Oh shit.

Jeff Passan: Sources: Yankees making progress on a trade for Giancarlo Stanton. One source cautioned nothing done. Another was confident it’s moving toward that. Either way, momentum for Stanton to Yankees is significant.

I think it's the reverse actually, Gary Denbo knows NY's farm system very well and so MIA will likely be getting some real gems if this happens.

The rumor on Twitter (from @jomboy, who had the Girardi being fired news early) is Clint Frazier, Jordan Montgomery and Ellsbury. That would leave NY's rotation thin even assuming they resign Sabathia, but maybe that means they're ready to start testing German and Sheffield and on down the line.

Sources: The Yankees recognize they’re in a position of significant strength right now. Same with Giancarlo Stanton, who can decide exactly where he wants to go and force a deal. And the Marlins ... well, the Marlins are trying to figure out how to best salvage an absolute mess.

I can't believe the Marlins would take Ellsbury back who is owed $22 million per year for the next 3 years.

Well, presumably NY would be taking the whole Stanton deal which I don't think SF or STL was quite willing to do, plus MIA doesn't have many choices at this point, it seems. Who knows, maybe this is all a ploy to try to get the Dodgers to swoop in.

Ok so maybe Miami will take on some salary. I just can't believe Stanton is going to end up in NY.

He also has a full no trade clause. I have a heard time thinking he would approve the trade. It’s one thing to be in Stanton’s position trying to leave a non-contender, it’s another to be Ellsbury being asked to waive it going to a rebuilding team. And Ellsbury has zero incentive to approve it from what I see in his contract.

Gardner would be the guy to go back I'd assume. He'd open up a starting spot in the outfield and sheds $11.5 million.

I hate life. Judge Stanton Harper...I’m going to drink now
Heh, I have to confess I just made a lineup with those three in the middle, pretty unlikely to actually happen (and Harper wouldn't be until 2019 obv), but yowza:

Torres 2B
Judge DH
Harper LF
Stanton RF
Sanchez C
Bird 1B
Didi SS
Hicks CF
Andujar 3B

Holy crap. I’d do that deal.

All deals involving Stanton have to include Ellsbury.

MIA fans are going to hate Jeter more than the previous owner and the season hasn’t started yet.

There was talk a couple of days ago that if Ellsbury was in the deal, NY would cover some of his salary and MIA would agree to release him so he could try to catch on wherever, and obviously he'd still get his full salary. Not sure if that makes sense, but it might be a way to get Ellsbury to agree to the deal and get him off NY's roster.

And it will be a bargain because Stanton is narrowing the market. Full NTC should be banned imo.
I mean, what should be banned is allowing new owners to buy a team who have to immediately start selling off assets because they're so deep in debt. How did that even happen?

The term an official with knowledge of the Yankees' interest in Giancarlo Stanton used is a "stalking horse." To do a deal, the Yankees would need a sweetheart trade in which they would likely need to shed payroll in the form of Jacoby Ellsbury, Chase Headley, Starlin Castro or Brett Gardner, while not giving up top prospects to acquire Stanton.

Craig Mish--Help me out guys are any of these deals guaranteeing Yankees are under the luxury tax. Only way this is happening. They told the Marlins this.

Two hours of twitter posts to arrive at the same conclusions we all already knew. Unless the Yankees can be under the LT this year, Stanton isn’t happening.

Despite the above hurdles, the Yankees still remain the only realistic option for Stanton if LA cannot also shed significant salary

Way it was described to me is #Yankees were not heavily interested in Stanton, but if #Marlins have no place else to turn, have to move as much of his $ as possible and do deal to keep NYY in line to be under ’18 luxury tax threshold, how can they ignore his talent?

If they can't make a deal with either, does the possibility remain of Stanton reconsidering his list or has that ship sailed by some official rule?

Castro + Headley isn't enough. The rumors of $50 going back to the Giants doesn't make sense if the Yankees are giving them $34m back + a tradable asset in Castro. That's probably why they're insisting on Ellsbury.
