That's pretty irregular. A high schooler debuting in Lowell. He must be showing some tremendously advanced stuff.
Also pretty irregular/not humanly possible: "In his first five weeks at the academy, Groome, now 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, added 18 pounds of muscle."

Don't know how much I trust that article.

Yeah, elsewhere I saw him listed as 220 around the draft, so that is quite a difference, and the almost 4 lbs of muscle a week thing is extremely dubious, even with puberty/growth spurts as possible causes.

It's not actually 18 pounds of just muscle. It's just an expression. It's not particularly hard to put on 20 solid pounds in a couple months at that age with good genetics and time to devote to the project.

Over the last 8 games, Rusney Castillo is 16/34 .471/.471/.617. He's had at least 2 hits in 6 of the last 8 games, including a 3/5 and 4/4.

Aneury Tavarez is slashing .317/.365/.460 in Portland, with 23bb/48k. The bb rate is at a career high and k rate at a career low. He is 24 and repeating the league. He's a fringe guy like Henry Ramos who is doing ok in Pawtucket, but has a brutal 8/40 bb/k ratio.

Ockimey in the 2nd half: .167/.296/.367 with 20bb and 40k in 140PA. Walking less and striking out a bit more than the first half, but mostly being held back by a .167 avg. Kyri Washington has also come back to earth.

Over the last 33 innings, Johnson has 32k/11bb. The previous 33 innings, 28k/22bb. Walks have always been an issue with him, even when he was dominating.

Tate Matheny is hitting .312/.353/.442 but isn't exactly young for Greenville and his 20bb/70k ratio isn't inspiring, nor is his 16/26 in sb. Chavis is still striking out way too much with 40k in 132 PA in the 2nd half.

Lorenzo Cedrola is following up a .320/.420/.415 line with a .325/.406/.417 line as an 18 year old in the GCL. 9bb/19k in 129 PA. 24th round pick Hunter Smith has put up a 0.47era with 25k and 1bb in 19.1ip of work against competition way too young for him.

Brandon Workman since his second cb stint: 2g, 3ip 2h 0bb 3k.
Everlouis Lozada is hitting .302/.399/.411 27bb/44k in 209 PA as a 17 year old in the DSL2. Teammate Pedro Castellanos is 18 and slashing .301/.366/.460 in 189 PA with 13bb/16k.

Rusney Castillo is having his best stretch ever (in the US). 12 for his last 21, 4-for-4 last night. Bears watching, I suppose.
I was thinking that too. It is encouraging for sure as he is 18-42 for a .429 average over his last 10. He also only has 2 strikeouts that whole time too. However, hes still showing almost no power or patience as seen by his zero home runs or walks during that stretch.

It would be good to hear from someone who knows the DSL - maybe bosox79 - as to who the best prospects are there as of this time. In fact, is there anyone of much worth down there after the international signing voidings the Sox were penalized for?

I only go off the box scores and all those players are so far away they aren't even really worth watching. I'd guess those 2 are the ones worth watching, no one else looks remotely interesting as far as slash lines and age.

Fourth round pick Bobby Dalbec 3-5 with a double, three run jack and 4 rbi. SSS but the bat looks legit so far. Glad they went over slot to get this kid.

Devers 3-6 tonight with 2 doubles and 2 RBI raising his average to a season high .274. Also 5th round pick Mike Shawaryn with a nice little pro debut in Lowell with 4 k's in 2IP with a hit and a walk. no earned runs. Would be nice to get something from one of our higher draft picks with regards to pitchers for once.

2014 number 3 draftee Jake Cosart is having a great year as a reliever. His combination of great fastball but control issues reminds me of just traded Pat Light

And tonight debuted in Salem and absolutely dominated. TINSTAPP is often modified to say it goes double that TINSTAARPP, but he's exciting right now, along with Ben Taylor at Portland.

Also my favorite sleeper prospect as the next Daniel Nava is Danny Mars, who was 6-7 with 3 2B and a 3B today to raise his average to .293.

