A four-year D-I college starter, Betts wasn't ranked on any of the leading draft coverage sites' "top prospects" lists heading into June -- not even Baseball America's Top 500 -- and other than his power stroke his SoxProspects.com scouting profile isn't exactly flattering:

Solid frame and strong build. Filled out especially in his lower body, with limited physical projection remaining. Hits from a square stance with his hands high. Long stride with slight leg lift. Uppercut swing plane. Above-average raw power. Fringe-average bat speed, struggles with velocity. Below-average pitch recognition skills, struggles to pick up spin. Lot of swing and miss in his game. Slightly below-average range at third base. Solid-average arm strength.

Yet two months into his first pro season he's quietly put together a .283/.340/.500/.840 line at Lowell, including a team-high 8 HR (t-4th in the NYPL) and 30 RBI. However there is indeed a "lot of swing and miss in his game" with 55 K in 203 PA (27.1%) and 17 BB.

There's nobody blocking him in Greenville right now, but if anything prevents a late-season promotion there it'll be that strikeout rate. Nearly half his walks (8) have come in his last 15 games, during which he's scuffling with the stick (.231/.328/.404/.732 in 61 PA), and those BBs are the only thing keeping his OBP respectable over that stretch. His whiff rate is correspondingly lower as well (13, or 21.3 %)

Still trying to hunt down that info, as well as his exact bonus. I might not have it until the next BA Prospect Handbook comes out over the winter.

Forgot to mention that Betts was a late addition to the New York-Penn League All-Star Team. He'll join Spinners teammates Danny Mars, Mauricio Dubon & Carlos Pinales in Brooklyn on Tuesday night.
