Poor lad, looked like Salah had lost control of the ball and wasn't gonna get a clean shot off. I guess he felt he had to make the tackle though.

At work all I saw was a Straight Red was given. Whappen?
Breakaway and Salah had nobody between him and the keeper. Salah was a bit off balance, but Wan-Bissaka made a little more contact, Salah went down and the red was shown. It was outside the box, so no penalty.

Zaha with an amazing nash doon the wing, beats a player, plays a top class ball into the box and it goes past about four Palace players. They don't deserve you Wilfried.

Feel sorry for Palace. They've played well. They need to lock Benteke in the basement though. Doubt he'll get 10 league goals this season.

If someone offered me 10 goals or “door #2” I’m taking 10 goals from Benteke.

Hodgson still keeps talking up his other contributions, and I’m not knowledgeable enough to know if that is really the case or a coach supporting his player, but he’s also said that he’s had to basically re-coach him from scratch (like Roy Halladay going back to A ball) because he’s been so poorly coached and reliant on his physical gifts. I can see that kind of too.

Not to make this thread all about Palace players that struggled at Liverpool, but...

I remember him scoring a couple of sick goals for Liverpool (as well as a few against us for multiple teams). I also remember him missing 3 or 4 times when he was put absolutely clean though on the goalkeeper, which inspired this meme.

He obviously wasn't the right style of player for Klopp's system, but it surprised me how much he's struggled for Palace. Would think the setup would play to his strengths. He just can't seem to get out of his own way at this point.

Just catching up on the game - I can empathize with Palace fans who feel the ref swayed this match, but as a Liverpool supporter, I think the result was earned and am ecstatic to see the Reds take 3 points from an always tricky opponent.

Wan-Bissaka was fantastic, the red card notwithstanding. Liverpool were clearly not ready for him to be so influential in the first half and had to adjust. It will be exciting to watch his development.

And Gareth Southgate was on hand for the same reason, I suppose. How often does he curse out his predecessors for not tying down Zaha?

Edit: Also wanted to mention Gomez, who looked very solid. Last season at RB he would have 1 or 2 or 3 mental lapses per game, often leading to prime chances. But whatever combination of VVD, Alisson, maturity, and comfort at CB definitely has him looking competent. With Matip and Lovren getting injured as often as they do, I think Gomez could get 1500+ minutes this season.

Result aside it was a heavily exaggerated fall in the box and I wouldn’t begrudge any Palace fan who isn’t sitting well with it. Salah is beloved because so much of the media is pro Liverpool but many other players would be put in the crosshairs for jamming his toe in the ground to fall over. Salah knew it too imo you could see it in his reaction. Certainly if that had happened against Liverpool there would be a riot about VAR and diving all week.

I agree with what was said that that kind of challenge exists in a weird area. But if that’s how it is going to be called we are going to see a ton more penalties across the league and I hardly think we will see that

I realize this is said from a completely unbiased observer who is coming from a position of love (I mean it's not like your favorite striker has never made a meal of a challenge in the box and actually been booked for it against Monaco in the Champions League or anything...) but I'd actually say that Salah is beloved because he tends to stay up in situations like today, trying to keep his feet "like a good English lad" and it will be interesting to see if he starts to go down more when fouled in the box if his popularity takes a dip outside of Liverpool fandom.

This would be a useful reply if I had said only Salah dives or that no City players have ever dived. Nonetheless, I didn’t and your example is strange because Aguero suffered more contact in that incident than Salah here and was carded for his effort anyway. Also, we are just months removed from Salah earning his own yellow for diving and being called out for it by his own manager.

I certainly don’t think he’s a serial diver and agree that he’s a tricky player who tries to keep his feet. He often dribbles in traffic and doesn’t flop over at the first sign of contact. In this specific instance, he made an awful lot out of two incidents in the same match and that’s not particularly like him. I think he’d come under more scrutiny if it had been, say, Benteke earning these two calls.

Also important to note the player fouling him in the first incident hasn’t really earned the benefit of the doubt from the refs over his time in the Premiership. While in the second the player came from behind, clipped Salah and got no ball. That one is red all day even if it’s Benteke on the break and VVD clips him.

I apologize for my straw man just didn’t think your characterization of why Salah was well liked should be allowed to stand when at least so far he’s to my mind earned the accolades.

Liverpool fans are cool with Salah going to ground but lost their minds last year when Kane “dived” when Karius tripped him...

I think Southgate was there also to catch Joe Gomez, who's quietly been solid in place of Lovren the first 180 minutes of the season.

Alisson makes a world of difference. His distribution is phenomenal and he actually set up his wall properly on the Milivojević FK, something Liverpool keepers did maybe a handful of times last season.
