, he's exactly what will constitute a mismatch. They have nobody to match up with him. And yes, I think he's much better at the things he needs to do in his role than Gortat and Gortat at times dominated on the glass.

Can one of you experts (said honestly, not sarcastically) give us the likely matchups on both ends of the court including down the roster as teams rotate in bench players?
It's fascinating to me how people talk about "matchups" like in this day and age of the NBA (well, except the Bulls) anyone is going to end up guarding anyone else in isolation for long stretches of the game.

In the last game - which was without Thompson - the Cavs destroyed the Cs by using LeBron in the ballhandler in the PnR to get the matchup he wanted. Here's an article (that's a little sloppy but it does have the correct information about some of the mismatches that follow: http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2017/04/lebron_james_boston_celtics_cl.html). It was particularly bad when Thompson wasn't on the floor because either Bradley or Smart or even IT4 was matched up on LBJ 1 on 1 or the Cs had to double leaving one of the shooters open. That worked whether LBJ was doing it front the top of the key or whether he was doing it from the elbow.

The Cs don't have a slew of options to defend it. As AB noted, they can defend it a bit better with Thompson in the game because at least there will be some help in the key. Maybe Brad decides to blitz the screen and hopes that the Cs can scramble to the shooters. Or maybe LBJ isn't having a good shooting game.

Or maybe the Cs can make the shooters - who are mostly non-defenders - pay on the other side of the court.

Maybe.

Matchups are very important especially in a playoff series though but you are correct in that it is now more of a TEAM personnel matchup than in decades past. Matchups turn Tristan Thompson into a fringe rotation player into a player that Brad must gameplan to keep off the offensive glass. It was the same with the Bulls when Rondo played.....dribble penetration and/or ball movement forces defensive rotations which doesn't allow for defenders to best position themselves for rebounds. It is why Tristan has torched us in the past and why Robin Lopez did prior to Rondo going down.

The Cavs ball movement places additional pressure on our rebounding which is a weakness anyway.....this is why the Tristan matchup is so dangerous. Korver on the floor is a matchup nightmare for many teams as their ball movement frees him up for 3's but having him on the floor also spaces it for Kyrie and LeBron to have the ability to iso and/or force double teams.

The Celtics give the switch about as easily as any team in the NBA. I'd live to hear Brad talk about why as it's a far cry from the KG/This days where the big would be responsible to extend the ball and rotate back. Chances are the overall increase in shooting quality is driving this but I'll be watching to see how we defend PnR because they have murdered us with it getting the matchups they want.

What is he "much better" at?

His blocks and rebounding numbers are very similar to Gortat--Gortat does a bit more on defensive glass, Thompson on offensive glass, but overall they are very close.

They've murdered everyone. I read an article (Simmons, I think?) About how the Cavs run the PnR with LBJ until they get the matchup they want.

My concern with fighting through it is LBJs efficency while driving. Chasing the PnR from behind crushed the Rockets, and could probably do some damage to the Warriors. LBJ, however, is just too good at driving to the hole.

It will be interesting to see what the Cavs do against IT. My guess is that LBJ could see significant time on him to try to take him completely out of the game. That would put Irving and Smith on Bradley and Crowder which would benefit the Celtics especially with Bradley. Horford and Love should match up against each other and then Amir on Thompson.

Their bench goes 4 deep based on minutes played per game.
Kyle Korver--19.5 min. He is shooting the lights out through 8 games. 48% from deep this postseason. Not much D.
Iman Shumpert--19 min. Not much scoring but very good defensively.
Deron Williams--16 min. He can run the offense and be a playmaker with the 2nd unit.
Channing Frye--14.3 min. 3 and D guy. Shooting 55% from 3 this postseason.

If their bench shoots like the have in the previous 2 series then it's going to be very tough to beat them.

Some hopeful news for us Jaylen fanboys that want to see him get more run.

http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2017/05/jaylen_brown_lebron_james_bost_1.html

"If Coach tells me, I'm going to be ready to guard whoever," Brown said. "If it's the waterboy, I'm guarding him, too. It doesn't matter to me."

It's unlikely that Stevens will call on Brown to defend Bobby Boucher in Game 2, but Brown will surely spend more time on James. The Celtics need as much size, strength and athleticism in that matchup as possible.

"There are a couple things about (Brown)," Stevens said. "I thought he played well, but I think it also was very evident that athletically he's just a special athlete. He can do things that other guys can't do, whether it's offensive rebounding or getting to the basket or whatever the case may be. We need some of those things, so I would expect him to continue to play a large role for us in this series."

I would really love to see a breakdown of the Cave offensive possessions based on who was covering LeBron. My eyes told me that the only time the C's D had any level of success is when Brown was matched up against him. Crowder, Horford, and Kelly are all not quick enough and guards are just too small to match up. My lying eyes tell me that Brown should almost play minute for minute against Lebron.

Also I am very much less inclined to go two bigs. I think it is more important to have floor spacing on offense and athletes that can close on the Cavs very good shooting on defense.

Lastly there was never a point last night where I felt like the C's couldn't get the shot they wanted - they got plenty they just missed all of them in the 1st half. I did feel like they started the game with low energy and Thomas in particular seemed to be stuck in mud on offense. IF they can turn it up a notch energy wise and IF they can stick their open shots - they can still steal a game or two this series.

P.S. - It would also help if Al could give you something close to what he gave you in the first two series.
