OK, let's suppose AZ is willing to offer 3/70 with an opt out after year 2 - their version of being creative. Also assume Sox have offered 5/100.

JD and Boras might well prefer the AZ offer, even with less guaranteed money - we've often seen instances where players are willing to bet on themselves in the hopes of a bigger long-term payoff. The fact that JD has not signed with AZ yet may be an indication that their offer is not even to this level (yet).

From the Red Sox standpoint: you're willing to go 5/100. But would also go 3/65? If so, why not offer the 5/100 with an opt out after year 3 if you think that AZ is trying to sneak in with an offer like that? At worst, it's still 5/100, or 3/65, but if you'd be willing to do either at this point, why not? Sure, you're losing the potential upside/surplus value on years 4 and 5 if he opts out. But still a worthwhile deal.

I was typing my post (above) as the tweet from Heyman got posted. I will be interested to see if an opt-out is part of any package - Boras seems to be a big fan of these, and I think it was critical to the Hosmer deal with the Padres. One benefit of an opt-out form the team's standpoint could be to keep the AAV lower (as I wouldn't go as high on AAV with an opt-out).

If they got to a point where a deal really is imminent, it's extremely doubtful DD held firm to that $20m/per figure.

If anything expect a heavy blink, with an opt out, and hopefully at the trade off of less total years (which if I was rooting for a JDM signing I'd honestly prefer).

I believe your anti-DD bias is coloring your opinion, Mike. I'm betting that there's been little blinking on the Sox part. We'll know soon.

Thats my fear. Hosmer actually moved the chains slightly in favor of Boras. But lets wait and see

Over the past four seasons, JDM has been as effective a hitter as Stanton or Harper, albeit without the defense, or even Ortiz. In other words, we're getting a top-5 hitter that replaces our missing power, and we are paying less than the Yankees did for the same caliber hitter (albeit one that is two years older).

Given the baffling deal the Padres just signed for Hosmer, whose likely performance is somewhere between Wil Myers and Mitch Moreland, If we get JDM for 5/125 or 6/150, I'll be happy.

I almost forgot what it feels like to read up on a fairly big bit of sox news. Warts and all, i’m pumped for baseball. Interested to see the terms.

I’m guessing it’s a 5 year deal guaranteed with close to the original money offered with a player option and some built-in production bonuses.
