Some news as we enter silly season...

- Yesterday was the deadline for teams to ask players with NMC's to waive for the expansion draft. Marc-Andre Fleury appears to be the only player that got asked and will waive. The Sens asked Phaneuf, and McKenzie is reporting that Phaneuf decided to not waive. Sens were attempting to protect Karlsson, Methot and Ceci, so they've got work to do.

- It doesn't appear like any other obvious candidates (Hartnell, Bieksa, Marc Staal, Girardi) were asked. McKenzie thinks Anaheim may have a deal in place with Vegas. Ditto CBJ. Supposedly the CBJ deal is Clarkson, 1st round pick and a prospect to Vegas.

- Lot's of bigger names in the rumor mill. Duchene and other Colorado guys, Vatanen, Minny D, Galchenyuk (lol), Evander Kane, Eberle, among others being bandied about. Could be a fun few weeks.

'18-'19: $3.611m
'19-'20: $3.611m
'20-'21 through '22-'23: $1.111m per year

I don't think they really had a choice.

Elsewhere, Bergevin appears ready to steer the ship into an iceberg again.

Read that yesterday. Darling just sounds like an awesome dude, from both that article and his PMT interviews. Always love the dynamic between backups and starters.

There's also a nonzero chance I played against him growing up. And now I'm posting on a message board from my bed.

Habs get Drouin and cond. 2018 6th for Sergachev + conditional 2018 2nd

Hell of a way to start the action.

I assume that's a "dump" so they can sign Johnson and Palat instead. Ryan Callahan at $5.8M for the next three years is...not good.

Pretty good return for Yzerman given the corner he was backed into... Sergachev has really high upside.

That being said, it's gonna suck facing Drouin

Not good from the B's point of view, 2 division rivals making a win-win deal with each other
That's true, but I don't hate Montreal losing Sergachev. We saw what McAvoy did and Sergachev has been hyped by some scouts/media too. Drouin is nice but has been a bit disappointing. Still, Montreal got him for a nice contract extension. 5.5/yr for ages 23-29 is nice even if he only puts up 60 pts per year.

Edit- link to Drouin's 6/33M extension.

The question was from a Leafs fan, so I assume the latter.

And as a quick request, Twitter is blocked at work so any text that could be posted would be greatly appreciated.

Mirtle is a Leafs guy, but he was referring to the league.

The current rumor mill:

- Lots of smoke around Minnesota. Seems they're likely to move Brodin or Dumba before the freeze tomorrow. I guess they really wanted Drouin.
- Sens trying to trade Phaneuf.
- Nashville could do something (Neal)

Those 3 are the main pre-expansion rumors that I've seen. The other names out there are Eberle, Duchene, Galchenyuk, Vatanen. Don't know if they'll go soon or after the expansion dust settles.

Sounds like Mike Smith was traded from Arizona to Calgary for Chad Johnson and something else, still working out the details.

To #Flames Mike Smith (25% retained) To #Coyotes Chad Johnson Brandon Hickey Cond. 3rd rd pick (2nd rd pick if Flames make playoffs)

Not really news but Shawn Thornton was on the latest episode of Spittin Chiclets and was great as usual. Him talking about fighting is enlightening. It's not just 2 guys throwing punches at each other. There's a lot of strategy behind it.

Also his stories about bringing the Ducks cup to Charlestown and seeing the B's cup at Sully's were hilarious. He obviously loved his time here and I wish he were still involved locally now that he's retired but I'm happy he seems to have found a great situation in Florida.

Yeah it was a good listen. He also confirmed NESN offered him a prime role on the Bruins coverage, but that Florida ownership really pushed hard to get him in the FO. Of note, he's a VP of business operations, so he's on the business side, which I found interesting.

I'd pay good money to have Thornton on the pre/post game set at nesn. And by pay good money I mean I'd actually watch. But it does seem like he has a good thing going down in FL so good on him.