I don't want to cause a riot, but Remy is signing autographs at McCoy between games. Pawtucket cruised to a 6-0 win in the opener, Haley tossing a 7 inning CGSO.

O'Sullivan O'SUCKED his was to 5 runs on 6H 1W over 3.2 innings in game 2 for the Paw Sox. Meterparel is the stadium announcer today.

On the plus side, we all won free Burger King fries, so I got that going for me.

Henry Owens 6ip 3h, 0r, 4bb, 7k. He has been pitching better but is still walking way too many batters.

The Sea Dogs have 20 hits and it's the top of the 6th inning. 10 hits off of each of the first two pitchers. Can't say I've ever seen that before.

Nice outing by Ball tonight
Everything one needs to know about Ball is in this blurb:

"Red Sox LHP Trey Ball, Class A Advanced Salem: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K -- The No. 14 Red Sox prospect turned in one of his best starts of the season Wednesday at Myrtle Beach and is on his way to what could be his best month of the season. Ball's seven strikeouts were a season high and his most since fanning nine for Salem on June 9, 2015. The 22-year-old has two quality starts in August and allowed only three earned runs (all solo homers) while fanning 11 in 12 innings this month. After Ball posted an 8.17 ERA over six starts in July, these August numbers are music to his and Boston's ears. It's been a bumpy development for the 2013 seventh overall pick, and based on his 3.83 ERA, 5.02 FIP and 5.3 BB/9 over 96 1/3 innings this season, he's still not there yet. But an impressive end to 2016 could go a long way toward putting the projectable southpaw back on track to realizing his once high potential."

I didn't check but assumed the comment earlier about Ball having a good outing was sarcasm, I'm happy to be wrong on that one.

Kopech is striking out ~14.0/9 and has a sub 1.00 ERA... I know his BB rate is still too high, but looking forward to seeing what he'll do in Portland next year when he can't just overpower everyone.

How about this year? There's still a few weeks left in the season for him to get a taste of AA
Regardless of results, Kopech has missed most of the last two seasons because of ... shall we say "immaturity"?

He should finish out the season in Salem to prove he can coexist with teammates and/or roommates and/or MLB's rulebook. Three AA starts is not worth the "maturity" this kid needs to exhibit in order to earn a promotion.

ETA: He'll get plenty of time in AA next year, if he can keep out of trouble between now and spring training.

From the sound of it, he needs to develop something beyond a fastball. I'd expect that's the plan for the off-season, then start in AA next year to see how it plays.

I would assume he'll (MK) go to the AFL, which is pretty high level competition, in order to get his innings up a bit more. So, no need to rush him to AA.

Wasn't aware Devers had 13sb in 17 attempts this year. Trey Ball also returned to pumpkin form. 5ip 5h 3r 5bb 2k. Joseph Monge also continues to look like a prospect to keep an eye on.

Small Sample size but Rusney continues to hit. 1/3 with 2bb today. Before tonight's game he was slashing .419/.432/.651 in August. 44 PA

The walks are a good sign. He had one last night too. He didn't walk a lot in Cuba, but he wasn't embarrassing in the category either. Maybe he's putting together a swing and approach that can make him successful enough to be a 4th outfielder at least.

If he could get even an acceptable grasp on the strike zone and pitch recognition, he'd be tremendous for a fourth OF role with his tools. A playable defender across all three OF positions, with speed and power that would make him interesting in PH/PR situations and playable for a week if someone's knocked up. Like a Cuban Gabe Kapler.

I've been thinking a lot about Castillo's future in light of Puig's declining performance. The stat translations that the FO must have been doing were based on just a dozen or so data points, and must have been inflated to some extent by Puig's good seasons, a high profile success that no longer looks as impressive as it once did.

Devers with a 4-6 night including an RBI double in the 9th when Salem was down 6-2 and a walk off double in the 11th. Now OPSing 1.028 in last 42 games and doesn't turn 20 until Oct 24th. Yoan who??? ;)
