Is it possible for the Cs to add two of Butler/George/Griffin/Hayward this offseason?

That'll have a big effect on teams trying to carve out max room. At the very least you'll have to shed about $1.4 million more in salary if you intend to go after a max guy.

The back of your computer
Updating smastroyin's numbers, using a $99mm cap:

BOS has the following guys with guaranteed contracts:
Horford $27,734,405
Bradley $8,808,989
Crowder $6,796,117
Thomas $6,261,395
Brown $4,956,480
Smart $4,538,020
Rozier $1,988,520
Jackson $650,000 guaranteed

Total is $61,733,926 guaranteed

BOS also has the following guys non-guaranteed:
Zeller $8,000,000
Mickey $1,471,382
Jackson $734,750 non-guaranteed

And the following cap holds:
Johnson $15,600,000
Jerebko $9,500,000
Olynyk $7,735,033
Young $2,803,507
Yabusele $2,247,480
Zizic $1,645,200
Green $1,471,382

Assuming BOS cuts Zeller and Mickey, keeps Jackson and renounces everyone else but Yabusele and Zizic, that gives BOS $66,361,356.

Cap hold for the #3 pick is $5,600,000 IIRC. Roster holds up to 12 are $815,615 each (three are needed here). So now BOS's cap number is $74,408,201. That only leaves BOS $24,591,799 under the cap. The max contract for Hayward/Griffin is $29,700,000.

If Yabu agrees to remain overseas for another year, BOS would then be $26,839,279 under the cap. Still not enough.

Once #5 is signed for slot ($4,704,500), BOS would then be $28,550,394 under the cap and could sign Hayward/Griffin for $29,366,009, which accounts for the roster hold on the open slot.

At cap, BOS would have Horford, Zizic's roster hold, #3, Crowder, Hayward, Brown, Bradley, Smart, Thomas, Rozier, DJax and one min roster hold.

ESPN Radio this morning was talking about how Cavs players are telling George and Butler that they don't want to go there.

Dan Dakich rips PG, saying "People around the country think he's better than people that watch him everyday. He's a talker, and his teammates laugh."

With the Cavs rocky situation, I think Danny should pounce and roll the dice on George. Take the gamble that George likes the culture and atmosphere in Boston and likes playing for Brad Stevens. If they go back to the ECF and LBJ leaves for LA the path to the Finals is wide open. Is LA worth giving up the amount of money he'll need to?
One other factor that nobody dares to dream about......except maybe Danny who is not afraid to dream. If Gilbert really is wearing thin on LeBron a certain someone will be a FA next summer and the Lakers won't have George there to entice him......but we will. Just sayin.

I do wonder about about this too but didn't want to get shouted down. There are only so many ready made super team options. And Lebron clearly *loves* Brad.

They'd have to open up a ton of cap space to do that. In your scenario, is PG the only addition this summer?

For this scenario yes the only major addition. Does #3 and Avery get it done? Crowder can be useful in a smallball lineup as a 3/4 combo with George but in the big picture of adding LeBron his salary can be cleared by next summer as his minutes would evaporate.

It shouldn't be very difficult to create the necessary space assuming Olynyk isn't here but we'd be in big time taxpaying range that Wyc has approved in the past for a legitimate Championship contender.

Edit: Ugh nevermind it wouldn't be possible to open up space without also moving Horford. This is why I usually stay out of these silly dream scenarios. Carry on.

So it looks like that in the end the Cs didn't have that much interest int for Butler:
Per Zach Lowe at ESPN
"Boston has danced around Butler for almost a year now, and would not include the No. 3 pick in any package for him as the draft approached, sources say. Other reports suggest they refused to offer next year's Nets pick, or the Lakers-Kings pick they snagged from Philly in the Markelle Fultz deal.
Boston apparently just didn't want Butler at cost. There is no other conclusion to make at this point. Nabbing Butler now would have complicated its efforts to carve out Gordon Hayward-sized space under the deflated $99 million cap, though they would (depending on the package) have still been only one Avery Bradley/Jae Crowder salary dump away. Potential free agents might have been turned off playing alongside two ball-dominant guys in Butler and Isaiah Thomas. They still have time to work a deal for Paul George. Dealing for a star after filling their cap space is much easier mechanically; ESPN.com has already reported that George likes the idea of playing alongside Hayward."
So does this indicate that Danny is not actually interested in adding two high-priced stars this offseason or was this a timing issue (its pretty clear that signing Hayward first, then trading for a second star is more feasible)? Or perhaps Danny prefers George and knows he can be had for even cheaper. I still think its pretty shocking that the it seems like Butler could have been acquired for a package that would have preserved both the 2018 picks and Danny still passed...

Getting a FA needs to happen first.