(oops, I started the reply and left to go to a seminar and looks like Realness had it covered. I didn't realize nesn had made the push to get him. Good for them for trying at least I suppose.)

It is interesting but of any former player, he probably makes the most sense to be on the business side. For a 4th liner he was able to promote himself and make himself very popular in Boston. He took over a lot of the charity stuff when he came in and he's extremely personable so probably great at BS-ing with sponsors.

I would have loved to have seen him on NESN though

Elliotte Friedman says Marian Hossa may have to retire because he's allergic to hockey equipment and the medicine he has to take causes complications.

If so Chicago would have to LTIR (Pronger/Savard/etc) him every year til his contract runs out or face serious cap recapture penalties.
According to several sources, there is a legitimate possibility Hossa has played his final NHL game. (He could not be reached for comment. Neither could his agent, Ritch Winter. The Blackhawks declined to comment.) Apparently, he suffers from a serious allergic reaction to the equipment he wears.

The sources who confirmed the allergy stressed not to make fun of it, with one saying, “It’s only funny to anyone who’s never had it.” Details are sketchy, because no one would give full information, but the medication necessary to combat the allergy is potent enough that doctors wanted his blood tested every few weeks to make sure there were no major side effects.

That’s very serious stuff, and word is doctors worried about Hossa taking the medicine for extended periods of time.

Hossa is one of my favorite players in the league and I hope he is OK and everything, but this seems awfully convienient for all involved. Hawks in a major cap crunch, Marian entering the back diving years of his contract and has already been paid 94% of the money owed to him. Timing seems curious.

I bet he ends up in the desert with Datsyuk and Pronger.

Did he just become allergic to his equipment and can't he find equipment he isn't allergic to? Seems very odd that someone that has played hockey for what 30+ yrs is suddenly deathly allergic to his equipment.

edit: And Hossa just confirmed he is sitting out 17/18 season. Very odd situation, hopefully he can get better. He was still productive for his salary last season so this doesn't really help CHI for at least next season. In fact CHI had to waste a protected spot on Hossa.

I can't find the link, but apparently it's a skin condition where he is allergic to his own sweat. The equipment just exasperates the problem.

That was going to be my guess and makes a lot more sense.

Thanks

I'm wondering if the Blackhawks and the league had discussed this already.

Hossa had to be protected due to a NMC, but the Blackhawks putting him on LTIR to get cap relief and open up a protection slot probably would have been a bit too much for the other teams.

For Chicago, it's not about protecting players as much as it is shedding salary - namely Kruger. If this happened a month ago, they still couldn't protect TVR, and he is seemingly the price to get Vegas to take Kruger.

Good point. Even thinking about Chicago's ability to take on another player via trade who could then be protected, I don't believe they can LTIR Hossa until the start of the season anyway.

How were Datsuyk and Pronger handled by the expansion draft. Were they not eligible because of games not played?

Edit: answered my question on Pronger: he was exempt (as were a few others including Nathan Horton). https://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/2017/5/2/15524880/expansion-draft-the-first-exemption-list-is-revealed-nathan-horton-ltir-nhl-bruins-vegas-knights.

Still no idea about Datsuyk though

Second Edit: The exempt list makes sense. Everyone played little or not at all in the 16-17 season and have an overwhelming likelihood of only having use to hit the floor.

Strome wasn't even protected...

I mean, I get it with moving Eberle's $6m AAV off the books, but yeesh - dump Pouliot at $4m instead maybe?

I think Chiarelli's done a piss poor job with the Oilers. It's like a test to see how much McDavid can cover up.

A couple of Vegas trades...

Trevor van Riemsdyk and a 7th to Carolina for a 2nd

David Schlemko to Montreal for a 5th

Fuck, solid pickup for Montreal at that price

Considering Brenden Dillon wasn't protected, why would McPhee select and flip Schlemko? Surely, Dillon is worth more than a 5th rounder...
