What does this mean for Jimmy G, if Romo ends up in Houston?

NFL stunner: Texans trade QB Brock Osweiler AND a 2018 second-round pick to Cleveland for the Browns to take Osweiler’s $16M salary of Houston’s books, per league sources. The move clears out millions in salary-cap space for Houston to intensify efforts to sign former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, per sources. To be exact, Houston saves $16 million in cash and $10 million against their cap this season. The Texans also will get the Browns’ fourth-round pick this year in exchange for their own 6th-round pick. So Cleveland gets Osweiler’s contract, a 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-round pick, and Houston gets Cleveland’s 2017 fourth-round pick, saves $10 million in salary-cap space and $16 million in cash. Cleveland is not committed to keeping Osweiler and is likely to try to trade him, per sources. If so, it would turn into a basketball-like trade in which NBA teams routinely trade contracts to get them off their books; only it rarely, if ever, happens in the NFL. It’s hard to remember in the salary-cap era another team when a team traded a contract to get it off its books. But Houston was so anxious to rid itself of Osweiler and move on to its next quarterbacking chapter that it is giving Cleveland extra picks to take him and his contract. The Browns headed into this free-agent signing period with over $100 million worth of salary-cap space and would struggle to spend it all. Now they can devote some of it to Osweiler’s contract and acquiring extra draft picks from Houston. But this is one of the most, if not the most, creative trade in NFL history.

Schefter is saying that they are just taking Osweiler off the Texans' hands so the deck is cleared for Romo. Not intending to play him.

Edit: "They" = Cleveland

Looks like Alshon's market wasn't quite what he thought it would be- Rappaport just tweeted he's signing with Philly for 1 year, $14 million.

Wow. I wonder if we kicked the tires on that. I know he's a different receiver than Cooks and older/more injured and costlier this year, but having a potential No. 1 while keeping Butler paired with Gilmore would've been something for the year.

I think this increases the odds of a Jimmy g trade. This is the kind of outside the box thinking the nfl needs more of. I can't see them preferring a Qb because of the shiny new toy mentality over Jimmy g. The 12th pick and a 2/3 next year should get it done.

That trade seems really smart for CLE. There's almost no way for them to allocate all of this year's massive cap room in a way that will still be helpful by the time they are ready to compete. This lets them stockpile cost-controlled assets in the future in exchange for cash that was likely to be wasted just reaching for the salary floor.

So did CLE just pay $16M for a 2nd round draft pick in '18?
I keep seeing this and I dont get it.

Browns arent competing anytime soon, but they have a salary cap floor to reach. Does it make more sense to spend $16 million on players that wont be there when they're finally competitive?

I'm OK with this trade for the Browns.

The Process comes to the NFL: acquiring salary cap assets and draft picks while giving up nothing but time and cash.

Mingo was second on the Pats in special teams snaps per Pats Pulpit. Have to replace those snaps.

Indeed. Clearly not the most important part of the roster, but as we well know around here complete football wins games and that very much includes special teams. Of course, BB seems always to be ahead of the curve on that front so IBWT.
