RIP. But trading him to move up from 9 (Samaki Walker) to 6 (Antoine Walker) in the 1996 draft and also get Dallas' 1997 1st (6th overall, Ron Mercer) was a hell of a deal. I feel like teams are too smart to make deals like that now.
As someone who has experienced his doctor utter those three dreaded words, it really hits home when I hear about someone whose treatment after “You’ve got cancer” wasn’t successful. I always admired the effort Montross put in as a Celtic. Even though he left this world at 52, it sounds like he had a very successful post NBA life.
Back in college, when one with a little knowledge of how to do things, you could do anything that you wanted on the internet. I used this immense power to argue with Knicks fans while posing as Montross. I had this massive backstory written, including details about my bromance with Cherokee Parks.

First, this is terrible.
Second, he had a really nice rookie season, 10 ppg 7.3 rpg. . He was never close to that good again, and I never really understood why.

Shaq and Montrose got into it in Orlando during his rookie year. Shaq ended up on his ass (assist from Sherman Douglas) and Montrose just stood there looking at him.

RIP to Eric. He took a beating for underachievement but it was not his fault the Celtics did a poor job at evaluation and he joined a misfit team in the last season of Chris Ford coaching followed by the ill-fated ML Carr tenure. Montross was the classic finished product out of college who flashes potential in his first season but does not improve from there. In any case he is not near the list of top X amount of busts in the draft and he played hard, regardless of skill level.
This sucks. I'm a Carolina fan and this is way too similar to what happened with Wake. Eric was really involved in charitable endeavours, especially with pediatric cancer patients at the UNC hospital. He was the color commentator on the THSN broadcasts, and it was reported in March that he was stepping away from broadcasts because he had cancer (I'm pretty sure the news was leaked prematurely, much like Wake's diagnosis) and many of the details were kept private until news came out that he passed today. I had the fortune of meeting him at a game in Syracuse a number of years ago and he couldn't have been nicer. RIP Big Grits.
