Why exactly are the Knicks giving up Porzingis again? Phil has 1 year left. Last time I checked, the zinger is pretty young and it's safe to say he'll play past 1 more year

Yes, this. Back the Brinks truck up to MSG if you think it will help of course, but Zinger is going nowhere.

It's so tempting to day dream about him though as he is everything the Cs need. He scores from anywhere on the court and provides a paint presence in both ends all in one 7'3" young package.

Maybe we do have to think about the Zinger level players: we will need something dramatic to happen to the roster to really compete. The scrappy little guys who bring the lunchpail every day are great, and can define a culture, but long athletic guys that can score in bunches are needed too.

I'm really going to miss Phil. I thought he had at least one more year left, but I guess that the combination of him falling asleep during some lottery pick's workout and his very public trade discussions for Porzingis were the straws that broke the camel's back. Mostly I'll miss his arrogance, his inflexibility with regard to the triangle and his insistence that Porzingis was too reliant on shooting a three ("That's sometimes just a cheap way to score points.").

Knicks fans will be rightfully thrilled, but maybe they should've done this before drafting? Maybe they would've picked Ntilikina over Dennis Smith Jr., but that sure seemed like a triangle-focused Phil pick.

Word on the street is that Jackson gave a him or me ultimatum wrt Carmelo yesterday. Hence timing.

It's kind of a lose-lose right---you have perhaps the worst GM we've seen in a couple decades alienating your two best players, and you have a useful but overpaid ego player who is a complete distraction.

I think a quality owner would get rid of both of them, bring in a serious basketball president, and start over. But the Knicks have James Dolan running things, so it's probably more likely he books a reality show about the team than that he gets a quality basketball guy to take over this mess.

They should just hire the Kardashians and have them make moves for reasons totally unrelated to basketball ability. They might end up with 2 guard in the post because he looks good in a hat or five 4's on court at same time because Khloe likes bigs but they'd probably do as good as Phil.

I don't blame him, but if you were Masai would you go near this mess? I guess you never know what motivates someone but this feels like a no-win for an exec so long as Dolan is there
I guess it depends what his alternatives are. Dolan is obviously the fedora-wearing elephant in the room, but other than Noah, their aren't too many bad contracts on the roster. Dolan plus the microscope of NYC may be enough to put him off, but the on-court situation isn't as bad as it might seem.

And apologies for cross-posting, but I gotta say, I'm surprised and disappointed that JD & the Straight Shot hasn't been mentioned in the Most Important American Band thread.

Oh that would be great. What would've been a palatable way to get rid of Melo, given his NTC?
ESPN reporting that Jackson wanted the Knicks to buy out the last two years of his contract, for which he is guaranteed $54 million.

Dolan must have looked at him like he'd gone crazy when Jackson advocated for that.

LOL, they're paying Melo $54M if they keep him, and basketball-wise he's mostly useless. Maybe in a buyout you can get a reasonable discount. Dolan can borrow the money and pay debt service instead of paying Melo every month. Interest rates are still low.

What could Carmelo Anthony get as a free agent this summer? I know guys are generally adverse to giving up guaranteed money but even if he took a 50 cents on the dollar buyout he'd probably still come out way ahead in the long run plus he's have the flexibility to go play with his buddy Paul in Houston or go relax on the beach with LAL or LAC.

Whoa....why wouldn't the Knicks do this?

"Kentucky head coach John Calipari reached out to knicks through intermediaries to express interest in the Knicks presidency, per ESPN league sources. The Knicks do not have interest in Calipari at the moment, per league sources. Presumably, Calipari would want to coach as well if he took over as president. The Knicks parted ways with president Phil Jackson earlier this week. Current GM Steve Mills is handling the club's day-to-day operations and is expected to lead them through free agency."

I know the Knicks are dumb but they probably aren't "turn over your organization to John Calipari" dumb... right?

Spoken by someone who clearly hasn't paid much attention to the Dolan regime.

He'll never leave Kentucky - he's just angling for more money or a contract extension like every CBK offseason when these stories leak out.

Agreed on the Browns and the Lions; both terrible, miserable teams, but there are 33% more playoff teams in the NBA. Plus, the Knicks should be able to attract talent, unlike the Browns and Lions.

The Rangers seem to be well run and have had decent success lately. Why does Dolan seem to be a decent hockey owner but a terrible basketball owner?

Dolan's success with the Rangers is due to the fact that Glen Sather runs the team with little to no interference. I really think that Dolan was trying to duplicate that approach with the Phil Jackson hiring (former successful coach turned executive).

where I was last at
Last night when I saw that Cal wanted the Knicks prez job, I had two thoughts.

Cal was getting tired of schmoozing kids and he wanted a nice paycheck to be a dealmaker in mid-town

and

the NCAA was about to drop the hammer on Kentucky.

The one-and-done was the staple of Cal's recruiting success and that is going to be taken away in the very near future. Cal in NY with the love that those former UK kids have for him could make things very interesting.

Yeah, guys like Calipari always leave before the hammer arrives. He knows his business model might be taking a massive hit soon. He also may be bored and want something new.
