Didn't the Bruins have to give their approval for this? Is there anything else to this but the Bruins saving a few bucks?

I believe the loophole through which we're getting a pick from Edmonton for a former employee already relieved of duties has been closed.

Ahaha what a disaster. Fire the best coach in your team's history and your bitter rival FIRES THEIR COACH to sign him (I know Therrien was on his way out anyway).

Why follow this team?

Even Pierre Gauthier does this. Therrien 2.0 had worn out his welcome, so the Bruins do Bergevin a solid and hand him one of the top 3 head coaches in the league.

So the Canadiens have now fired Therrien twice in season, and both times replaced him with Julien?

People are seriously worried about this? The Canadiens issues right now are offensive. Julien is not going to fix that. This was not a smart move by Montreal. Don't get me wrong, Julien is a very good coach but once again he's not the right coach for Montreal right now. They already play that defensive style well. Maybe I will be wrong but I don't think I will be.

Any truth to Felger just stating that a huge reason the Canadiens hired Julien was because he speaks french?
There have been stories in the past where fans up there have not liked a coach because he didn't speak French. I forget who it was, I think it was an interim coach before Therien was hired.

Yup - Randy Cunneyworth faced protests in the streets of Montreal because he didn't speak French as interim head coach.

The xenophobia is strong - though one could argue we've far surpassed it :fonz:

The fact that you're not worried has me more worried than literally any other part of this whole thing.

They have had a lot of French speaking coaches, so you could see why he would believe they have a preference for them. Going back to the 70's there are only one or two coaches who were not born in Quebec or played in Quebec for an extended period of time.

What, did Felgykins just notice his name is Claude Julien?

Coaches have to be bilingual or team legends (I'm pretty sure Kirk Muller would have been fine), but this is about getting no respek out of the room more than anything else. That Julien can parlez-vous is just icing on the cake.

I think Julien is a good coach but my god, people around here act like he's the Bill Belichick of hockey and that drives me nuts. He's a very good coach but he's not one of the top ever imo.

Just because it's worked form PIttsburgh, twice, every time now thinks a mid season coaching change is a good idea.

This isnt a great fit for the Habs, francophoning it in aside.

But next Habs game at TD should be a hoot

Boy could this make the team look stupid. But, hey, we are on a winning streak!

Yeah, at this point, Sweeneely are banking on the idea that Cassidy is a better coach for this Bruins team than Claude, because if they come crashing back to earth post-bye week, they're going to look amazingly stupid. The one way to make it worse would be to go down after a GFIN-level trade that sees some of Carlo, McAvoy, JFK, Senyshyn, and a high draft pick leave the organization in the name of being a one-and-done in the playoffs.

The Canadiens apparently asked for permission to speak to Claude on Sunday. Sounds like Vegas also asked and Florida poked around but may not have asked for immediate permission.

I'm kinda torn. Claude's a good coach and will improve the Habs so part of me wishes they strong armed the Habs and tried to steer Claude towards Vegas or someone else. That's a shitty thing to do to Claude though. He deserved to have all options available and to pick his next opportunity. And once they made the decision to fire Claude, they shouldn't be scared of him landing with a rival.

At least the Canadiens traded away Subban because he couldn't get along with Therrien before firing Therrien.

I'm not happy about this. Claude's an improvement for them. I never want to see them improve.

I wish Claude much personal happiness and many jaunty hats, but I hope his team rapidly sinks to the bottom of the standings and never makes the playoffs again.

I know some day I'll be watching a Bruins-Canadiens game in which one of the Montreal cheap-shotters does his thing, or Claude bitches to a ref about some imagined Bruins infraction, and I'll shout at the TV "Fuck you, Claude!"

And I'll feel bad. For about a nanosecond. He's a Hab now.
